The choices were microwave ovens(微波炉)mobile phones, personal computers, cars and toothbrushes. Believe it or not, the toothbrush was also among the five things. Almost half of the adults and one-third of the teens said they could not live without a toothbrush. If you can help think about ways to clean people's teeth before toothbrushes were invented, you might want to live without your toothbrush. How about brushing your teeth with a corncob(玉米棒)and salt
We should thank William Addis for the first mass-produced toothbrushes. He began to sell these around the year 1780 in England. Soon he became a rich man.
After 150 years, Americans really formed the brushing habit, too. In World War II, American soldiers had been taught to brush their teeth every day. They took the habit home with them. The act of mind reading is usually seen in science-fiction movies, but researchers in America have us a way, for the first time to show that a computer can listen to our thoughts.
In a new study, scientists from Washington University showed that humans can control a cursor(光标)on a computer screen using words spoken out loud or thoughts in their head. The study used four patients. Each patient was given an operation(手术)an electrode(电极)with a program in it placed onto the brain of the patient. Then the patient's brain was joined to the computer. The patients sat in front of a screen and saw the screen, tried to move a cursor toward a goal using predefined(预先设定的)
words. For example, saying or thinking of the word "AH" would move the cursor right.
During the tests, the electrodes placed on the patient's brain would send out signals which could be stored on a computer. The result was exciting;the computer could be controlled with up to 90% accuracy.
Dr. Eric C Leuthardt, the lead author, of Washington University School of Medicine, said, "This is one of the earliest examples, just the beginning of reading minds. We want to know not only what word you're saying but also learn what the real ideas look like in your mind. Some students now have a new use of the Internet-use mobile hones to find out the answers to their homework. But different people have different ideas about it.
Some students say that they have so much homework every day that they don't have enough time. And some of the problems are too hard for them to work out. So they have to use mobile phones to find out the answers.
However, I think copying the answers can't improve the students abilities, but may make them stop thinking. In my opinion, we can make proper use of the Internet but cant depend on it. Studying online can be a way to help, but the best way is studying by oneself.
