But what about those times when you are sick If you do not feel well, should you keep following your exercise habit Following are the answers from health experts.
Edward R.Laskowski is a doctor at the Mayo Clinic. He and other experts have a general rule about exercising when you are sick.It is usually fine to exercise properly(not hard),he explains,if your symptoms are all “above the neck”.These signs may include a runny nose, sneezing or a sore throat.
Geralyn Coopersmith,a physical fitness trainer who has written several books on exercise, offers similar advice. However, both Coopersmith and Dr Laskowski suggest taking a break from exercising if signs of your illness appear “below the neck”.Pay special attention to symptoms such as chest congestion, bad cough or pain in the stomach.
There are other symptoms that can tell you to avoid exercise. They include a higher than normal body temperature,a sense of feeling very tired, and widespread muscle pain.
Both Coopersmith and Dr Laskowski suggest listening to your body.If you feel really bad, take a break and let your body rest.If you don’t feel too bad, these experts both suggest cutting down the amount of exercise. For example,if you usually run, take a quick walk instead.

Doctors have a new weapon in the battle against obesity(过度肥胖)—a talking plate that tells people not to eat too quickly. The Mandometer monitors the amount of food left on the plate, and tells users,“Please eat more slowly.”
The£1,500 Swedish device is to be used in a National Health Service plan to help hundreds of obese families lose weight. It comes in two parts—a scale placed under the plate and a small computer screen showing a graphic(图表) of the food gradually disappearing as the user eats.A red line on the screen shows the user’s eating speed, while a blue line shows a healthy rate.If the user eats too fast, the red line angles away from the blue one, warning him or her to ease off.If the lines deviate(偏离) too much, the computer voice comes on,and the screen flashes the message “Are you feeling full yet?” to remind users to think about whether they have had enough.
Britain has an increasingly serious obesity problem, with one in four adults and one in seven children classed as obese. After a recent trial using the device, experts believe teaching obese people to eat more slowly will help them know when they are full.Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child (aged five or older) were targeted in the project by Bristol University, along with GPs and nurses.
Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield,who is leading the plan, says obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 percent less per meal at the end of the 12-month trial.Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less, and continued to lose weight.“It will be a powerful tool to help families retrain their eating habits,” he says.

B.One in seven adults is obese in Britain.
C.Children using the Mandometer ate less after the trial.

Playing tennis regularly could help keep people off death, but football, rugby and running may not help people to live longer,a study suggests.
A study followed more than 80,000 people for an average of nine years to find out if certain sports protected them against early death. It found that people who played racket sports regularly were the least likely to die over the study period, reducing their individual risk by 47 percent compared with people who did no exercise.Swimmers also reduced their chance of death by 28 percent, aerobics(有氧运动) fans by 27 percent and cyclists by 15 percent.Yet running appeared to have no impact at all on dying early, and neither did playing football or rugby.
Scientists say the difference may lie in the social aspect which goes alongside sports like tennis and squash(壁球),which often involve clubs and organized activities outside of the game.It means that people often have larger social networks and tend to keep up activities into later life, both of which are proven to be good for health.
In contrast, people who play team sports often do not move onto a new sport once their teams break up for family or injury reasons. They become watchers rather than participants in their chosen activity.
The researchers found that playing racket sports was associated with a 56 percent lower risk from heart death.Similarly, swimmers lowered their heart disease or stroke risk by 41 percent, and people who took part in activities like aerobics, dance or gymnastics lowered their risk by 36 percent. But again running, football and rugby had no significant impact on heart deaths.
However, other experts argue that this study must not be misinterpreted as showing that running and football do not protect against heart disease. In this study both runners and footballers had a lower rate of death from heart disease.

Plastic surgery has many negative effects on teenagers.Firstly, caring about appearance too much will affect their studies. As a result, they can’t concentrate on their lessons.Secondly, teenagers are still growing and such surgery is likely to harm their health. Some teenagers had plastic surgery, which stopped them from returning to a normal life. Therefore, they regret having the surgery.
In a word,a teenager should keep away from plastic surgery, and use knowledge to build self-confidence.

Youth is a stressful time from friends to school to families, and stressful situations become common. The body can respond with faster breathing,a fast beating heart, tense muscles and drop of sweat. And teens who breathe polluted air appear to respond most strongly to stress,a new study shows.
Jonas Miller,a psychologist working at Stanford University, studied whether or how air pollution might affect the body’s response to stress.Miller’s team invited 144 teens to participate in a stressful test. Most of the kids lived in or near San Francisco, which has the worst air quality.
Before the test, the researchers used sensors to record heart rates and sweat levels for five minutes as the kids rested. Then as the test began,a researcher read aloud the beginning of a story and the kids had five minutes to make up an exciting ending to the story. They would have to memorize their ending and present it aloud to a judge. After finishing this task, the kids were asked to do math problems, which obviously was a harder task.If he or she made a mistake, the judge let the student start over. The whole time, sensors recorded heart rates and sweat levels.
Miller found all the students had similar heart rates and sweat levels at rest. But as the test got difficult, differences began to appear.Kids from places with more air pollution responded more strongly to stress and their heartbeats became irregular. They sweated more than teens who lived in cleaner places.
“The teens’ bodies were preparing to deal with possible challenges in the environment and such bodily responses to stress were linked to negative feelings,” Miller concludes.“Over time,” he says,“these responses can contribute to both physical and mental health problems.”
This study has proved the negative heath effects of air pollution among teenagers. Therefore, teenagers should try to avoid their exposure to air pollution. They should consider limiting their time outside during rush hour, especially on days when air pollution is particularly strong.

Ⅱ.七选五
The desire to be noticed by peers(同龄人) is a natural tendency.Your style—the way you dress up,the way you carry yourself, the trends you follow—plays a key role in helping you stand out from the others. 1 The following tips can help you.
Be yourself.
Why be a second-rate version of anybody else when you can be the first-rate version of yourself?Nothing will help you stand out of the crowd more than your own features because there can be only one you.Everyone has their own belief, their own way of thinking, their own experiences that shape their styles.However,self-doubt and fear of disapproval drive many to abandon their own ways and follow what everyone else is doing. 2
Keep an open mind.
Open-mindedness helps you see things from a different perspective, understand others, find opportunities, and learn from others. 3 There are several styles that you should explore and determine which suits your own personality.Nobody knows what fashion you are enthusiastic about. But you should be clearly aware of your own true feelings about it.
Keep up with the recent trends.
Fashion is always changing. 4 As society changes,so does fashion.Changing trends reflect the changes in people’s taste.Similarly, your sense of fashion changes as you gain more experiences in life.Keeping track of the latest fashion will help you redefine your style.
Wear your confidence.
Your attitude towards dressing can make a significant difference to how you look. You can wear a very beautiful dress, but if you can’t carry it with confidence,it will not look good on you. 5 Don’t wear an uncomfortable dress just because everyone or your friend is wearing it.Remember,it’s okay to have your own style as long as you are confident with it.
A.Also,it tells a lot about your personality.
B.What worked yesterday may not work today.
C.Copying others will make you just another face in a crowd.
D.Having an open mind can be very helpful in defining your style.
E.On the other hand, even an average dress looks great on people who wear it confidently.
F.It is not absolutely necessary to follow every new trend, and you can enjoy the ones you like.
G.Simply following the fashion trends or wearing expensive clothes will not help you get a distinct style.
1.答案 G
解析 根据上文“Your style—the way you dress up,the way you carry yourself, the trends you follow—plays a key role in helping you stand out from the others.”以及下文给出的建议可知,G项“紧跟时尚潮流或穿昂贵的衣服,并不能帮你获得一种独特的风格”承上启下,符合语境,故选G。

3.答案 D
解析 根据上文“Open-mindedness helps you see things from a different perspective, understand others, find opportunities, and learn from others.”并结合本段主题“Keep an open mind.”可知,保持开放的心态对定义你的风格很有帮助,故选D。

Organic food(有机食品) is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as non-organic food. Some parents and pet owners pay up to 200 percent more for organic food while some people think organic food is a waste of money.
There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food.Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides(杀虫剂).This makes sure that the products are natural.
Some people think “organic” means “locally grown”.At the beginning, this was true.Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply.Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren’t enough organic materials. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business.Today, many large companies have an organic line of products.
Is organic food more nutritious(有营养的) This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers(消费者) believe it is.They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems, such as cancer. Many health experts disagree.Few studies prove that organic food prevents health problems.Health experts worry more about bacteria(细菌).These can come into contact with organic and non-organic food.Doctors recommend washing produce very carefully.
Most people agree that naturally grown food tastes better. Is tastier food worth the extra money This is a matter of opinion.Whether it is healthier or not may require more research. However, organic consumers argue it is better to be safe than sorry.

Our story begins at the John Burroughs Elementary School in Washington,D.C.The school’s kindergarten students are staying late today—an hour after classes normally end.The boys and girls are not seeking help with reading skills or mathematics.Instead, they are tasting kale,a vegetable that many of them are eating for the first time.
The school’s teacher Dionne Hammiel says her students have learned healthy eating habits from the program. She hopes they will keep a healthy diet for the rest of their lives.
The program is taught by young people like Karen Davison. She is a member of FoodCorps. The non-profit group gets money from the AmeriCorps National Service Program.Since the beginning of the school year,Ms Davison has spent each day in this Washington,D.C.classroom.She gives the kindergartners vegetables that many of them have never tasted. She teaches them where their food comes from and how they can choose to eat healthier meals.
FoodCorps was set up five years ago.It sends more than 180 young Americans to 500 schools across the United States. The young people teach students about nutrition and how they can eat healthy food both at school and at home.FoodCorps also works with other groups to plant vegetable gardens in schools and bring healthier food to stores—especially stores in cities. Many small urban stores often sell only packaged food.

When we talk about positive thinking,we often use terms having to do with our hearts—open heart, pure heart or joyful heart. But new research from Duke University is making a closer connection, finding that a positive attitude may be helpful to people who have angina(心绞痛),a common heart condition.
Symptoms of this condition include chest pain or pressure because the heart is not receiving sufficient oxygen.Patients who displayed optimistic thought patterns, including having positive expectations about recovery, were 40 percent less likely to be hospitalized or require surgery than those who were not optimistic, according to the study. The researchers collected data from 2,400 patients who had diagnoses of angina.
An interesting additional finding from the patients’ questionnaires was that the most optimistic patients were also the least likely to have histories of heart attack, heart failure or heart disease.
The researchers did not declare a causal relationship between positive thinking and better heart disease outcomes, however. There are multiple possible reasons for the results of the study, including the idea that patients who are healthier to begin with are more likely to expect to recover and regain good health.
But the study does represent a new way of looking at the situation. Now,in addition to a body of research that examines the relationship between depression and heart health, there is a new way of inquiry that asks whether positive thinking could be used as a strategy to improve outcomes.
Lead researcher Alexander Fanaroff,a fellow in the department of cardiology(心脏病学) at the Duke University Medical Center, told the Duke Chronicle that his next research question will find ways to improve attitudes among heart patients.
Perhaps his subjects could reflect on the word of the writer Anthony J.D’Angelo:“Smile,it is the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart.”
4.How can people with angina get better according to the study
A.By expecting more.
B.By thinking positively.
C.By getting timely surgery.

B.People’s attitudes decide their overall health.
C.How positive thinking benefits heart health is unclear.
D.The reason why patients recover well is that they have no depression.

6.What may be Alexander Fanaroff’s next research
A.To explore how to improve patients’ attitudes.
B.To find out the ways to treat heart patients.

Lloyd Black decided to join the Anytime Fitness gym in Semmes,Alabama last year after he found himself struggling to accomplish simple household tasks. The 91-year-old man hoped that joining a gym might help him build strength and reduce his aches and pains.Over the past year,Black has been faithfully coming to the gym three times a week. His overalls(工装裤) really catch plenty of attention. He says that he prefers to wear overalls during his workouts because they are comfortable, and he has trouble “keeping his trousers up” otherwise.
