Dear Victor,
I have received your letter from school. I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible enough to make decisions about your career (职业).
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You asked me to give you some advice. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot about the field you are interested in. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more important than another. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. You have good communication skills. You are always active in school plays and you've won many prizes in speech competitions. All these lead you to that direction. So a career in mass communication or TV and film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
You are old enough to think for yourself. Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
Best wishes!
Your loving father

Dogs Trust is taking to the streets trying to stop thousands of puppies (小狗) being bought without enough consideration this Christmas, only to be cruelly abandoned soon after. Twelve artworks have been designed to describe the shocking reasons given to Dogs Trust, across its 20 Rehoming Centres in the UK, by owners who no longer wish to care for their dogs. Every day Dogs Trust takes in dogs of all shapes and sizes, often accompanied (陪伴) by unbelievable reasons why their owners are giving them up. The main reason given by owners is that the dogs need more attention than they can give. Other reasons include:
“He kept running after frogs.”
“He looked different after we walked him in the rain.”
“I’m worried our baby will copy him.”
“My dog is old and going to die soon.”
“He was afraid of the cat next door.”
“He barks every morning.”
“She seemed hungry all the time and followed me around the house.”
“He kept coughing in the night and woke me up.”
“All the puppy did was sleep. We wanted a dog we could play with.”
Sadly, the huge increase in online pet selling has led to many dealers (经销商) turning to the Internet to advertise their puppies. Giles Webber, Operations Director says, “With more and more puppies flooding the Christmas market, all is available at the click of a button — it is more necessary than ever that our message ‘A Dog is For Life, Not Just For Christmas’ is planted in people’s minds.”
“We hope that this activity will encourage people to think twice before buying a puppy. Our aim is to make sure that the artwork will be the only abandoned dogs the British public will see on their streets this Christmas period.” Webber added.

Humoody was born in Iraq. When he was two years old, his face was badly hurt and he couldn’t see any more. He came to the United States to get medical care and now lives with an American family in Washington State.
Humoody quickly learned to use a cane (手杖) to get around. He also started clicking (使发出咔哒声), sensing objects by listening for echoes (回声). To help Humoody develop this skill, his family found him an echolocation teacher, Juan Ruiz. Ruiz is also blind and he has been echolocating for many years. Even someone who’s not blind can try it, he says. Stand facing a wall a couple of feet away. Make some noise by clicking or talking out loud. Listen carefully. Now walk a little closer to the wall and keep making your noise. Can you hear how it changes as the wall gets nearer
Experiment with how your voice or clicks sound in different parts of your home. “Every room has a different sound to it,” Ruiz says.
How does the sound of a kitchen or bathroom compare to the sound of a carpeted (铺有地毯的) room What about a long hallway The differences you hear are the same kinds of clues (线索) that blind people listen to. With lots of practice, their brains have learned to get information from these clues.
Humoody doesn’t give up though he is blind. Learning how to echolocate is helping him get around more easily and safely, especially in places where he can’t take his cane, like the football field.

May 15th is Teachers’ Day in South Korea. But teachers are nervous on that day. Some teachers send letters to parents to ask them not to send any gifts on that day. Many schools even have a day off on that day without any celebrations.
According to the CBS News on May 16th, in South Korea, sending teachers gifts has a long history. But in the past, some teachers accepted too many bribes (贿赂). So the government made a decision in 2008 that teachers who accept bribes will be asked to leave school and they won’t have the right to teach again. Sometimes there are investigators (调查者) checking the teachers’ bags or their cars to see if there are gifts.
It is reported that in order not to be misunderstood, teachers are terrified to get any gift, even a flower. In the capital of South Korea, fourteen primary schools and ten high schools had a day off on Teachers’ Day in 2010.
Teachers should be happy on their own holiday. But things have changed. Maybe the government should try to come up with ideas to hold some celebrations on May 15th.

An adventure (冒险) race is a mix of different sports in one long race. Each team in the race has two to five competitors, and all must finish together.
These notes are about an international four-day adventure race. There were 68 men and women from many countries in 17 teams, and the race was in China. One of the women called Julie wrote these notes every evening:
Day 1
30 km on bicycles and on foot. Each team had only two bicycles. So the fastest runners did most of the running. Then 10 km on long skates (滑板) with wide wheels. Finally, across a lake in a kayak (皮划艇) (10 km).
Day 2
We ran up and down a mountain, through a beautiful forest and two villages (20 km). 25 km down a river in a kayak. Then a 15-km run through rice fields. My feet are hurting now.
Day 3
30 km on bicycles across a river and up a mountain. The stronger riders pulled the weaker riders with ropes. Water and food at the top, then a 20-km run down. I'm almost dead!
Day 4

“I do, too!”Dave added.
No one else spoke.
“You two can give speeches tomorrow,” Mrs Hamid said.
On the bus, Brenda sat next to her best friend, Laura. Everyone was talking about the election (选举). Naturally, all the girls wanted to vote (投票) for Brenda. Brenda was very popular. Dave was a new boy. No one really knew him. Only a few of the boys wanted to vote for him, and that was just because he was a boy. The other boys didn't care about the election at all.

When I was twenty years old, my grandmother invited me to Europe. I had never been to foreign countries before, so I was very excited. When I told my professor about the trip, he suggested, “Keep a journal (日记).”More than ten years later, I am so thankful for his suggestion, as I can look back on this first trip to Europe through my journal.
Keeping a travel journal is very simple. During your vacation, write down the things that interest you. They may not be the tourist attractions but some small things, such as a meal and a talk.
Choose a good journal book that you like. The size of your book is also important. It should feel good in your hand. Some people feel that a travel journal book should be small and easy to carry, while others prefer a large-sized one. My journal has always been about 8*11 inches. I haven’t found any real problems with carrying it. It fits well into a backpack. You’d better get your journal with a waterproof (防水的) cover.
You can write with different kinds of pens or pencils to make your journal look beautiful. Even if you are not good at drawing, a journal can make you more creative. You will find yourself quickly drawing things or writing poems in your journal. Bring back some pictures and postcards so that you can put them in your journal. You can cut them into the shapes you like so that you can make your journal look more beautiful.
Tourist maps are also a wonderful thing to add to your journal because they show where you have been.
There are so many things you can write in your journal, such as the beautiful sights, a person you have seen in a museum, a cafe that has caught your attention and your feelings about your trip. All these small details do make up your trip.

D. the journal reminds him of the happy time in Europe.
( )42.“Keep a travel journal”means ______.

A student asked his teacher,“What is Greed (贪婪) ”The teacher said,“To find the answer to your question, go to the chocolate factory next to our school and pick the one chocolate you like best. But there is a rule. As you pass through the factory, you cannot turn back. You must pick the chocolate as you go forward only.”
The student went to the chocolate factory. As he walked through, he saw one chocolate wrapped (包装) nicely. He really liked it but he thought that he might find a much bigger one later. So, he walked further and saw another chocolate. But again, he thought the same and took nothing. When he reached near the end of the factory, he couldn't see any chocolates as big as the one he didn't pick earlier and started to regret his decision of letting it go.
Finally, he gave up. He went back to the teacher with empty hands and explained what he had done.
The teacher told him,“You liked one chocolate very much but you still kept looking for a bigger one. And later you realized what you missed was the best chocolate you could find there. That is called Greed.”
In our life we let go of many good things because of our greed of having even better ones. This is human nature: we always want something better and better. But we let go of many good things which can give us similar satisfaction and make us happy. Learn to make your choice wisely.

Dear principal,
I am writing to recommend Jenny as the next chairperson of the Students’Union. I think she will be an excellent chairperson because she has many good personal qualities.
Jenny is hard-working and does well in all his subjects, and has gone far beyond her classmates in study, but she never shows off. And she is practical and doesn’t mind doing extra work. Also, she is creative and often comes up with valuable advice. Every day, she hands in her homework on time, and often helps her classmates with their schoolwork, so she is helpful. And she often encourages us to work hard and tells us not to give up easily. What’s more, she always works as a good team leader. For example, she often helps to organize some activities, and keeps everything in order. She is even brave enough to make speeches in front of many students.
I think Jenny has all the qualities to be a good chairperson. I hope you will agree with me!
Yours sincerely,
Tom
