三、阅读理解

When you watch TV programmes about wild animals, it is surprising to see how an antelope(羚羊) can run away from a strong lion. In the wild, everyone has its own way to protect itself. Even plants have their own ways to fight off enemies(敌人).
Over millions of years, plants have developed their own defense system(防卫系统). Chemicals(化学物质)are often used by plants to survive. By making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits poisonous(有毒) to enemies, plants can fight back.
One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree. The British scientist David Cameron has found when an animal eats the tree's leaves, the amount(量) of poison(毒) increases(增加) in the other leaves. “It's like the injured leaves telephoning the others to fight together against the enemy," he said.
The tree also sends defense messages to neighbouring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle trees in the nearby 45 metres will get the message and produce more poison within 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats too many of the trees' leaves, he will die.
Every kind of plant or tree is good at producing a special set of chemicals. Herbivores, like rabbits, can safely eat the leaves of one tree, but they may be poisoned by its neighbour.
In this way, plants have not only developed their own defense system, but also shared it with others. This makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy(毁坏) even a small area of forest.

The Lion looks at the ditch and says, “I can jump over it.”
“Can you ” the Scarecrow says. “That's good. You can take us across on your back, one by one.”
“Who wants to go first ” the Lion says.
“Me!” the Scarecrow says and he gets on the Lion's back. The Lion jumps across the ditch easily. Then he jumps back and takes Dorothy and Toto. Finally he takes the Tin Woodman across the ditch.
Later in the afternoon, they come to a wide river.
“How can we cross the river ” Dorothy asks.
“Easy!” the Scarecrow replies. “The Tin Woodman can cut down some trees and build a raft. We can cross the river on that.”
“That's a good idea,” the Lion says to the Scarecrow, “One would believe you had brains in your head, instead of straw!”
But it takes time to make a raft, and it's very late when the Tin Woodman finishes it. So they find a cozy place under the trees where they sleep well until the morning. That night, Dorothy dreams of flying to the Emerald City and finding the good Wizard Oz, who would soon send her back to Kansas.

Milu deer(麋鹿), a kind of animal with large horns(角), used to be common in China long ago. Like other deer, they lived together and ate grass and the soft parts of trees. Milu deer were often killed for food or sport. The Ming and Qing dynasties did not protect them and many were killed. That is how the Milu deer disappeared(消失) from China.
Luckily before all of them were killed, some took deer to Britain to improve the environment of the beautiful park which belonged to the Duke of Bedford(贝德福特公爵). He liked them so much that he took them from China to Britain. Milu deer liked the cool, wet weather in England and their number increased(增加) year by year. As a result, when in 1985 the government of China wanted to bring back the Milu deer, the Duke of Bedford was able to help. The first deer came back to China to the Nanhaizi Milu park 20 kilometers south of Beijing and in 1986 the WWF chose 39 from England to give away the Chinese government to live in Dafeng, Yancheng ,Jiangsu province.
The deer certainly seem happy to be back in China because their number grows up quickly. There are now so many than before that a new park has been opened for them in Hubei Province. At the moment the Milu deer live in centres where people protect and care for them well. It is hoped that one day there will be enough animals to let them live in the wild again.
