Bored at school now? How do you think it will look in the future? Last week, about 600 teenagers in the U.S. imagined a future changed by technology in which their lessons are taught by robots and they learn about celebrities and alien languages.
According to a survey published last week by the U.S. Internet service provider American Online( AOL), only one in 100 thinks that in the future they will walk from home to school; the rest believe they will use jet packs, and hover boards( 滑板) as everyday transport.[21世纪教育网
All the participants of the survey are teenagers born into the Internet age. The study is to show how the first cyber generation dream about a future life created by advanced technology.
Most believe there will still be schools to go to, but that technology will play an increasingly important role in learning. The 600 teens surveyed think there will still be teachers, but 37 percent imagine them to be robots. Some 24 percent believe that teachers will still be human but they will have inter-changeable microchips so that one person can teach all subjects.
More than one in two believe hover boarding will be popular, while one-third say that wearing rocket boots will be their favorite activity. Another third think jet packs will be popular. Nearly 30 percent think playing football and bike-riding will remain popular.
When it comes to the curriculum, they think future generations will be learning about robot building(63percent),alien languages(47percent) ,
celebrities( 26 percent) and R’n’B music( 22 percent).
Children will wear virtual reality helmets to bring lessons to life, say 40 percent, while over 20 percent believe they will not need lessons because microchips implanted in their head will send relevant information into the brain. Matt Whyman, adviser to the chief medical officer on youth issues of AOL, said: “ The kids seem very aware of the liberation qualities of technology.”

Listening, really listening, can improve communication and build respect with others. Communication begins by listening and then suggesting that you hear what the person is saying.
This can be recognized by focus or eye contact, body language, and reflective listening.
Focus (Eye Contact)—Focus means that you are looking directly at the person speaking and not looking off to one side or continuing to do something else. You are focused on what is being said; the speaker is the center of attention. Listening attentively is essential for positive communication.
Listening Without Interrupting—Does your body acknowledge(承认) that you are listening? Use smiles, nods, and expressions of understanding to communicate to the speaker that you are listening. It is not necessary that you agree or disagree at this time. It is more important for the person speaking to know that his or her words are respected. This strengthens communication.
Reflective Listening—Reflective listening involves hearing the feelings and meanings of the speaker. It is a re-statement (in different words) of what the speaker said. You, in essence, mirror the words of the speaker and rephrase them back to the speaker, checking for accuracy(准确)of understanding. This process affirms the speaker, indicates a respect of the person, and shows that you understand the speaker’s message. Through careful reflection of the speaker’s words, you can make clear the message and build mutual(相互的) understanding. Through reflective listening and the careful exchange of words, we learn that other people have important feelings and opinions which we need to consider. Learning to understand the importance of all ideas, not just our own, can lead to successful resolution of problems and mutual respect.

B. Expressing agreement or disagreement in time when listening.
C. Repeating his or her words from time to time.
D. Listening instead of saying anything.
3. Reflective Listening is aimed to _____.
A. show you are not absent in mind[来源:21世纪教育网]
B. make sure the speaker’s words are correct
C. checking for accuracy of understanding

After winning a big game, athletes are often asked how they attained that success .Most say their achievement is the result of grueling hard work and intense practice .Usually athletes say how hard it is to win the big games .At the opposite end of the spectrum, however,is the fact that losing the big game,or,in my case, all the games, can be even tougher.
From the spectators’ point of view, last year’s basketball season for my high school team was nothing short of an embarrassment . And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of,that season had a bigger impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since.
As a team captain,I knew it probably wouldn’t be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would lose every game?Of course not .Since six of our top players had graduated,it was clear that we were a young team who would struggle .The struggle began earlier than expected, though,as our team’s starting center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks .At some point, quitting probably passed through every player’s mind, but,in the end,we all stuck it out, vowing to work even harder.
Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us. Personally,I felt like it was no longer worth giving my all .I thought,if even the coach doesn’t believe in us,why should I?But just as my hope began to fade,a teammate called a meeting .He said,“Nobody thinks we’re going to win,and heck,we may not, but,as teammates and friends ,we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.”
Sure,it was a little cliché,but it was that moment that taught me how to be a leader .It hit me then that I may have been a captain, but I,like others in my position, certainly didn’t deserve the role .As a leader you can never quit on the team who looks up to you .It is one thing to be named captain and feel great and go through the motions, but it is quite another to be a real captain and make sure everyone works to their potential all the time.
I am sure it is great to go through high school without losing and bringing home awards .But in all honesty,I relish the fact that my team lost every game last year .It may not help me to become a better basketball player, but it already has made me a better leader and person.
4.What was the biggest problem with the author’s team last season?
A.Several key members were unable to play the games.
B.Their coach no longer wanted to instruct them.
C.There were no actual leaders on the team.
D.Most of players lost hope and wanted to quit.
5.In the text, the author seems to suggest that a good leader should________.
A.be confident about himself
B.make sure everyone goes all out
C.work hard to win the games
D.feel great about his team
6.By saying “we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.” (Paragraph 4) the teammate means that all of them should________.
A.be responsible for the losses
B.try their best on the court
C.feel thankful for what they’ve done
D.get together to win every game
7.What is the main idea the author aims to express in the text?
A.Success is the result of hard work.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.One can learn something from the failure.
D.A real leader should never give up.

Ⅵ.任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
You’ve been active in class, done all of your homework, studied hard, and you think you have understood what you’ve learned. But when the day of the test comes, your mind suddenly goes blank.
If this sounds like you, you may have a case of test anxiety—the nervous feeling that people get when they’re about to take a test.
Some people who have test anxiety might feel they don’t have much strengh, or feel their heart beating at high speed. A student with really strong test anxiety may even feel sick or pass out(昏倒).
Students experience test anxiety usually for lack of preparation. Besides, focusing on the bad things that could happen can also make you nervous. For example,
someone worrying about doing poorly might have thoughts like, “ What if I forget everything I know?” or “ What if the test is too difficult?” Too many negative expectations like these create anxiety.
Test anxiety may sound terrible, but you can take steps to lessen the feeling.
If sitting for a test gets you so stressed out that your mind goes blank, then your level of test anxiety probably needs some attention. Your teacher, your parents or your friends can be useful resources to discuss your problem with.
Many students find that their test anxiety is lessened when they have gone over their lessons carefully, for it can help build their confidence. Having confidence means you expect to do well. When you expect to do well, you’ll be able to relax.
Thinking positively is also very important. Once you’ve gone over your lessons well, tell yourself, “ I’m ready and I believe I will do well.”
And, of course, taking care of your health, such as getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food, can help keep your mind working at its best.

This is my point of view and thanks for your consideration.

In America, when the eighth-graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport.Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. Students from different grades are allowed to join these clubs. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications(申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.
Tuesday, March 27th
Bangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here are how:
1. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or televisions! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teachers say.
4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5. Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. Tests help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

For over a hundred years, right from the time when airplanes were invented, people have been working on inventing a “flying car”. It is only now, when science and technology have reached greater heights that the dream of the common man owning his own personal air vehicle seems to be possible.
A flying car is a car that can be flown in the air and used on the road. That means it has to have the basic characteristics of both an aircraft and a car. It would have to be light enough to fly in the air and strong enough to move on the road. Because a flying car would have the ability to land, it would have to be able to take the impact of hitting the road.
Its engines should have enough horse-power to lift the vehicle into the air and at the same time, be able to provide controlled power for the vehicle to move on the road. The flying car will need to have an extra engine in case there is an engine failure during a flight. Since the vehicle will be flying, it will need the wings. But as these wings will not be needed on the road, they will have to be easily foldable (可折叠的).
Needless to say, a flying car will have to be light-weight. While on the road, a vehicle is more likely to be damaged, and even a slight damage on an aircraft can prove to be dangerous. So the material used in a flying car should be both light and strong.
Because of all the requirements needed for it to work, making a flying car might seem difficult, but it is certainly not impossible. Most people expect their dream to come true, for they think flying cars are just a modern fashion.

Education plays a very important role in everybody’s life. We go to school because we want to know more about the world around us. The typical classroom used to be the place where teachers and students were working and exploring the wonderful world of knowledge together, but now everything has changed.
The Internet is one of those approaches. Learning via the Internet is a new style that seems to become successful than the traditional teaching. The Internet provides schools with a large amount of learning material that is accessible to students online. Owing to the choices of courses online, completing a program becomes much easier.
We used to go to the library when we needed information and spend hours searching for the right sources. Today there is a “library” in our house and it is available 24 hours a day. From my personal experience, being a first time mother, I find that using information online is very helpful. While I am at home with my baby, I can still search for the material I need and exchange thoughts and information with my classmates without leaving my house.
The Internet is not only a big information provider but also a money and time saver. People predict that education will be much cheaper in the future because of Internet access to information. The cost of land, buildings and wages for teachers are continuously increasing. In addition, regular courses (offline) depend heavily on books and other paper-based materials, while online education posts lectures, and assignments electronically, which saves thousands of dollars every year.
With no physical restrictions, the Internet classes and courses are also very convenient. In classroom-based education there is a limitation on the number of students while Internet education is available to everyone. Students don’t have to struggle in order to register for classes they like.
Students will have more choices to take their courses and classes online. The Internet offers a wonderful opportunity to obtain knowledge in a more convenient and less expensive way. In my opinion, online life in the future is simply inescapable.

9. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Internet Development B. Online Education

C
“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the Net.”
“I often check my e-mail forty times a day.”
“I often spend more than three hours during one time on the Net.”
“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life’ friends.”
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction called Internet addiction. Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an addiction like drug use. People lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried, and they called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the Net for several days straight.
Studies show that about 6% to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. They spend more time in cyberspace than in the real world of friends and family.
Is “surfing the Net” a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms:
You do not go to attend important family activities or you do not do school work because you like to spend hours on the Internet.
You can’t wait for your next online time.
You plan to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.
You go out with your friends less and less.[来源:21世纪教育网]

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
True friends are rare to come by these days. Even if you believe you’ve connected with someone, how do you really know he is a true friend? And often you will find that someone who you thought you could trust may have let you down. There are ways you can know if a friendship is true and how you can hold onto that friend.
A true friend is someone who will be there for you no matter what happens. In good times and bad times, he will stand by you. He will accept you for who you are without trying to change you, and he will be there to help you grow in new ways.
Trust is another important aspect. A true friend will keep your secrets. He will be honest and be someone you can depend on. He will listen and be someone you know you can talk things over with, even if he may not have advice to share with you.
Friendship is a two-way street though. To find true friends and keep them, you must in turn be the same as well. Be there for them in their hard times and share the good times with them. Be someone your friends can depend on as well and offer them the same things they give to you. A friendship will fall apart fast if only one person is giving and putting all the effort in. If you are the only one making an effort, be honest.
There will be barriers in the road but that is the test of true friendship. If it can survive those barriers,it will be stronger and better than ever. St Thomas Aquinas said, “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship” and it holds true.
How to find a true friend?

VII.阅读理解
A
There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling.
If spelling becomes the only point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will only write words within his spelling range. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes .” It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil’s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted(略过) to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had concentrated on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation (呈现) would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.

The solar system is made up of the sun and all the objects that travel around it. The planets are the largest objects that circle the sun. There are eight planets altogether, some of which are made up of rock and iron. The Earth is a rocky planet. But the largest planets are not Earth-like, one of which is Jupiter.
In the solar system no planet is larger than Jupiter. Ancient scientists named the planet after the king of the Roman gods. Jupiter is the fifth closest planet to the sun. It lies after Mars but before Saturn. The closest planet to the sun is Mercury, while Neptune is the farthest one. The Earth is farther from the sun than Mercury but closer than Mars.
Like all the planets, Jupiter orbits around the sun.
It takes 365 days for the Earth to complete one orbit.
But it takes Jupiter almost twelve years to travel around the sun. Jupiter also spins, just as the Earth does. On the Earth one spin takes 24 hours. But Jupiter spins very fast. It only takes ten hours for Jupiter to complete its spin.
Jupiter’s surface cannot be seen from the Earth. Many layers (层) of thick clouds surround the planet. But scientists have ideas about what its surface is like. They think that Jupiter is mostly made up of gas and liquid.
Jupiter’s clouds are very cold. They may be as much as 236 degrees below zero. But under the clouds, the planet is very hot; the temperature can climb to 34,000 degrees. Some scientists say that life forms might be able to exits in Jupiter’s clouds. But that has not been proved yet.
Jupiter has fifteen more moons than the Earth. Some of these moons are made of ice. Others seem to be made of rock. Jupiter also has a thin ring around it; the planet Saturn is famous for rings like these.
Several spaceships have flown past Jupiter. They have taken pictures of it and also tested its clouds. That is how scientists have learned more about Jupiter.
6. Scientists think Jupiter is probably made up of _________.
A. rock and iron
B. many layers of thick clouds
C. gas and liquid
D. ice and rock
7. From the passage, we know _______ is the closest to the sun, then ________, _________, _________, and ________, while _____ is the farther away.
A. Mercury; Mars; the Earth; Jupiter; Saturn; Neptune
B. Mercury; the Earth; Saturn; Jupiter; Mars; Neptune
C. Neptune; the Earth; Mars; Jupiter; Saturn; Mer-
cury
D. Mercury; the Earth; Mars; Jupiter; Saturn; Neptune
8. The surface of Jupiter cannot be seen from the Earth because .
A. it is hidden under the thick clouds
B. it is made up of something invisible
C. it lies between Mars and Saturn
D. it orbits around the sun and spins too fast
9. Scientists think that Jupiter might be able to support life because ________.
A. they have observed it directly from the Earth
B. they have learned about it with the help of the spaceships
C. its clouds are cold and thick enough
D. the planet is very hot and it has a thin ring
10. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. It takes Jupiter more than twelve years to travel around the sun.
B. It takes Jupiter less time to complete its spin than the Earth.
C. Jupiter has sixteen moons altogether.
D. Saturn is famous for its rings.

Back to School: Why Grit(毅力) Is More Important than Good Grades?
The back-to-school season is upon us, and once again, parents all over the country have loaded their kids’ backpacks up with snack packs and school supplies. It’s a good moment to reflect on what else we should be giving our kids as they head off to school.
American parents are feeling particularly anxious about that question this year. The educational process feels more than ever like a race, one that starts in preschool and doesn’t end until your child is admitted to a perfect college. Most parents are more worried than they need to be about their children’s grades, test scores and IQ. And what we don’t think about enough is how to help our children build their character—how to help them develop skills like perseverance (毅力), optimism (乐观), and self-control, which together do more to determine success than SAT scores or IQ.
There is growing evidence that our anxiety about our children’s school performance may actually be holding them back from learning some of these valuable skills. If you’re concerned only with a child’s GPA, then you will likely choose to minimize(降低,贬低) the challenges the child faces in school. With real challenge comes the risk of real failure. And in a competitive academic(学业的,学术的) environment, the idea of failure can be very scary, to students and parents alike.
But experiencing failure is an important part of building character. Recent research by a team of psychologists found that adults who had experienced little or no failure growing up were actually less happy and less confident than those who had experienced a few failures in childhood. “Overcoming those difficulties,” the researchers said, “could teach effective coping skills, help engage social support networks, create a sense of mastery over past adversity, and develop beliefs in the ability to cope(处理) successfully in the future.”
By contrast, when we protect our children from every possible failure—when we call their teachers to get an extension on a paper; when we urge them to choose only those subjects they’re good at—we are denying them those same character-building experiences. As the psychologists Madeline Levine and Dan Kindlon have written, that can lead to difficulties in adolescence and young adulthood; when overprotected young people finally confront real problems on their own, they don’t know how to overcome them.
In the classroom and outside of it, American parents need to encourage children to take chances, to challenge themselves, to risk failure. In the meantime, giving our kids room to fail may be one of the best ways we can help them succeed.

III.阅读理解
A
Leaving junior high school, and going up to the big school was a very frightening change for me. I went there with no friends. The only two people who came from my previous school were two girls, Donna Davis and Sakjinda Rai, but I developed little friendship with them. At first I was scared(害怕的)and looked stupid. But after a few months, I tried keeping my arms open and making friends with people around me.
After an unsuccessful relationship with Amit Sharmar, who ran away from me whenever I said hello to him, Sher Bhachu joined me, and we seemed to have a bit in common. So I made my first friend, and I wasn’t on my own any more! But after a few days, he broke his leg, and was off for a couple of months! I was on my own again!
Anyway, when Sher finally did return, I introduced him to another friend of mine, Graeme Parker. They got on like a house on fire, but unfortunately that little threesome(三人一组)only managed to last about a week or two before they had a bit of fight, and poor Graeme went his own way. Today there are all kinds of Para cord bracelets, made of colored strings. Girls like thinner and colorful bracelets. Many choose to make the bracelets by themselves for their dear friends. This not only appeals more to the feelings of people but also makes them know how much their friends mean to them. People keep the bracelets given by their friends long. Many people choose colored strings keeping the depth of their friendship in mind. White, yellow, orange and red show the different levels of friendship. My father and I started our morning by moving quickly into the local store. I waited in the line at the Starbucks counter while he shopped around to pick up a few things.
As I was starting there I become aware of an elderly women, with untidy hair, wearing layers upon layers of old clothing, hunchbacked (弯背的) behind me in line. She had a few things for washing and seemed to want the Starbucks cashier to ring up since that queue was shorter than the queues in the store.
At some point I became aware of her edging (慢慢挪动) closer behind me — closer than I was comfortable with! I instinctively (本能地) placed a hand over my purse and drew it close to me. My fear and imagination raced creating wild stories about this homeless woman who might try to steal from me.
Then it was my turn to order. As the cashier rang Ypsilanti my total, I discovered I was 67 cents short. I called my father but he was hard of hearing. He asked me to repeat what I said but he still couldn’t make me out. At that point, a long, grey arm, with holes in its sleeves, reached over from behind me. She laid 67 cents out on the counter, saying, “Here, we all need some help sometimes.”
I was stunned! Here was a woman who clearly had very little to give and was in great need herself. I had judged her wrongly and she had offered to reach out to help me!

As is known to us, Washington University in St. Louis became the first college in the United States to ban (禁止) selling bottled water in 2009. Since then, more than a dozen small colleges and schools have done the same. The ban isn’t because the schools don’t want students to have easy access to water. Instead, the goal is to encourage students to bring reusable bottles to save money and, more importantly, to save the environment.
Many people believe that producing and using bottled water not only wastes money but also harms the environment. They say that bottled water is unnecessary because public water supplies in the U.S. are among the best in the world. These people believe that water fountains and reusable bottles with easy access to filling stations are a better choice.
But the makers of bottled water argue that plastic bottles make up a small portion of the nation’s total waste. They say it’s unfair to single out (单独挑出) their product when so many other items are packaged (包装) in plastic containers, and what’s more, water is a healthy choice compared to some sodas and juices that are also sold at school.
What do you think: Should sales of bottle water be banned from schools? We want to hear your opinion. Write a 200-words response. Send it to tfkasks4you@timeforkids.com . Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade level an contact information for your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline (截止时间) for responding is August 31, 2012.

In 1971 a young man who grew up very poor was traveling across the country, trying to make a new start for himself. Along the way he had completely run out of money and was forced to spend the night in his car. This continued until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast.
After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found
himself lying to the waiter, telling him he had lost his wallet. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked behind the chair where the young man had been sitting. He bent down, and came up with a $20 bill that looked as if it had fallen on the floor. “Son, you must have dropped this ,” the owner said. The young man couldn’t believe his luck! He quickly paid for the breakfast, left a tip, bought gas with the change, and headed West.
On the way out of town, he began to understand what that fellow did. Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. “Maybe that fellow just knew I was in trouble and he helped me in a way that didn’t embarrass (使困窘) me. So I just made a promise to help other people if I can.”

Plants that live in the rainforest have adapted in amazing ways to several very difficult conditions. This means that the plant has changed something in its “body” or “habits” to make it easier to survive in difficult conditions. There are several conditions they have had to adapt to. First, the soil of the forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich, or easy to grow in. Next is the problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the rainforest are food for animals that live there.
The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lack of sunlight in the rainforest’s lower levels. Plants have adapted to this problem in several ways. Many plants have very large leaves. The large leaf is helpful because it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf has, the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that their leaves can grab all available sunlight. Other plants called lianas(climbing woody vines) have adapted by rooting themselves in the soil of the forest floor and growing up the trees until they reach the canopy layer. Still other plants, such as epiphytes, have adapted by growing directly on the trees’ trunks and branches in the canopy and understory layers of the rainforest.
An adaptation to the large amounts of rainfall that many rainforest plants have is called “drip tips”. Their leaves are tapered (逐渐变细) to a sharp point at the end. This allows water to run off the leaf quickly. There are many other adaptations that rainforest plants have made to their environment. These will be discussed in detail, as we investigate the plants of the rainforest!
10. Which of the following is a difficulty that the rainforest plants have to face?
A. Changes in their “body” or “habits”.
B. Soil that is not very deep.
C. Epiphytes that grow on trees’ trunks.
D. The worsening of the natural environment.
11. How do lianas adapt to the environment in the rainforest?
A. They grow under big leaves for protection.
B. They rely on other plants to reach the canopy layer.
C. They change their leaf structure constantly.
D. They grow on other plants’ branches.
12. The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to “ ”.
A. the take-in of sunlight
B. the large amounts of rainfall
C. the leaves’ having a sharp point at the end
D. water’s running off the leaves quickly
13. What can be inferred about rainforest plants?
A. They have to face dangers not only from animals but also from each other.
B. Too little sunlight and too much water are the biggest problems they face.
C. Different kinds of plants have different ways to absorb sunlight.
D. All of their adaptations have been investigated in detail.
14. What would be the best title of the passage?

When it comes to the world of computers, green computing is becoming popular. But what is green computing?
The term “green computing” is one that is being used in many different markets and areas all over the world in today’s global technology. However, many computer users aren’t sure what it means. Green computing is actually quite easy to explain and to do—it is basically learning to use computer resources more efficiently to protect the environment as well as saving energy. The main goal is to reduce the use of energy and materials that harm the environment.
Green computing started as early as 1992, when the EPA created Energy Star program that improved computing equipment and technologies. Because of this program sleep pattern appeared and many computer users began to adopt this policy to help save energy when they were not using their computers. In October of 2006, Energy Star made the requirements stricter for computers. Because of these new requirements, there are over 20 states that have now set up a special recycling program for old computers to help with green computing.
Many of today’s IT systems are beginning to rely on both people and hardware to help push their computer systems toward a more green computing system to help both the company and others. This is a hard balance to achieve, as it has to satisfy users. Many companies are learning the best ways that they can go greener when it comes to their computing and also help their business in the process. While many home computer users may not be quite as familiar with green computing as large firms, this term is starting to become more mainstream all around the world.

Home stay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Home stays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential (居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by underground.
Meal Plans Available

◇Breakfast and Dinner
◇Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It's important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal (谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee, cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a continental breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host's permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long stay student. It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared (害怕) on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It can also make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.

(2013·宁波高一检测)
Psy, a Korean famous K-pop singer, came with his popular song “Gangnam(江南) Style” which is well-known overnight in 2012. As a matter of fact, Gangnam is an upper-class(上层的) community, which lies in Seoul’s southeast, whose population is less than 5% of Seoul.
But for many people, question still remains: what’s the style of Gangnam anyway? What does it look like hidden by the horsey-dance? Here is some information on Gangnam related to the song.
1. Getting the look of Gangnam Style
There are many brands (品牌) in Gangnam. Along the blocks of Cheongdam and Shinsa, it’s easy to catch the international and fashion-forward brands like Chanel, Prada and so on. Therefore, Gangnam is a hot place for some fashion people. Besides, some home-grown brands are also apples in their eyes, for example, Johnny Hates Jazz. Stores here aren’t cheap, but that's the price you pay to “dress classy, and dance crazy” as Psy puts it.
2. Enjoying the beautiful fountain
Named the world’s “longest bridge fountain” in 2008 by the Guinness World Records(世界吉尼斯纪录), the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain(月光彩虹喷泉) is 1,140 meters of flowing water lit by LED lights. Running along the Banpo Bridge, it attracts people who enjoy the view of the Han River. The fountain works three times a day during weekdays, and doubles on weekends, shooting tons of water every minute. If you're lucky, you might see fireworks from one of the river's boats after sunset, which is considered the best scenery of Gangnam.
3. Letting your hair down while trotting (像马一样小跑)
If you, like Psy, are looking for “a girl who puts her hair down when the nighttime comes”, then you can trot to one of Gangnam’s colorful nightclubs. Anyway, they’re good places to practice the horsey-dance. One of the top clubs in the country, even in Asia, is Club Ellui, which invites hot-shot K-pop stars like JYP (Park Jin-young), 2PM and GD & Top, and often invites international singers by cooperating (合作) with overseas (海外的) clubs such as Space Ibiza and Ministry of Sound. Some club fans head there on a Friday or Saturday, and prepare to gather here and stay until the next day.

Barditch High School decided to hold an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(嘟囔声)when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from and old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak:
“I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination.”
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued:
“It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar (呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown.

You might think body language is universal. After all, we’re the same species, right? But basics like what is considered a polite greeting and definitions of “personal space” vary widely from culture to culture. Americans, for instance, are considered rather reserved in the way they greet friends, and they define personal space more broadly than most other cultures. Knowing how another culture’s basic body language differs from yours may be of use next time you travel internationally.
Mind how you meet and greet. Americans and Canadians, male and female, tend to greet each other with a nice firm handshake. In Asian countries, the polite form of greeting is to bow, and the lower you bow, the deeper respect you have for the person you are bowing to. In Spain, Portugal, Italy and Eastern Europe, men kiss each other on the cheek.
Be careful about eye contact. In America, intermittent(断断续续的) eye contact is preferable in a conversation—unless it’s someone you care deeply for. In Middle Eastern countries, intense prolonged(持久的) eye contact is the norm, and the person you’re speaking with will move very close to you to maintain it. The Japanese, on the other hand, consider it an invasion of privacy, and rarely look another person in the eye.
Americans, in general, smile when they meet or greet someone. Koreans, however, think it’s rude for adults to smile in public—to them, smiling in public is a sign of embarrassment.
Don’t point. Most Americans think nothing of pointing at an object or another person. Native Americans consider it extremely rude to point with a finger, and instead they point with their chin. It’s also rude to point with a finger in China; the polite alternative is to use the whole hand, palm facing up.
Give the right amount of space. In Asian cultures, particularly in China, the concept of personal space (generally defined in America as a three-to-four-foot circle for casual and business acquaintances) is nearly nonexistent. Strangers regularly touch bodies when standing in line for, say, movie tickets. People in Scandinavian countries, on the other hand, need more personal space than we do.
