why的用法
why可以用作疑问副词,表示“为什么”,用来询问发生某一动作或存在某一情况的原因、理由,构成“Why + 一般疑问句”的特殊疑问句，回答时用because.
—Why do you like dogs？
你为什么喜欢狗。
—Because they are lovely.
因为它们很可爱。

why在一般现在时中的用法
基本结构：（1）Why+be+主语+其他？
（2）Why+do/does+主语+动词+其他？
例：（1）—Why are you scared？
你为什么害怕？
—Because there is a lion.
因为那里有一只狮子。
（2）—Why do they put cups on their heads？
他们为什么把杯子放在他们的头上？
—Because they think it is funny.
因为他们认为这很滑稽。

基本结构：（1）Why+was/were+主语+其他？
（2）Why+did+主语+动词原形+其他？
（1）—Why were you scared？

他们为什么把杯子放在他们的头上？
—Because they thought it was funny.

基本结构：Why+be+主语+V-ing+其他？
例：（1）—Why are you laughing？
你为什么笑？
—Because I am happy.
因为我很高兴。
（2）—Why is he crying？
他为什么哭？
—Because he is sad.
因为他伤心。

解析：由yesterday可知，本题要使用一般过去时。根据be动词的用法：单数is，复数都用are. we我们，是复数，are的过去式是were.故答案为were。
