The media (媒体) influence the way young people see themselves. TV, movies and magazines show what the “perfect” body should look like. Many times when people especially girls, see these images (形象), they feel bad about themselves.
“I’m not very pretty. I am too fat. How can anyone like me ” These thoughts followed Lily, a 12-year-old girl, as she slowly walked away from the mirror. “I struggled with my self-image. Every day I stared at myself in the mirror hoping to see a beautiful girl. But sadly, in my eyes, I saw an ugly fat girl instead,” she said.

Of the many kinds of vegetables grown all over the world, which remains the favourite of young and old alike The potato, of course.
Worldwide, the yearly potato harvest is over 6 billion bags. Each bag contains 100 pounds of potatoes. Here in the United States, farmers fill about 400 million bags a year. That may seem like a lot, but the United States isn’t the first among world potato growers. Polish farmers dig up just over 800 million bags a year, while the Russians harvest nearly 1.5 billion bags.
The first potatoes were grown by the Incas of South America, more than 400 years ago. Their descendants (后裔) in Ecuador and Chile continued to grow the vegetable as high as 14,000 feet up in the Andes Mountains. Early Spanish explorers shipped potatoes to Europe, and they found their way to North America in the early 1600s.
People eat potatoes in many ways. However, in the United States most potatoes are eaten in the form of French fries. Before any fry makes it to the customers, it must pass many tests. If the potato fails any one of these tests, it won’t be accepted. To start with, only Russet Burbank potatoes are used. These Idaho potatoes have less water content (含量) than other kinds, which can have as much as 80 per cent water. The potatoes are cut into “shoestrings” shapes, and then fried in a special kind of oil.
Before shipping, every shoestring is measured. Forty per cent of shoestrings must be between two and three inches long. Another 40 per cent have to be over three inches. What about the 20 per cent that are left Well, a few short fries in a bag are okay.
Potatoes play such an important part in our lives. No wonder most people agree that this part of the food industry is no “small potatoes”.

Shannon doesn’t come from a rich family. In fact, when he was in high school, few people believed he would make it into a top college. He had to take care of his three young baby siblings (兄弟姐妹) until they went to sleep and stay up until 4 a.m. to do his homework. After working 150 hours, he was able to buy a laptop by himself. However, living without WiFi in his house, he had to put his laptop out of his window to steal his neighbour’s WiFi to finish his schoolwork. As the son of a public store worker and an immigrant (移民), Shannon was often laughed at and told “only the children of doctors and lawyers get to go to Ivy League Schools”. The eight Ivy League universities including Yale and Harvard are among the most famous American universities.
Despite (尽管) all the difficulties, Shannon finally graduated from Harvard, becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college. After sharing his life story on a social networking website, he has touched the hearts of many people from all around the world. “Throughout my life I have cleaned toilets, shelved books and sold clothing so I could chase my dreams and travel the world. Just raise your head, roll up your sleeves, and work hard, knowing every person is valuable and deserves a chance to become the person they want to be.”

阅读短文,按要求回答问题。
Language is very important in our daily life. But do you know how many living languages there are in the world today Over 5,000! Then, how can people communicate with each other since nobody can speak all these languages
The answer to this problem is to use English. You may wonder why not Chinese, French or Russian — they are also among the six working languages of the UN. It is because these languages are not spoken by very many people outside their native lands (本国).
In the world today, English is used whenever people from different countries come together. For example, if you go to any international meeting or the Olympic Games, you will find English is always used. And if you travel to India, or Germany, or France, or to any other country to do business, you, too, are often expected to speak English. So when a German buys something from a Chinese, or a Frenchman sells something to a Russian, they may all speak English instead of their native languages! And besides, more than three fifths of the business letters around the world are written in English.
Even if you are staying at home, you can still travel in the world of English. English programmes are heard over the radio. English films are shown on TV. And English newspapers and magazines are sent to you from all over the world.
Now you can see English is such an important language. It will help you a lot in your work and study.

Rabbits
If you have more than one rabbit, keep them together as they love to be part of a group. They like to be around you too, so make sure you check on them at least twice a day and give them some love and attention. Ask a vet (兽医) for advice on the vaccinations (接种疫苗) and food your rabbits will need.
Cats
When you first get your cat, you need to take it to the vet to check for any problem. You can also ask the vet questions about the kind of food to feed your cat and how to train your cat to use the litter tray (猫砂盘). Cats need a space of their own, so set up an area just for them, toys included!
Dogs
You need to take your dog to the vet. Dogs may need vaccinations and this is also your chance to ask the vet any question. The vet will tell you the best food to feed your dog and signs to look out for if your dog is not feeling well. You also need to make sure your dog socializes with lots of other dogs!
Goldfish
Choose a big bowl or tank (缸). Goldfish may be teeny but they need lots of space to swim around! Make sure their bowl or tank is kept clean too as this will help your fish to live longer. I never called my father worthless (没用的). That was his own word for himself.
He said it on the phone after I told him I was flying down to see him, from my home in Alaska to Florida. He had a stroke (中风) the week before and then couldn't speak very well.
“I'll see you in about three weeks!” I said, trying to make my voice cheerful, to make him comfortable. “I'mmm ... not ... worth ... ,”he said slowly, in a low voice.
I knew what he meant. Actually, he did nothing meaningful to support his family. He didn't do a job, leaving the family badly poor throughout my childhood. He seemed unable to form normal relationships, and didn't treat his children as well as other fathers. Soon after I grew up and left our house, he moved to Florida to live alone. I was glad.
I saw my father three times in the next thirty years. Each time when I expected to hear some warm words from him, he would say nothing to me. The last time I saw him, I decided never to go back.
But eight years later, I felt something stronger. I wanted to forgive (原谅) him. I began to try, moving slowly from “need love” to “gift (给予) love”. I began to share meals with him, watch TV in his room and read to him.
And love came back. Yes, in small things. He called me “baby” one day. He phoned on my birthday. When I came to visit, he didn't want me to leave. All of this was new. All of this touched every part of me. My father was touched as well. I believed he felt loved, perhaps for the first time.
We cannot help all the broken families of the world, but we can begin here: with ourselves and our own families.

He was always writing. He kept at it throughout his life. Believe it or not, his English teacher once told him he was not very good at writing down his ideas and that he would never become a good writer. Luckily, he didn't give up. His name was Ronald Dahl.
Dahl was born on September 13, 1916. His parents were from Norway. He was educated in England but did not attend a university. Instead, he went to work right away at Shell Oil Company. When World War II started, Dahl left Shell and joined the Royal Air Force to become a fighter pilot. After coming home from war, a friend encouraged him to write a story about what had happened. He did it and sent his story to an American magazine called The Saturday Evening Post. Americans liked his story, and he was paid to write many more. Dahl wrote some more stories based on his experiences as a fighter pilot, and soon he wrote his first novel, The Gremlins (1943). Filmmaker Walt Disney read the novel and liked it. He asked Dahl whether he could make a movie based on the novel. That movie was never made, but Dahl felt it a great honour to be asked to.
Dahl finally turned his attention toward writing mainly for children. His own children encouraged him to create some stories for them at bedtime. This helped him make up a lot of good stories. He wrote as many as nineteen novels for children. The most famous of these novels include James and the Giant Peach (1961), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Matilda (1988).
Ronald Dahl died on November 23, 1990. His books continue to bring lots of enjoyment to millions of children and their parents throughout the world.

Every year thousands of people leave the comforts of their homes to learn a foreign language in another country. But is it really a good decision to learn a language by studying abroad Here are some advantages and disadvantages (优势和劣势):
Advantages
You are surrounded (包围) by the local language.
When you are in a foreign country, the local language comes easier and faster because the language is everywhere — on the streets, in the stores, on the TV — you can’t get away from it.
Your eyes are opened to the world.
We often grow up thinking that our way of doing things is the only way, or sometimes the best way. But living in a new culture helps us realize new ways of doing things. Also, you may get to know classmates worldwide.
You learn to take care of yourself.
Living in another country, even if it is with a host family, means you might be doing things you may not have done in your home country. These include cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, washing clothes, etc. You may think of this as a disadvantage, but many international students are proud that they have become very independent (独立的) when they go home.
Disadvantages
Studying abroad does not mean you will learn the local language magically.
Many people think that they just need to live in another country and they will learn the local language. This is not completely true. You still need to pay attention and study. There are people who have lived in foreign countries for many, many years without knowing the language well.
You will probably go through some hard times.
You will probably have times when you miss your family, friends, food, and everything familiar (熟悉的). Almost everyone goes through some culture shock. You will have to realize and accept that it will take some time to get used to a new way of living.
Learning languages abroad
Advantages ★It is (46) and fast for you to learn the local language which is the (47) language for the local people. ★It is (48) for you to get to know new ways of doing things, and you may have new classmates from all over the (49) . ★You might learn to do everything (50) , and are (51) of being independent when you go home.

Next month, Julie will turn 21. It will be a very special day for Julie because it will be her first birthday at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.
Julie will spend the day with Sunshine, her new best friend. They’ll celebrate the day enjoying sunshine and sharing delicious food. They’ll spend time playing — and just enjoying being together.
Julie is a kind of monkey called a rhesus macaque (恒河猴). For about ten years, Julie lived in a laboratory (实验室). There, she was used for medical research. She was then retired (使退休) to a zoo where she lived for another ten years. Earlier this year, Julie’s long-time mate at the zoo died. Zookeepers felt quite sorry about that and they thought Julie would be happier living with another rhesus macaque. That’s when she came to Black Beauty Ranch — and where she met Sunshine.
“At the very beginning, we thought it would take a very long time for them to be friendly with each other,” says Noelle Almrud, director (负责人) of Black Beauty Ranch. “But the meeting between Julie and Sunshine went very well.”
Within two days, the girls had become friends. “They’ve been grooming (梳毛) each other,” adds Noelle. “It shows that they love each other. We’re just excited that they’re happy with each other.”

五、One possible version:
Growing up
Growing up is like a long journey. I’ve learned a lot on the way. I learn about the world in different ways. Reading books helps me learn about people in different times and places. Also, my parents teach me how to be a kind person. At school, I learn how to get along well with my classmates and teachers. On the way I have my problems. For example, I can’t achieve a balance between work and play. Then my head teacher tells me to make a study plan and work out the time I can spend on my hobbies. I think when we face difficulty, we should never give up easily. And having a good relationship with parents, teachers and classmates is important in our lives. Growing up is more important than success.
