1.过去进行时 2.直接引语和间接引语
1.What was the girl doing when the UFO took off?
当飞碟起飞时那个女孩在做什么?
【考点】(1)本句的主句时态为过去进行时。过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间内正在发生的动作或反复发生的动作。
Nick was sleeping at home at 10:00 p.m.last night.
昨天晚上十点尼克正在家里睡觉。
(2)take off 在此作“起飞”讲。
The plane will take off in five minutes.
飞机将在五分钟后起飞。
(3)when引导时间状语从句,从句中的谓语动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。
My mother was cooking when I got home.
当我到家的时候妈妈正在做饭。
【拓展】take off还可以作“脱掉”讲。
Don't take off your sweater.It's cold outside.
别脱掉你的毛衣。外面很冷。
【辨析】when与while
when与while作连词时的比较见下表:
相同点
都可以引导时间状语从句,意为“当……的时候”。
不同点

所引导的从句中的动词既可是延续性动词,也可是非延续性(终止性)动词,从句中时态常用一般现在时或一般过去时。21世纪教育网[来源:21世纪教育网]
while
所引导的时间状语从句中谓语动词常用延续性动词,主从句动作若同时发生则主从句都用进行时态。
(延续性动词就是表示可以持续发生一段时间的动作的动词,如wait,talk,sleep等。延续性动词可以与表示一段时间的状语连用。非延续性动词指动作瞬间完成,不能与表示一段时间的状语连用,如stop,open,join等。)
提醒:while作连词时意为“然而”,表示对比关系;while还可以作名词,表示“一会儿;一段时间”。

【辨析】happen与take place
happen和take place都有“发生”之意,其不同之处在于:
(1)happen使用广泛,指事情的发生,特别是偶然发生,可以指“(某人)发生了什么事”,也可指“(某物)发生了什么情况”。
I think no one knows when the earthquake will happen.
我认为没有人知道什么时候会发生地震。
(2)take place常指经过安排的,其主语常是表“运动,活动,会议”的名词。
The Olympic Games take place every four years.
奥林匹克运动会每4年举行一次。
