People have been trying to predict earthquakes for over a thousand years. But can earthquakes be predicted Many scientists would probably answer. “Not yet.”
Earthquakes give very little warning before they hit. Around 500,000 detectable(可察觉的)quakes occur in the world each year. Of those. 100,000 can be felt by humans, and 100 cause injuries(受伤)and deaths. Scientists have no way of knowing exactly when or where the next one will hit.
Can animals be used to predict earthquakes As early as 2,000 years ago. Greek writers wrote that animals, including rats and snakes, left a Greek city before a quake destroyed the place. It has been reported that before earthquakes fish move wildly, chickens stop laying eggs and bees leave their homes and dogs dark for no reason.
In the 1970s, American scientists did several studies on animal prediction, but nothing came out of it. They believe there is no connection between animal behavior and quakes. Animals react to so many things -- being hungry, defending their territories(领地) --- so it’s hard to get that advanced warning signal.
Anyway, as long as earthquakes remain destructive, we will dream of being able to predict the next “big one” before it this.
