It was such a nice day and it’s Sunday. I left for the park with my skateboard. There were so many kids in the central square. The parents chatted merrily in small groups, occasionally taking a glance at their kids. I skated for about half an hour and took a break on the nearby bench. Early summer morning was always the best time, the bird chirping in the trees and cool winds blowing in my face. How could I miss it Dad said he was going to mow the lawn in the yard on the weekend and asked whether I could help. I made an excuse and just ran away.
I took a look around the park before I stood up and spotted an old man on the far side of the park. He kept bending forward and threw something into a plastic bag with him I watched for a while and realized what he was doing. He was picking up the litter. At first, I thought he might be a cleaner working in the park but I had never seen him before. “Who is he It’s Sunday and he is not here for fun ” I talked to myself. I went on skating and forgot about him.
Time went fast and the sun was already high up in the sky. It was getting hot and I was tired. I was ready to go when I saw the old man again. The park was hall empty. He was still there, collecting the rubbish left on the benches with much elfort. Time and time again, he stopped to straighten his body but he showed no sign of leaving soon. Clearly, it was hard work for people of his a age.
“Not to leave What if he has no water left in such hot weather ” I wondered.
With some hesitation, I walked toward him.

Emily finished playing the music, and then bowed to the animal toys on her bed. “There, three times in a row with no mistakes,” she said, “I just hope I can play it that well at the concert.” In just an hour she would be playing her first solo, and the thought was giving her butterflies.
“You’re lucky you don’t have to play by yourself in front of everybody,” she said, smoothing Lea the Tiger’s fur, and gazed down at the smiling face of Zoey the Zebra. Emily scolded, “You’re a big help. How can you be so happy at a time like this ”
She looked around the room at the bear, lion, monkey, and other animal toys that lined her bed and shelves. “I wish you could all come with me,” she sighed. She gave them one last glance and went to join her parents in the car.
“Do I have to play in the concert ” asked Emily as she climbed into the back seat. “Is my favorite first-grader getting nervous ” her dad asked, smiling. Emily didn’t answer. She was trying to picture what it would be like to play in front of all those people. “You’ll do fine, honey.” He added. “The first time is always the hardest.”
When they arrived at the concert hall, Emily handed her violin to her teacher, Mrs Allen, for tuning and tiptoed over to where the curtains parted. Looking out, she could see that all the seats were filled, with many more people standing in back.
Nervously she took her violin and sat with the other students onstage. She held her breath as the curtains started to open and Mrs Allen picked up the microphone to begin the program. One by one the students played their pieces. Finally, Emily heard her name announced. Her heart pounded as she walked toward the front of the stage.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy ” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day ” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

When I was in high school, I had a dream: to appear in a television program. I was too shy to share my dream with my teacher, however, or anyone else—except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.
People often told me I could be a nurse, a teacher, or a hairdresser, which I thought were all great careers. But that was not what I wanted. Thankfully, my parents had raised me and my siblings to have lots of confidence. Both my parents, especially my dad, often said, “You can do anything you want to.”
With his encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I was admitted. I really loved the program and worked hard —and I was named the most outstanding graduate of the year. Just by getting into Ryerson and graduating at the top of the class, I began to think that maybe my dream could come true.
After I graduated, I applied to the CBC and CTV for a job. They both said the same thing: “We love your education, but you don’t have any e back when you get some!” And I kept saying, “How can I get this experience I’ve been busy getting an education.” They both turned me down.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, “I’m new and they’re new. Why not give it a try ” I didn’t know anyone there, so if I was going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him directly. What could I lose I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good! That’s exactly what you should do.”

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell , panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barking. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉) Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

参考答案
1. With some hesitation, I walked toward him. “Would you please tell me why you pick up garbage on Sunday ” I asked. The old man told me that there was too much garbage in the park, making the park look terrible. He just did what he could to make the park tidy. I handed the old man a bottle of water and picked up garbage with him, after which I went home hurriedly. Seeing my father mowing the lawn, I went to help him. Looking at the tidy lawn, I felt very tired but happy.

To her surprise, it looked as if all the people in the hall had changed into her doll animals, and she even saw her smiling Zoey the Zebra standing at the back. It was almost like being at home with her lovely friends. More relaxed, she picked up her confidence and remembered her piece.
As she played, the “animals” audience seemed to be changing back into people. But Emily was no longer nervous because all the audience looked friendly now. She also found her parents’ smiling eyes focused on her, telling her “you’re always the best”. The audience lost themselves in her music. Finally, she played the last note, put her violin under her arm and took a big bow. The music lingered in the air after the performance, while the entire audience broke into loud applause. She made it! She had played her first solo!

A week later, my big day for the stage came. I was about to get on the stage when negative thoughts flooded into my mind. “What if the audience don’t like me ” Then with my father’s words echoing in my mind, I replaced the negative thoughts with positive ones. “This is going to be the best show ever. Then, my father carried me on his back, down the mountain and to the nearest clinic, where a doctor was waiting for us.
Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help. He quickly ran home and waited until my parents came home from work. He barked loudly at my parents.
