Once, Louis the Twelfth, the King of France, happened to walk into the kitchen of his palace. There he found a small boy busy at work and singing happily.
The boy had bright eyes, and a happy, sunny face, and his looks and manners pleased the king. With a smile Louis asked him his name. He replied that his name was Simon. In answer to further questions, the king learnt that the boy was an orphan; both his father and mother were dead.
“Are you satisfied with this kind of work?” the king asked, pointing at the bowls which the boy was washing. “Are you willing to spend your time in the kitchen when so many of the others work upstairs?”
“Why not?” answered the boy, with a twinkle in his eye. “I am doing as well as the best of them. The king himself can do no better.”
“Indeed!” said the king, no little surprised at the boy's words. “How do you know that?”
“Well, sir, the king lives, and so do I. I am content (满足的) with my life. Can the king say that he is content with his life?”
Louis walked away; his mind full of strange, sad thoughts. No one knew better than he did that kings seldom feel content.
The next day, much to Simon's surprise, he was called before the king. He was still more surprised when he found that his visitor of the day before was Louis himself. The king talked with him about many things, and found him to be a very quick and clever boy.
After that Simon was made to serve the king directly. Step by step, he rose from one important task to another, until he became one of the best soldiers of that time. He is known in history as General La Roche, and considered as one of the greatest men of France.
If Simon had not, early in life, learnt to be content with his life, he might never have been given those chances. The king did not want people who were always unhappy because they did not have as good a place as some others. You cannot too soon learn that only those who are content are happy.

“Humans can develop certain abilities we aren’t born with by practicing animals movements, the traditional Chinese Wushu(武术) lovers believed in the past -and still do today.
Chinese Five-Animal Exercises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first complete set of qigong(气功)exercises following the movements of animals: monkeys, deer (鹿), birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1, 800 years ago.
The Five-Animal Exercises are well- designed to help blood circulation(循环),and let the energy go smoothly in the body in order to improve the health.
“The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the waist(腰).The bird movements can help keep our knees healthy and the monkey movements can be good for the heart,” said Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor(继承人) of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well. You may find it hard to focus(集中注意力). Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly... Little by little, you'll feel more and more harmonious with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it's fun to practice and good for health, Five Animal Exercises are becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.

Life is competitive—some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are winners and losers, and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in-between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.
Being a good winner.
No one likes a “show off”.
No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team.
No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good.
To be a good winner you need to:
◆Be modest(谦虚的).
◆Thank those who helped you for their efforts.
◆Keep trying to improve yourselves.
◆Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.
Being an even better loser.
Of course it's disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name-calling and going on about things being “unfair” won't change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either.
To be an even better loser you need to:
◆Behave politely, nicely and kindly.
◆Congratulate the other team.
◆Keep any negative(消极的)thoughts to yourself—at least until you are away from the game.
It's OK to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don't do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.
45.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.We are either losers or winners.
B.We can do nothing about winning and losing.
C.We should face winning and losing properly.
D.We are always competing with others not ourselves.
46.What should a better loser do when losing
A.Let out his anger to his parents at once.
B.Express his negative feelings in the game.
C.Try harder to improve himself in the next game.
D.Behave badly to his team members or competitors.
47.Which one is Not proper if we succeed
A.Going on improving ourselves.
B.Telling our team members to aim higher.
C.Thanking our team members for their efforts.
D.Putting down others to make ourselves look good.
48.Who is probably a bad sport
A.Jim encourages his teammates after their team loses.
B.Tom keeps saying the game is unfair when he loses.
C.Anna thanks her coach for what he has done though she fails.
D.Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails.
50.What is the passage written for
A.Telling us what we can learn from losing.
B.Offering advice on what we can do to win.
C.Encouraging us to become a winner instead of a loser.
D.Giving advice on how to deal with winning and losing.
