Tips for Living in China
1. Dinners When you are invited to a dinner party, you don’t have to eat everything. First, try a little of every dish by putting some on your plate or rice bowl. You don’t have to eat it, but as a foreign guest, you're supposed to be served first. If you don't try something, your host will be embarrassed-and will put it on your plate for you.
2. Bargaining When you go to open air markets or private stores, you need to bargain with the shop-assistant. Remember to start a friendly relationship first. You are creating a relationship with the businessman, not a price war. Think of it this way: Shouting, arguing, and pointing are not good. Smiling, being friendly offering to buy more for a better price are. And don’t be afraid to ask, "Can you offer me a better price "
3.Chopsticks Don't point with them at other people's faces, and by all means don't stick them upright in your rice bowl-that's how the Chinese honor the dead at graves(坟墓). You should put them beside the plate.
4.Smiling Chinese smile for more reasons than Americans. A smile can mean the person is embarrassed(尴尬的)trying to be helpful, happy or friendly. People in the east use chopsticks, or sometimes even take food with hand as Indians do. The thin and long chopsticks cannot be used to cut food, so we usually use our teeth to act as knives. We hold our food, meat or vegetable with the chopsticks, send them to the mouths, bite off a part of it and remain the other part on the chopsticks. That's the usual way we eat. We are also used to hold up our bowls when having rice or soup. In the West, when eating bowls and plates cannot leave the tables. Food should be cut by knives to fit into the mouths. Of course your mouth cannot touch the plates or bowls.
