Inversion
When I arrived, I saw there was a tall tree at the entrance to the village. In front of the tree sat a lady in red. I didn’t know who she was at first, partly because I was near-sighted. Only when I came near could I recognize that she was my mother. My brothers haven’t returned home in the past ten years, neither have I. We are all too busy with our work.
Of course I know this is only an excuse. Not until my father died did I make up my mind to return home and stay with my mother for some time. We three brothers gave our mother a call and promised to have a winter holiday with her. Once having made a promise, we should keep it.

部分倒装
部分倒装是指将谓语的一部分如助动词或情态倒装至主语之前。如果句中的谓语没有助动词或情态动词，则需添加助动词do, does或did，并将其置于主语之前。
partial inversion
助动词/情态动词+ 主语 + 动词
1) Only修饰的副词，介词短语或状语从句放在句首时，主句要进行部分倒装。
只有到了那个时候，他才知道知识的重要性。
Only then did he know the importance of knowledge.
只有我们自己才能拯救自己。
Only we ourselves can save ourselves.
2)句首为否定或半否定的词语，如never, hardly, scarcely, rarely, seldom, little, not until, by no mean, in no case, in/under no circumstances, in no way, on no condition, at no time等。
*他一点也不关心自己的安全．
He cared little about his own safety.
Little did he care about his own safety.
我很少去看电影．
I seldom go to the cinema.
Seldom do I go to the cinema.
我从来没有看过这样的表演．
I have never seen such a performance.
Never have I seen such a performance.
等到孩子睡着了，妈妈才离开房间．
The mother didn’t leave the room until the child fell asleep.
当Not until引出主从复合句，主句倒装，从句不倒装。
Not until the child fell asleep did the mother leave the room.
3)把副词so放在句首，表示前面所说的情况，也适合于另一人或物。肯定句用so，否定句用neither/nor，句式如下：So/ Neither(Nor)+be (have,助动词或情态动词）＋主语。
他喜欢读书，我也是．
He likes reading very much. So do I .
我从来没有去过华中师范大学，他也是．
I have never been to Central China Normal University, and neither/ nor has he.
他不但学习好，而且他还乐于帮同学们解决学习问题．
Not only does he do well in his lessons, but also he often helps others with their lessons.
注意：not only…but also… 连接两个并列分句时，第一个分句应使用部分倒装。
4). Not only…but also的倒装
不但你，我也喜欢在江边散步．
Not only you but also I am fond of taking a walk along the riverbank.
注意:
只有当Not only… but also连接两个分句时，
才在第一个分句用倒装结构。
如果置于句首的Not only… but also仅连接两个并列词语，不可用倒装结构。

An athlete who competed in Beijing Olympics talked about his experience in Beijing:
Before I went to China, 对北京我几乎一无所知. I felt nothing about it. After I arrived, most of my time was spent on training and competing.我从未学过中文. As a result,I did not go out. 我也不敢跟北京人说话. My roommate said Sanlitun was great so the day before leaving, I went there. What a shock! 我很少见到这么多的人.What was more shocking, the salesgirls could speak so good English and the goods were so cheap. 我决不会浪费这次机会. In a few minutes, my wallet was empty but my hands were full. 只有到那个时候我才喜欢上了北京.
1. Little do I know about Beijing.
Hardly do I know about Beijing.
2. Never had I studied Chinese.
3. Seldom did I see so many people.
4. Neither dare I speak to Beijingers.
5. Never would I miss the chance.
By no means/ In no case would I miss the chance.
6. Not until then did I fall in love with Beijing.
