阅读下列短文,从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Do you want to create an eye-pleasing design through the colours Let’s learn about the colour wheel first.
There are three primary colours in the wheel: red, blue and yellow. These colours cannot be created from the other colours on the wheel, but all the other colours can be created from the mixed of these three.
The secondary colours are formed by mixing two primary colours. For example, red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green, and blue and red make violet. Now we are beginning to make “designer” colours!
The tertiary colours (第三色) are formed by mixing primary colours with the secondary colour next to them. The tertiary colours include: red-violet and blue-violet, red-orange and yellow-orange, or yellow-green and blue-green. These colours are versatile (万能的) and just a few of your decorating friends. Do you have a favourite
Analogous colours (类似色) are next to each other on the colour wheel. These colours will have a common base colour. For example: blue, blue-violet, and violet. Another example is yellow-green, green, and blue-green.
Complementary colours (互补色) are opposite colours on the wheel. These colours balance each other and create a harmonious look and feel. An example is yellow and violet. Look at their location on the wheel.
Colour temperature is the feeling of the warmth or coolness of the colour. The blue-based colours are cool colours while the red and orange families are warm colours. Knowing the secrets of the colours can help you make a different design.

My game system was broken and couldn't be repaired, and I didn't have enough money to buy a new one. The only solution I could think of was to earn some extra money. I tried to come up with some good ideas for a job — that was what my brother Cody had suggested. One morning, I was looking out my window wondering what kind of job I could get, when something I noticed gave me an inspiration (灵感).
My neighbour, Mr Drummond, was wheeling his rubbish barrel (桶) out to the curb (路缘). Mr Drummond was elderly, and I could tell he was struggling to move his rubbish barrel. I ran outside, rushed across the street, and offered to move his rubbish to the curb. He was very grateful. After he thanked me, I decided to discuss my inspiration with him. “I'm trying to earn some extra money,” I explained, “and I'm just wondering whether people would be interested in having me do chores (家庭杂务).”
“Well, I certainly would, Justin,” Mr Drummond answered. “There are several things that are more difficult for me because I'm getting on in years, and it'd be helpful to have a young person around to do those jobs. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other people of my age in the same situation.”
I decided to take Mr Drummond's suggestion about helping elderly people, and I visited some of my other neighbours. It turned out that Mr Drummond was right. A lot of them were interested in having someone come around to do chores. I made up a schedule (时间表) of people to visit and chores they wanted me to do, and started working. At first, it was tiring, but before long, I got used to it. Within a month, I'd earned enough money to get my new game system, and that made me very happy.
( )35. According to Paragraph 1, Cody suggested the writer should _____.
A. buy a new game system
B. stop playing video games
C. repair his broken game system

A. His parents. B. His brother.
C. One of his classmates. D. One of his neighbours.
( )37. Elderly people were willing to have the writer do chores because _____.
A. they lived alone and felt lonely
B. they wanted to help him earn money
C. they found some things difficult to do
D. they didn't want to take the trouble to do chores
( )38. It can be inferred from the text that _____.
A. the writer wasn't used to doing chores at first
B. Mr Drummond was interested in playing video games
C. the writer's parents never gave him pocket money
D. the rubbish barrel was too heavy for the writer to move
[C]
Today, more and more students prefer to take a year off after high school. But I believe one should go to college right after graduating from high school because it is more advantageous to do so.
Attending college right after one graduates from high school makes sure he will be surrounded by people of his own age at school. He will be more comfortable in the college setting. Meeting new friends and forming life-long bonds (关系) with them is a big part of the college experience. By taking time off, one will enter a college when he is older than the rest of the freshmen (大学一年级新生).
Another reason is that one might not wish to return to school later. If one finds a job, he might end up staying in that job instead of going back to school and getting a college degree. Also, it becomes much harder to learn as one ages. The longer he stays out of school, the greater the risk that he will not go back to get his college degree will be.
Although some people argue taking one year off will allow one to find himself or better understand what he really wants in life, I believe college is the perfect time to do that. College allows one to take part in many different clubs, volunteer organizations, and trips that will help him figure out what he really wants to do in his life. The people he meets in college will help shape him into the person he will be for the rest of his life.
In conclusion, going to college upon graduation from high school is the best choice. College is an amazing experience that will shape one’s mind and drive him to achieve great success at whatever it is that he wants to do. It should be experienced as soon as possible.
( )39. For students, studying with people of their own age is _____.
A. important B. challenging C. unnecessary D. uncomfortable
( )40. A bad result of taking time off after high school is that students may _____.
A. only find low-paid jobs
B. be unwilling to go to college
C. get their college degree too late
D. be discouraged by today’s society
( )41. According to Paragraph 4, going to college right after high school _____.
A. is a great chance to help other people
B. allows a student to better understand life
C. is good for a student’s future development
D. helps improve a student’s organizational abilities

Today as more and more Chinese are able to buy cars, owning a car is no longer a symbol of wealth or social status. However, your car colour can act as a mental shortcut (捷径) that expresses how you want the world to think about you. Of course, gender (性别) and age influence your choices, along with what colours are available on the lot, but that’s not all about choosing a colour. According to Nancy Lockhart, a colour marketing manager, colour preferences change throughout time and may differ (有区别) by area or vehicle type. She also believes the personality of the vehicle is as important as the personality of the buyer. “The vehicle style, design and branding can influence colour choices. A luxury (奢华) car is more popular in black and white colours, but a small and sporty car is often connected with red and colourful shades.” The following is what some experts say your car’s colour says about you.
White
If you’re driving a white vehicle, you like to present a fresh, young and modern face to the outside world. White suggests that you have taste and elegance, says Marcie Cooperman, a professor of colour theory.
Black
Black is the No. 1 colour for luxury. “Black is no doubt a power colour,” Mr Cooperman says. It declares (宣称) itself as important, classic and in control. It’s easy to understand why leaders are in favour of black cars.
Grey
The grey car driver doesn’t want to stand out. They are usually traditional and mature. As the fourth most popular car colour in the US, grey is popular on all types of vehicle sizes and brands.
Yellow
If you’re driving a yellow car, you may tell others “Don’t worry. Be happy!” Yellow shows joy and a positive attitude. Young people are drawn to yellow because they like bright colours and welcome trends and colour.
Car colours
Background ★Now many people in China have enough money to buy cars, so owning cars is not a symbol of wealth (59) more. ★People’s gender and age have (60) on their colour choices. ★According to Nancy Lockhart, people’s (61) for certain colours change during different periods of (62) and in (63) areas or vehicle types. ★Vehicle styles, designs and brandings play an important role in people’s (64) choices.
Examples ★People who choose white cars want to show that they are young, modern and elegant. They also have their own (65) for life. ★The black car drivers are usually leaders with great (66) because black declares itself as important, classic and in control. ★Grey is popular among people who care more about (67) and maturity. ★Yellow car drivers want to show the outside world that they’re (68) and positive.

As the colour of the sky and the sea, blue is many people’s favourite colour. It seems the government of Calcutta, an eastern Indian city, also likes the colour very much. Recently, it has made a decision to turn the city into a blue city. That is to say, the whole city of Calcutta is to be painted sky blue.
Calcutta is one of India’s largest cities with a population of more than 14 million people. The colour blue was chosen as the theme colour of the city because of the new Indian government’s motto (格言) — the sky is the limit (极限).
According to the new plan, all government buildings will be painted sky blue, so will all the private (私人的) buildings. Besides, the colour of the city’s famous yellow taxis will be changed to light blue and white. What’s more, a lot of famous landmarks are likely to be repainted blue.
Although Sobhan Chatterjee, Mayor (市长) of Calcutta, believes people will like the new plan because he thinks “blue is a beautiful colour and is also soothing for the eyes”, many people have got their own ideas. To them, what matters is not the theme colour of a city, but how to make the city safer, healthier and cleaner for its people. The owners of private buildings are especially unhappy about the plan because they don’t think it’s fair for them to pay to repaint their buildings.

At 10 a.m., Grandma pulled into the driveway to pick up Maura. She honked the horn (按喇叭) as she always did on their big shopping days.
Maura ran out to the car, dressed in the new dress Grandma bought her on their last trip. Maura knew that Grandma loved to see her wearing the clothes she had bought her.
As expected, Grandma told Maura some more funny things she did when she was Maura's age. Today, she told Maura how she and her best friend, Sue, were so hungry for candy one day in July that they decided to put on a performance and charge admission (收入场费). The two girls dressed up like clowns (小丑). Grandma said people laughed so hard that the two girls were able to buy all kinds of candies that day. Maura made a note to herself to try that some day.
Before they knew it, Maura and Grandma were in the city. Grandma found a parking lot, and away they went to begin their shopping!

The dog is man’s best friend. Unluckily, it can’t see colours. But its survival (生存) does not depend upon the ability to see colours. Its sense of smell is keen (灵敏的) enough to compensate for its poor eyesight, and make it able to tell one thing from another.
A great deal of scientific research on dogs supports the conclusion — they live in a colourless world. The tests done focused on (集中于) the dogs’responses (反应) to colours for food. Dogs could not tell the difference between one colour, a signal for food, and other colours, which were not for food. Similar tests on cats produced similar results. That led scientists to conclude that they are colourblind and live in a grey world, too.
The inability of most animals to see colours, from an evolutionary standpoint (进化论的观点), is quite simple to understand. Many colourblind animals have dull-coloured coats, hunt for food in the dark of night, or eat grass in the light that is not bright. Their other senses have developed so well that the inability to see colours never affects them. For them, life in a colourless world is not a problem, and doesn’t influence their survival.
Scientists can say, except man, the only animals that can see colours are monkeys and apes. Both can be trained to open a coloured door, behind which is food. And man can be trained to open a fridge door of any colour!

As the saying goes, “Once in Rome, do as the Romans do.” People from different cultures have different customs.
Do people associate (使发生联系) colours with music in the same way all around the world Recently, researchers from University of California, Berkeley have carried out a study to find out the answer.
The result of their study shows that the colour a person associated with a piece of music depends on how it makes them feel and not the culture they come from. That is to say, humans share a common emotional palette ( 情 绪 调 色 板) when it comes to music and colours.
100 men and women or so took part in the study, of which half lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and the other half in Guadalajara, Mexico. In three experiments, they listened to 18 classical music pieces by Bach, Mozart and Brahms that varied in speed and in major versus minor keys (大调和小调). And then they were asked to associate certain colours with the pieces. People in both countries associated the same
pieces of classical music with the same colours. Using a 37-colour palette, the study found that people tend to (倾向) pair lively music in major keys with lighter and brighter colours while slower-paced music in minor keys is more likely to be associated to darker and greyer colours.
“The results were remarkably strong and consistent across individuals and cultures,” said the lead researcher Professor Stephen Palmer. According to him, the findings may have implications (暗示) for creative treatment, advertising and even music player
gadgets.

Wang Huajun, a taxi driver from Hubei Province, has been on call for a special passenger for 18 years, and he drives her anywhere she needs to go.
Wang said he got to know the passenger in March, 2000. That day he saw a small woman on crutches (腋杖) and a white-haired elderly woman waiting for a taxi.
Wang stopped and helped the two into his taxi. He learned that the small woman’s name is Yang Lihua and she has had rickets (佝偻病) since she was 4 years old. That day she was taking her mother to the hospital.
When they arrived at the hospital, Wang wouldn’t receive the money they paid. Instead, he gave Yang his phone number and told her to call him whenever she needed help.
Wang kept his promise. For 18 years he has collected Yang or her family members when they have the need. He also helps her with other small things.
“For us, he is a family member now,” Yang said, adding that through his kindness, Wang has won the family’s trust.
Few people knew what Wang was doing until 2008, when Yang presented him with a silk banner (锦旗) — a traditional way to express thankfulness — at the taxi company where he worked.
Actually, it is just one of the driver’s many acts of kindness. In his 19 years of taxi driving, he has returned money he found to his passengers 12 times, which was a total of 350,000 yuan.
Wang is a role model to us all.
