The Bridge of Immortals, Huang Shan, Anhui

My 86-year-old Mom moved to live closer to us. My husband, Kevin, and I found a lovely apartment for her. The day after Mom moved in, she called me to complain about the food at the facility.
Kevin and I took Mom to a nice restaurant for Mother’s Day. On the way back to her place, Mom commented that the restaurant had their air conditioner turned up too high—she nearly froze to death.
I asked Kevin whether I was always complaining. He hesitated for a few seconds before speaking, but he stared out of the window. I realized that the family tradition of complaining had taken root in me as well. Kevin had never mentioned it. But it wasn’t his characteristic to shine a light on my faults. I decided to keep a better watch on my tongue. However, every time the phone rang and Mom’s voice was on the other end, I felt extremely nervous.
Mom seemed ungrateful. After whatever Kevin and I had done for her, all we heard was what she disliked. I talked about how Mom’s attitude annoyed me with my best friend Tory. With the words coming out from my lips, an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.
A few days later, I received a package from Tory. A bright orange journal with one capital word in gold on its cover: GRATITUDE.
The next morning, I opened the journal and wrote the date, then the things I was grateful for. Over the next few months, I continued to list blessings (幸事、福祉) each day. Looking for things to thank for led to a deeper in me.
Life didn’t suddenly become trouble-free, but a new awareness of the blessings around me changed all these in my life including my Mom. I couldn’t change her, but I could only love her.
24. Why did Kevin look away before answering his wife’s question

A. The author needed her husband to help her.
B. The author asked for an apology from Mum’s neighbors.
C. The author was to respect her mother’s lifestyle.

China has tried hard to protect its lovely giant pandas. The government has taken a three-pronged approach to improve the survival of the giant panda as a wild animal species.
Protecting the Giant Panda’s Habitat
With the population growing fast around giant pandas’ habitat in China, the forest was cut down by farmers. Giant pandas had to move up to higher mountains, which had fewer bamboos. To protect giant panda’s habitat, Chinese government has set 13 panda nature reserve areas in which farming fields have been left to grow back as forest. In them, conservation workers live and work to rescue sick or hungry pandas. In the meanwhile, they stop giant pandas from being hunted as well.
Carrying out Captive Breeding
Giant pandas only give birth to 1 or 2 babies at a time. However, the hard environment failed them to raise both. In the 1980s, much of the bamboo on the Qionglai Mountains died. The reducing population makes it difficult for females to have baby pandas.
In 1987, the Chengdu Panda Center was established for giant panda research. The original six starving giant pandas have given more than 150 baby pandas to birth since then! Unlike ordinary zoos or attractions, panda research centers focus on research and breeding (繁殖). There are several panda centers around Chengdu to produce young pandas, educate people to protect pandas, and to do research to help save this lovely species.
Making Strict Laws
Giant pandas had been hunted against law for a long period, and many more were killed for food and fur. China’s government established laws to protect giant pandas from hunting and smuggling (盗运).
According to the World Wildlife Fund’s research, in 2014, the wild giant panda population was 1,864! On September 5th, 2016, it was announced that giant pandas had been removed from the endangered list.
28. What do the underlined words a three-pronged approach in the first paragraph mean

C. A method better than the other(s). D. Three methods taken at the same time.
29. What is the main purpose for the government to set the 13 panda nature reserve areas
A. To make sure pandas have enough food to eat.
B. To look after the sick and hungry pandas well.
C. To help stop giant pandas from being hunted.
D. To attract more travelers to visit the centers.
30. What does the writer try to tell us in Paragraph 3
A. Pandas are unhealthy because of a lack of food.
B. Why the panda population gets smaller in nature.
C. Human should help pandas attend the young.
D. Pandas once can give birth to two babies at most.
31. What is special about panda research centers

A good night’s rest is very important to anyone who expects to get more energetic and creative tomorrow! Among those factors that can affect our sleep quality, the biggest one is the level of light we try to sleep with.
Sleeping with the lights on is harmful to the quality of our sleep. Any extra light while we’re trying to sleep leads to our brains not producing enough hormone (激素、荷尔蒙) to help us fall asleep. Without this hormone, we won’t feel tired or sleepy and our whole body and mind will continue working. The hormone level is naturally low during the day and starts rising in the early evening as the darkness falls. It keeps growing and reaches a peak (顶峰) at about 3—3:30 am. Our body can focus on healing and repairing itself and the brain during our sleep. With too much light pollution in our bedrooms, our body and brain will no longer recognize when it is night or day outside, which results in our body not feeling tired when we should go to sleep, but feeling sleepy when mornings come. The lack of sleeping hormone in the brain can easily damage our sleeping schedule. A heavily disturbed internal clock can harm our mental health as well as causing psychiatric diseases like depression (抑郁症). It can be extremely difficult to set our biological clock again!
If it is still important for us to have some light in the room, it has been shown that red, which is a long wavelength light, causes less problems compared with others. Better to have small lights not in the bedroom, but in the hallway or another room. Though still not as good for our sleep as a completely dark room, it is much better for our health.
Moreover, before going to bed, we had better turn off our TV set, our computer, and put away our phone. Because digital screens give out blue light, researches show that a wavelength of blue light has a harmful effect on healthy sleep quality.
The best way to teach children to sleep in the darkness is to start it when they are still newborn.
32. What does the underlined word “stick” mean in Paragraph 1
A. A long thin branch from a tree. B. A piece of wood used for walking.
C. The wrong idea or misunderstanding. D. Physical punishment or severe criticism.
33. Whom did the researchers mainly choose to carry out their experiments according to the text
A. Elementary students. B. Kindergarten students.
C. Middle school students. D. College students.
34. What is inferred from the passage
A. Punishment can benefit the troublemaking students.
B. Praise can result in better focus and attention greatly.
C. Praise may contribute to the students’ impractical pride.
D. Punishment can force the students to concentrate better.
35. What is the writer’s attitude towards criticism
A. Criticism is completely harmful to the children.
B. It is impossible to know whether criticism is good.
C. Used correctly, proper criticism is recommended.
D. Criticism can be only used outside the classrooms.

因此填to invent。
62. that 由it is…that… 因此填that。
63. dates date back to 追溯到;从……
66. the biggest 由Of them修饰,表示比较对象在三者以上,用最高级。因此填the biggest。
pay a visit to somebody or someplace拜访某人或参观、访问某地,固定搭配。
78.第8处,第六句:把the→a。have a good understanding/knowledge of …
as well as介词或连词,和、同、既……又;as well副词“也”

On hearing the news that you were injured in a car accident on the way home from school, we all felt very sorry. Are you getting better now What you need to do is have a good rest and follow the doctor’s advice in hospital. We believe that you are lucky and strong enough to get over quite soon. M: Sure, but it’s pretty far. You might want to take a taxi or a bus.
W: Oh, I’d rather walk. I need to lose weight anyway.
(Text 3)
W: Brad, I’ve got this list of Chinese names here. Could you help me pick one
M: So you are serious about having a Chinese name for your job in China
W: Yes, two of my friends in the team have already got theirs.
(Text 4)
M: I just had a strange dream. We were trying to cross a river filled with whales, and you were carrying the baby in your arms.
W: That sounds a lot like that program you were watching on TV before you went to bed.
(Text 5)
W: What was your most unforgettable experience traveling in Beijing
M: I’d say it was watching a Peking opera at the National Grand Theater. It was really astonishing.
W: I was expecting you’d say it was your time on the Great Wall or in the Forbidden City.
M: There were just too many people.
(Text 6)
W: Hi, I’m just calling to check where we’re meeting tonight. I’ve forgotten which restaurant we’re going to.
M: Always so–you’ve always had a bad memory.
W: Don’t say that, Paul.
M: OK, OK. We’re going to the Chinese restaurant. But make sure you go to the right one. It’s the one on Ocean Road, not the one on the corner of Temple Street and Wood Street.
W: Great. No problem. See you there.
(Text 7)
W: OK. Let’s start. It is a suggestion about printing a special list for our multimedia products. We want as many ideas as possible for increasing our market share.

M: OK. So, we need to work out the cost. I’ll deal with that.
W: Today is Wednesday. How soon can you prepare some figures By Friday

M: Hi, Lisa. I heard you had spent two weeks in France. How was your time there
W: It was much better than expected. You know, I’m allergic to some food. So I was afraid I wouldn’t have a good time there.
M: So how did you eat there
W: Well, in the first week, my parents and I rented an apartment with a kitchen in Paris. In this way, we could cook our own meals.
M: But wasn’t that too annoying You’d spend a lot of time cooking.
W: That was really a bit annoying. So we just cooked for two days. And on the following days of the week, we just ate outdoors. Luckily, most restaurants in France seemed very careful about food allergies. So I could easily choose food.
M: That’s really great. So where did you spend the second week
W: On a ship. The meals were great and the chef carefully checked everything I ate.
(Text 9)
W: Hello. George! I wanted to speak to you yesterday, but you weren’t at your usual place for lunch.

M: Well, I stayed at home and looked after a baby.
W: What You took care of a baby Whose baby
M: Oh, it was my sister’s baby. She wanted to go shopping in the morning. I stayed at home and did a lot of things.
W: Oh
M: Yes. I mended my radio, washed a shirt and some socks and cleaned out the drawers of my desk.
W: I don’t call that a holiday. Yesterday I wanted to ask you to a concert. The one at the Town Hall.
(Text 10)
M: My name is John Croft. For three years and six months, I worked as a taxi driver for Downtown Taxi in Vancouver. I drove my cab five days a week from 3:00 in the afternoon until around 12:00 at night. There were traffic jams every afternoon, but it didn’t bother me. Most passengers were nice enough, although I can’t remember most of them. I liked to show tourists our beautiful city. A lot of tourists from Asia visited Vancouver. In the evening, I took people out to restaurants, clubs and theatres. It was interesting to see people dressed in their best clothes for parties. The most interesting customer I had was a man dressed as a bird! I can still remember the scene clearly and I think I’ll never forget it. My cab was always clean and I always tried to be friendly. The trip to the airport was usually my biggest tip. I liked my job and made a comfortable living. However, as we know, it is really a tiring job. So I don’t drive a taxi anymore. Now I have lots of free time, but sometimes I miss meeting new people.
