may / might 的用法
情态动词may / might，没有人称和数的变化，在句子中不能单独作谓语。后面直接跟动词原形（即不带to 的不定式）构成合成谓语，常用于下列几种情况：
She may / might go to Shanghai next week.
下周她可能到上海去。
He may / might be writing a letter.
他可能正在写信。
He may (may not) come here tomorrow.
他明天也许会（不会）来这儿。
1. may/ might表示推测，常译成“也许，可能”等, might 的可能性比may要小。否定形式常用may not / might not。如：
2. probably是副词，意思是“大概；或许；很可能” ， 其可能性超过一半。
I'll be probably free then.
那时我大概就有空了。
We will probably leave on Sunday.
我们很可能星期天离开。
3. 表示可能的方式有很多，除使用情态动词may / might、 副词probably以外，还可以使用maybe、 perhaps和possibly 。
maybe、 perhaps和possibly都有“可能, 或许”的意思。 perhaps和maybe指“或许”,其可能性大致为一半；possibly仅指“也许”“有可能”，其可能性低于一半。
maybe比perhaps更口语化， 且要用于句首； perhaps可用于句末、句中、句首。如：
Maybe I will go with them.
也许我会和他们一起去。
Perhaps / Maybe he will succeed.
他也许会成功。
There’s possibly something wrong with the machine.
这台机器可能出问题了。
英语中表示可能的方式有很多，以下是几种常用的表达方法：
It is possible to do sth. 做某事是可能的
It is possible to get to the airport before seven.
七点前可能到达机场。
It is possible for you to catch the train.
你有可能赶上那趟火车。
It is possible + that 从句
It is possible that I told him the wrong time.
可能我告诉了他错误的时间。
主语 + will probably / possibly + v.
Look at those dark clouds. It will probably rain.
瞧瞧那堆乌云, 很有可能会下雨。

可能会对我眼睛不好。
may/ might表示请求许可时，译为“可以”。 might表示的语气更加委婉、客气。虽然may有自己的否定形式may not，但否定回答常用cannot、must not来表达否定意思。

The Amazon Rainforest covers over a billion
acres, encompassing areas in Brazil, Venezuela,
Colombia and the Eastern Andean region of
Ecuador and Peru. The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the “Lungs of our Planet” because it provides the essential environmental world service, continuously recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. More than 20 percent of the oxygen in the world is produced in the Amazon Rainforest.
10% of the world’s known species live in the
Amazon rainforest. Among them, there are about 20% of the world’s bird species. It is
home to around 2 and a half million different
insect species as well as over 40,000 plant
species. There are also a number of dangerous
species living in the Amazon rainforest, such as
the cougar (美洲狮), jaguar (美洲豹) and
anaconda (水蟒).
In both 2005 and 2010 the Amazon rainforest suffered severe droughts, which killed off large amounts of vegetation (植物) in the worst affected areas. A recent study by climate change experts suggests that a 3°C rise in world temperatures by the year 2010 would destroy around 75% of the Amazon rainforest. So the protection of the Amazon rainforest still remains an issue.
