Ⅳ. 阅读理解(共5小题;每小题4分,满分20分)
In people’s minds, Beijing women are taller, bold, and uninhibited, while Shanghai women are smaller in figure, and always speak in a soft voice. The image(形象)of Beijing women is usually bigger than Shanghai women’s. However, it turns out to be just the other way round after I have worked in Beijing for some time.
Everybody goes Dutch in Shanghai; even at a grand party, but in Beijing it’s usually the men’s treat. It is impossible to invite a female friend who already has a boyfriend or a young married woman out, even if you promise to see her home that night.
The conditions of the men in Beijing are no better at all. All their cells will ring one after another at 12 o’clock sharp at night. The voice on the other end is usually loud enough for anyone nearby to hear.“Where have you been! Do you remember that you’ve got a home? Now who’s with you?” and these three sentences are usually the main parts of the call.
Shanghai women could never understand this. If it’s a Shanghai woman who shouts in the phone, the Shanghai man on the other end must think that she is crazy (or drunk, perhaps). The Shanghainese go Dutch in life, and they appreciate the independence in both economic and love affairs.
Many of my friend girls in Shanghai are office ladies with very high income. The tiredness of life cannot kill their pride in saying:“I don’t depend on any men.” Thus no men can command them, for example,to force them to come back home before 10 pm. Beijingers do not admire the Shanghai way of life, anyhow. How can a couple be addressed as “a couple” when they don’t know where the other has been last night? They wondered.
1. The underlined word “uninhibited” in Paragraph One probably means .
A. relaxed enough to do as they like
B. very cautious about their behavior
C. always doing what they are told to
D. not having courage or confidence
2. By mentioning men paying bills for women in Beijing, the writer wants to show that.
A. Beijing women are respected
B. Beijing women lack independence
C. Beijing men are generous
D. Beijing men possess gentle manners
3. The conditions of Beijing men are no better because they .
A. often stay out late at night
B. have women call them at midnight
C. are treated the same as Shanghai men
D. enjoy no more freedom than the women
4. Shanghai women could never understand why .
A. Beijing women behave like that
B. Beijing men behave like that
C. Shanghai men think so differently
D. Shanghai women don’t copy Beijing women
5. In a Beijinger’s mind,it’s normal for a couple to.
A. go Dutch in life
B. know each other’s whereabouts
C. return home before 10 pm
D. suspect each other’s behavior

1.依靠 2.停车 3.出站 4.be sure 5.take off
6. check in 7.check out 8.give away 9.go through 10.air hostesses
Ⅲ. 1. C convenient 不以人作主语。
2. B be of great benefit to对……有益处/ 好处。
3. B so+adj./adv.放在句首,句子需要用部分倒装结构,排除A、C两项,由decided可知为过去时,所以选择B。
4. A It’s no use doing sth.做某事没有用。其中 argue about/ on/ over sth.辩论/争论某事; argue down 驳倒某人; argue with与……争论/争吵。
5. C Sb./Sth.is likely to do sth.某人或某物有可能做某事。
6. A pull out 拔出;驶出;pull up 向上拉;(使)停下。have sth.done 表示“请某人帮忙做某事”或指主语遭受某种情况。
7.A appreciate (sb.’s ) doing sth.即appreciate后接动名词作宾语,宾语可以带有自己的逻辑主语。
8. D work on的动作过去就开始了,现在仍然在进行。
9. C 在This is the first/second...time that...结构中,从句时态用现在完成时。如果是was,从句用过去完成时。
10. C 将来完成时指将来某一时刻已完成的动作。常用于将来完成时的时间状语如下:by the time+从句;by the end of+表示将来时间的名词;by+表示将来时间的名词等。
IV.1. A 词义猜测题。根据该词所在的句子的意思可猜出。

III.阅读理解(共5小题;每小题4分,满分20分)
It’s 2035. You have a job, a family and you’re about 40 years old. Welcome to your future life.
Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror.”Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you?re 40.You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged.
As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that.” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. ”Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appear on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies.
“Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space—and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.”Thanks to medical advances, vaccination shots(防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.
It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. ”My office. Autopilot,” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it.

Earlier, we explained how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering in the United States. And we talked about programs that can be completed online.
But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of colleges or universities that interest you. Be sure to choose more than one. Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.
Some students want to attend a small college. Others want to go to a big university. If a really big university appeals to you, then there are ones like Ohio State. That university in Columbus,Ohio,in the Midwest, has almost fifty-two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.
Ohio State provides international students with an application on its website. You can pay the application charge online with a credit card. Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.
Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs(目录)online.
You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.
Completing a college application can take some time. But answering all the questions is not enough. Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take. Another one is the ACT.
Colleges and universities may also require international students to take the TOEFL—the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

One of the most popular literary figures in American literature is a woman who spent almost half of the long life in China,a country on a continent thousands of miles from the Unite States. In her lifetime she earned this country’s most highly acclaimed(称赞) literary award-the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her prolific literary output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children, and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication. Many of those books were set in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life. Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became as she described herself, “mentally bifocal(双焦点的)”.Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile(多才多艺的) human being. As we examine the life of Pearl S. Buck, we cannot help but be aware that we are in fact meeting three separate people; a wife and mother, an internationally famous writer and a humanitarian and philanthropist(慈善家).One cannot really get to know Pearl S. To Lauder Exchange Program:
Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002—2003 year. From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady. She was always eager to join in class discussion. Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve.
Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her. The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough. I have also seen her show this curiosity in class. She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class. When others were content to accept a point, Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried.
As a student in Humanities, Gaia was required to complete a group project. The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media. It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties. Yet, they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out. As a result,Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects. The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student.
Gaia’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student. The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting. I have no doubt that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program,Stuyvesant High School, and the United States.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it. However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
16. Which of the following statements is false according to the passage?
A. Some modern drivers are not good at driving.
B. Road politeness is good sense as well as good manners.
C. It is also right to have a tiger in the driver’s seat.
D.A friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness.

C. good manners
D. modern drivers
18. Troubles on the road are usually caused by .
A. traffic jams
B. the behavior of the drivers
C. great speed
D. terrible road conditions
19. According to the writer,a good driver should .
A. beat back when forced to face rude driving
B. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
C. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to
D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
20. The underlined phrase “give rise to” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. stand up B. arise
C. rise up D. cause

In China, traffic accidents happen frequently, which have a bad effect on the whole society. In view of the existing situation,we held a heated discussion on it.
We all share the opinion that the cause of accidents is mainly due to careless drivers, who don’t follow the traffic laws as they ought to. Could you imagine what will be waiting for a heavy drinker if he drives his car at a high speed? The injuries and possible deaths will teach him an unforgettable lesson, let alone the compensation to be paid. It is obvious to us that crowded roads lead to traffic accidents as well.
In conclusion, we suggest that people should make sense of traffic law and regulations and strengthen their sense of safety.
