Leonardo da Vinci only painted thirteen paintings in his life. (That’s a small number, but each and every one is a treasure.) And three of those thirteen weren’t finished.
The story is that in 1505 a rich silk businessman wanted a portrait (肖像) of his wife. He asked Leonardo to paint it. Leonardo had told friends that he was tired of painting. He meant that painting didn’t bring him much joy anymore. But perhaps he needed the money. Or perhaps the woman’s face caught his interest, especially her smile. Whatever the reason, Leonardo took the job. And he finished the painting although he worked on it for many years.
Nobody knows for sure what the woman’s name was. Her first name may have been Lisa. In English, the painting is called the Mona Lisa.
In the portrait, only the top half of Mona Lisa’s body is shown. Behind her is a landscape. Mona Lisa’s black dress is very simple. And she does not wear expensive jewellery (珠宝). Her hands are crossed and rest one on top of the other. They are very graceful with soft, long fingers. But it is the expression on her face that draws people to her. Her lips are pressed together in a calm half-smile. She looks as if she is keeping a secret. Her eyes are full of mystery, too. They appear to look out at something only she can see.
The Mona Lisa is probably the most famous painting in the world. Why No one can really answer that question. When Leonardo was finished, he decided to keep it. In fact, he kept it with him, wherever he went, for the rest of his life.
The Mona Lisa is in the Louvre, a famous museum in Paris where crowds come every day to see her.

A. The reason was a secret. B. Because he needed money.
C. Because the woman was beautiful. D. Because the businessman was his friend.

A. Her lips. B. Her expression.
C. Her long fingers. D. Her secret identity (身份).

C. He showed no interest in it. D. He thought it was just so so.
( )38. What’s the story mainly about
A. Who was Mona Lisa. B. What Mona Lisa was like.
C. How Leonardo drew Mona Lisa. D. Why Leonardo drew Mona Lisa.

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” the famous German philosopher Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets (预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired (解雇) over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught Art or Music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like Science, Maths and History. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is beneficial (有益的) in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development programme. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.
( )39. Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ______.
A. students in the US weren’t interested in music
B. they were too difficult to learn
C. there weren’t enough music teachers in the US
D. the schools wanted to control budgets
( )40. In Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word “them” refer to
A. Public schools. B. Fired teachers.
C. Parents in Chicago. D. Students in Chicago.
( )41. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.
B. Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.
C. Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.
D. Playing the piano needs people to see music notes.
( )42. What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage
A. Music is as simple as it looks.
B. Music classes should be cut in some schools.
C. Music is a big part of our lives.
D. Music isn’t a very important life skill for us.

People usually use a magnifying glass (放大镜) to make things look larger when they see through it. Sometimes people also use it to focus (使集中) light to start fire. However, one artist named Michael Papadakis has found a new way to use the tool — he controls the sunlight to burn amazing artworks onto wooden boards with a magnifying glass.
Michael used to create art with painting and drawing supplies just like most artists. He got the idea to use the magnifying glass as a new tool for his art creation on a trip along the Silk Road from Asia to Europe 5 years ago. “The moment I saw the sun shining through the window onto the magnifying glass which was on my Chinese friend’s table, I thought to myself that I could probably draw with that.”
So the young artist started experimenting (实验) with sun painting instead of old fashioned painting. Luckily, Michael’s hometown of Golden in Colorado in the US gets around 300 days of sun a year, so he has got a lot of practice for the past 5 years and it really works. From natural landscapes and animal pictures to romantic and heartwarming scenes, there’s nothing this creative artist can’t do as long as it’s sunny and he has his special made magnifying glass in his hands. A piece of his artwork usually takes from one to thirty hours depending on the size and detail of the image.
According to the artist, he always takes some measures to protect himself such as covering his eyes with welding (焊接的) glasses. He thinks what makes his art special is that the process is just as interesting as the end result. “I’m also a filmmaker and I realize that this is a ‘performance art’ and people have to see it to understand it and truly enjoy it.”
Michael Papadakis

After the show, someone from a record company asked Aaron to make an album. Of course, Aaron said yes!
Since that day, Aaron has made many popular songs. His songs include Crush on You and I'm Gonna Miss You Forever.

But I met few young people there. It’s known to all that classical music has a lasting value and is recognized to be the art treasure.
As a Music teacher, I think it is well worth listening to. I hope more and more young people can learn to enjoy the classical music and find the charm of it and like listening to it.

The painter Craigie Aitchison was born in Edinburgh in 1926. He came to London intending (打算) to study law, but went to art school instead. There he found the traditional drawing classes difficult, but still kept on painting.
In his late twenties he was given money by the Italian government to study art in Italy. It was his first visit to Italy. He toured the country and became interested in the works by early Italian artists, especially Piero della Francesca. Italy remained close to
his heart and he put what he learned into his own works.
Unlike some artists, Craigie never did drawings before he started a painting, as he felt that if he did, he might get bored and not do the painting afterwards. Instead, Craigie changed his paintings many times before they were finished. This explained why his favourite models were people who didn’t ask to see their pictures while he was painting them. “If I feel they’re worried and want to look at the painting, I can’t do it.”

The Woodstock Festival was a three-day pop and rock concert that turned out to be the most popular music event in history.
Four young men organized the festival. The original ( 最 初 的) idea was to have a concert that would raise enough money to build a recording studio for young musicians at Woodstock, New York.
At first many things went wrong. People didn’t want any hippies (嬉皮士) coming to the original location. About 2 months before the concert a new site had to be found.
Luckily, the organizers found a 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York, where the concert could take place.
The organizers expected about 50,000 people, but as the date came nearer it became clear that far more people wanted to be at the event. A few days before the festival began hundreds of thousands of pop and rock fans were on their way to Woodstock. There were not enough gates where tickets were checked and fans made holes in the fences, so lots of people just walked in. About 300,000 to 500,000 people were at the
concert.
The event caused a giant traffic jam. Thousands of fans simply left their cars on roads and highways and walked to the site.
On Friday, August 15, 1969 the festival officially started. Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie and other folk artists performed. On Saturday Santana, Janis Joplin, the Who and others starred on stage.
Most people started leaving on Sunday. When Jimi Hendrix was the last musician on the stage only about 25,000 fans were still present.
Anyway, the Woodstock Festival was a big success. But the organizers had to be faced with a debt of over a million dollars.

A. To raise money.
B. To make a record.
C. To find young musicians.
D. To provide a place for amusement.
( )42. Why wasn’t the festival held at the original place
A. Because another better place was found.
B. Because the original place was too small.
C. Because hippies weren’t welcomed there.
D. Because the local people didn’t like rock music.
( )43. The number of the people who came to the festival _____.
A. was a big surprise B. was about 50,000
C. was smaller than expected D. was more than 500,000
( )44. What does the underlined word “debt” in the last paragraph mean in

After fidget spinners, rock painting has become the latest craze ( 狂 热) in the UK. Adults as well as children paint stones with a design and leave them in places to be found by others such as parks or tourist spots. As for finders, they can either keep the rocks or move them to somewhere else and share their finds on social media through which we can see people set up groups in towns and cities to promote the craze.
How the craze started
The Kindness Rocks Project, which encourages people to leave rocks painted with inspiring messages along the path of life, was credited with ( 归 功 于) beginning the movement. Since then, the rock painting craze has grown from the US and made its way to the UK thanks to social media.
What makes it fun
It is fun to make and hide the rocks. It is also great to go find them. Sharing pictures online of rocks you’ve made or found as well as clues about they’re hidden makes it a social project. How to get involved (参与)
All you need is a few rocks, paints or marker pens and a little imagination. Paint a design or write something positive on the rock, then hide them somewhere for people to find. Search the Internet and find a local rock painting group. You can include the
group or hashtag (话题标签) of the group so people can share where they found your rocks.
What designs you can paint

For twelve children aged between ten and fifteen, Saturdays are spent learning the art of cooking. Their weekly lessons in small classes are so popular that there is a waiting list of 30 children who want to do the course. Parents pay 280 for the course where their children can have fun and learn how to make good food.
Class member Bill, aged ten, says, “I love my mum’s cooking and now I can do it better than her. The teachers always make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we’ve made.”
Flora is twelve, and she says, “I did a meal for ten friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mum suggested I take up a hobby, instead of doing nothing on weekends. I was happy staying at home, so I wasn’t too interested in it at first. I’m really glad I decided to come, though.”
Their teacher, Philippe, says, “The students are great. They pay attention and remember things better than adults, although the kitchen isn’t always as tidy when they’re cooking! Without music life would be a mistake
Music is my friend. I can either hear it on the radio or watch music videos on TV. Music plays an important role in my life. When I’m feeling sad, music cheers me up. While I’m lonely, it can be with me through the hard times. Whenever I’m free, I go
to concerts. The other day I happened to hear Water by Tan Dun. In the work, he makes over 50 sounds from water by controlling the speed of water flow.
That’s really amazing. I have been crazier about it since then. I’m sure I will not live without music in the future.
