I would like to talk to you about space vegetables, and to show you that space vegetables are healthy and good for you.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that have been taken to and brought back from outer space. The seeds are affected by the radiation(辐射) and low gravity(重力) in outer space. When they are brought back to Earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger, healthier and more nutritious than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could give us cancer as a result of their exposure(暴露) to radiation in space. People should not be scared, though, as space vegetables are actually perfectly healthy.
Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully selected. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that the vegetables they grow will be safe to eat. There are no traces(痕迹) of radiation after testing.
Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes. Another popular space vegetable is peppers. Space peppers contain 20 percent more vitamin C than normal peppers.
After genetically modified foods(转基因食品) came onto the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes are put inside potatoes, people allergic(过敏) to nuts might get very sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified foods, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, there are no dangers of eating something unknown.
Space vegetables are safe, 1 , and good for you to eat.
Measures taken to ensure (确保) the
2 of space vegetables
Before being brought to the outer space, the 3 are carefully selected.
When brought back from space, vegetables are 4 to see whether there are traces of radiation which might 5 to cancer. The testing has 6 that they are perfectly healthy.
Advantages of space vegetables
As a 7 of the radiation and low gravity in outer space, the seeds 8 bigger and healthier vegetables containing more nutrition.

1.is said to be very rich
2.to have been put into orbit
3.believed that he is honest
1.B on Christmas Eve
4.A finish与work之间是逻辑上的动宾关系且已完成,故选A项。
5. D have sb. do sth.
6. D have sth. done
8.B have much in common with...
4.B be made up of 表示“由……
take over 表示“接管”,give up表示“放弃”,rush against 表示“与……

Make Up Your Mind to Succeed
Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s a winner.”And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的)than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation”.
Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent(才能)is genetic—you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego(自尊)isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.)But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.
1.What does the author think about the present generation?
A. They don’t do well at school.
B. They are often misunderstood.
C. They are eager to win in sports.
D. They are given too much praise.
2. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who________ .
A. doesn’t want to work hard
B. cares a lot about personal safety
C. cannot share his ideas with others
D. can succeed with the help of teachers
3. What does the growth mind-set believe?
A. Admitting failure is shameful.
B. Talent comes with one’s birth.
C. Scores should be highly valued.
D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.
4. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?
A. Encourage them to learn from failures.
B. Prevent them from making mistakes.
C. Guide them in doing little things.
D. Help them grow with praise.

A
Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable (可生物降解的) material inspired by insects’ hard outer shells. The material’s inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp (虾) shells and proteins produced from silk, is called “shrilk”. It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.
A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic’s toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and ‘60s.Decades later, however, plastic’s very durability (耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?
Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer (肥料),and so will enrich the soil.
Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.
Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they’re exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They’re also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They’re even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.
1. Paragraph 1 of the passage is mainly about shrilk’s___________ .
A .remarkable design B. interesting name
C. major features D. basic elements
2. What has become a concern about plastic?
A. Using it properly.
B. Producing it cheaply.

3. According to the inventors, shrilk has great potential partly because_________ .
A. it can help plastic degrade
B. it can be found in living things
C. its mass production has been realized
D. its raw materials are abundant in nature
4. What are the inventors doing in the lab?
A. Replacing carbon fibers with shrilk.
B. Testing shrilk’s use in wet conditions.
C. Making shrilk out of used household goods.
D. Improving shrilk’s flexibility for medical purposes.
5.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Recent Progress in Environmental Protection
B. Benefits of Insects in Scientific Research
C. The Harm of One-time Products

Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously. Jason was determined not to go against their father’s wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.
“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you’ve been playing with his new computer.”Jason said, “He told us not to touch it.”
“He won’t find out.”Mark said, “I’ll just have a quick look and shut it down.”
Mark had been scolded before for touching his father’s equipment. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.
It was a strange-looking machine—one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he worked. “It’s an experimental model,” his father had explained, “so don’t touch it under any circumstances.”But his father’s warning only served to make Mark more curious. Without any further thought, Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the centre of the screen:“SPACE TRANSPORTER.”
“Yes!”Mark cried excitedly, “It’s a computer game. I knew it! Dad’s only been pretending to work. He’s really been playing games instead.”A new message appeared on the screen:
“ENTER NAMES
VOYAGER 1:...
VOYAGER 2:...”
Mark’s fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in both of their names.
“INPUT ACCEPTED.START TRANSPORT PROGRAM. AUTO-RETRIEVE INITIATED (自动回收程序已启动).”
The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.
“I think we’d better shut it off, Mark,” Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened.
But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow (光芒),until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.
“TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL.DESTINATION (目的地):MARS.RETRIEVE DATE:2025.”

Giant leap for China
A few days ago, he was just Colonel (上校) Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space,Yang Liwei’s smile was seen across the world above the magic words: "China’s first spaceman".
The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a.m. last Wednesday by China’s Shenzhou V spacecraft, which went around the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6:23 a.m. the next day, making China the third country to successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.
Yang was satisfied with his job. "I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful," he said on a special plane to Beijing after landing. Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province,he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987,spending 1,350 hours in the air. He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later. While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China’s national flag and the United Nations' flag to the people watching on TV at home. He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap. The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems.
Anyone who saw the destruction of the US space shuttle(航天飞机)Columbia on February this year will know that Yang took a great risk.
He experienced extremely (=very) high temperatures, while the gravitational forces (重力) on take-off and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes. He has spent five years training to become a spaceman. "I eat all of my meals at the space programme’s dining room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten (幼儿园)," he said. "I’ve never met his teachers." But becoming China’s first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile (值得的). "When I boarded (=got on) the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn’t help feeling excited," he said. "I decided that I had to fly it." To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum (网上论坛) said: "Yang’s trip is a giant leap (巨大的飞跃) forward for China." China also plans to develop space walking and a space lab.
15. What is the main idea of the story?
A. China’s first manned space flight.
B. A hero with great courage.
C. The first Chinese man in space.
D. How Yang Liwei became China’s first spaceman.
16. How long did each of Yang’s orbits take on average?
A. 1 hour. B. 1.5 hours.
C. 6 hours. D. The story didn’t mention.
17. Why did the writer use "giant leap" in the title?
A. Because the space flight marked China’s great progress in the field of pace exploration.
B. Because Yang said it was a "giant leap" for mankind when he was in Shenzhou V
C. Because the space flight was a huge success.
D .Both A and B
