To us,it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a sunshade(遮阳伞).
Nobody knows who first invented it,but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the Chinese were the first to use it,back in the 11th century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing that connected with its use:it was a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in the upper class or by royal people such as kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it became a symbol of power.

Sara Du, a 16-year-old Chinese-American girl, started writing computer programs two years ago after reading new articles about kids who created smartphone apps.
She then bought an 828-page book about creating apps and spent an hour or two every day learning to program. “It wasn’t difficult, because it was fun,” Du said. “It was different from what I learned at school.”
In January, Du was honored at a tech trade show (技术贸易展) in the United States for developing Bluejay, a smartphone app that helps to find missing people. Rescuers (救援者) can fly a driverless (无人驾驶) plane that can collect information, such as GPS, of those missing persons. That’s because the smartphone of a missing person can send signals to a chip (芯片) on the driverless plane through Bluetooth.
Du came up with the idea for Bluejay based on her own experience in 2015, when she had to wait alone in a quiet park in the evening because she couldn’t get a wireless signal (无线信号). She stayed in the dark park, worrying about wild animals. It took more than two hours until her father showed up. “I was thinking, ‘After I get out, I’m going to solve this problem,’” Du said. She then started the project and worked on it nearly every day for the next two months.

54.Dear Editor,
I am writing to tell you about the survey I've made on “Using paper cards or e cards ” in our class.
About 30% of the students want to use paper cards. First of all, they think paper cards are made by hand and they can express people's feelings. Second, paper cards are easy to take and can be kept for long. Third, people can read them without computers.
However, around 70% of the students prefer to use e cards. For one thing, e cards can carry lots of information and people can send them quickly. For another thing, using e cards can save paper so that our environment can be protected well. What's more, people can make various designs they like.
In my opinion, we should try our best to use e cards. They can not only pass our love quickly and conveniently but also protect our earth.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Qiang
