Oliver:? Oliver。 Helen:? Hello, I’m Helen. You’re listening to Ask About Britain, the programme where we answer your questions about how British people live their lives. Oliver:? Helen:? Today’s question is focused on the UK’s education system. The question came through our website and it was an anonymous message.?? Oliver:? Let’s have a listen to the question now. I know there are differences between Chinese and British education system. So I'd like to know something about the education of British students.? Helen:? This is a big question as there are so many areas we could cover. Today we’ll try to give everyone an overview of the education system in the UK.? Oliver:? Helen:? First of all, let’s hear from Karen who has had first hand experience of the UK’s education system.? Well the first really serious exams children in the UK have to do is their GCSEs, and they’ll do those when they are 16. So they study for those for two years, and then they take those exams when they’re 16. After that, the next really serious exams are A-levels. A-levels are really important and they’re actually much much harder than GCSEs. But of course you do fewer of those.? Oliver:? Helen:? And they are GCSEs and A-levels.? Oliver:? Helen:? So how many subjects can you study for GCSEs and A-levels? GCSEs you do probably about eight different subjects, some people do more if they are really bright. But when it comes to A-levels, people will do three or four A-levels. Oliver:? ? Helen:? But if you are a bright student.? Oliver:? Helen:? Then you can do more subjects. A few super clever students have taken as many as 16 GCSEs.? Oliver:? ? Helen:? Because A-levels are much more difficult than GCSEs, they are harder to study. Oliver:? After that, if they do well, then they’ve got some serious decisions to make. Either they can just leave school and go off and work – if that’s what they want to do. Or they could choose to go to university, and at university, they would do their Bachelor’s degree. And after that, if they want to stay on at university they could do a Master’s degree, and if they really want to go further in education, they can do a PhD. Helen:? The most important decision in a student’s life is what to do after A-levels. Oliver:? Helen:? That’s right. The decision is whether to go off to work or to continue further education at university. Oliver:? ? Helen:? And the first degree that students take at university is called a Bachelor’s degree. Oliver:? Bachelor’s degree.?? Helen:? Once you’ve completed that you can go on to do a Master’s degree.
Oliver:? A Master’s degree. Helen:? And some people go even further and do a Ph.D.? Oliver:? 我知道Ph.D 是博士,but what does it stand for? Helen:? Okay, Ph.D stands for Doctor of Philosophy, and it’s the highest degree you can get at most universities.? Helen:?Sadly we're running out of time again. I hope you’ve found today’s introduction to the UK’s education system useful.? Oliver:? Thanks for listening. Helen:? Take care, see next time.
