Write a winning story!
You could win £1,000 in this year's Fiction(小说) Prize and have your story printed in Keep Writing. Ten other lucky people will win £100.
Once again, we need people who can write good stories. The judges who include Mary Littlejohn, the novelist, Michael Brown, the television reporter, and Susan Hitchins, one of Keep Writing's editors, are looking for interesting and original stories. Detective fiction was really popular last year, although the competition winner produced a love story. You can write about whatever you want but you should make the beginning interesting and the ending a surprise.
Your story must be your own work, between 2,000 and 2,500 words and typed, double-spaced, on one side only of each piece of paper.
Even if you're in danger of missing the closing date, we are unable to accept stories by email. You must include the application form with your story.
Unfortunately, your story cannot be returned, nor can we discuss our decisions.
Your fee of £5 will go to the Writers' Association. Send your story with the application form and your story to:

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.
24.The underlined word “cure” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.
A.a medical treatment B.a kind of vitamin
C.a kind of germ D.a kind of rice
25.If a person doesn’t get enough vitamins in his diet, he’d better ______.
A.eat more rice B.eat more meat
C.eat some chicken D.eat vitamin pills
26.We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.beri-beri was caused by chickens
B.the Javanese didn’t like vitamins
C.Christian Eijkman’s experiment was successful
D.the Javanese’s disease was caused by a kind of germ
27.Why did Christian Eijkman raise some chicken
A.To eat them. B.To give the Javanese a surprise.
C.To carry out his experiments. D.To make money by selling them.

Some people have tried locking their mobiles away in order to fight against their smartphone addiction(上瘾),while others have used some tricks such as making their screens black and white. But the cure to smartphone addiction may lie in an app that rewards users for leaving their phone alone.
The new app, called Hold, can detect(检测)when users have used their smartphones and gives them points dependent on how long they avoid the temptation(引诱)of looking at Facebook, for example. Upon downloading it for free, users receive 10 points for every 20 minutes spent without touching their phone between 7:00 and 23:00 every day of the week, with a user email address needed to receive the rewards. To get half price Vue cinema tickets, users need 60 points. For two free coffees from Cafe Nero, users need 300 points, and a glass of juice for 90 points. For E5 Amazon vouchers(代金券)users need to have collected 1,000 points.
Hold was created by Maths Mathisen, Florian Winder and Vinoth Vinaya-three Norwegians. They noticed that young people's dependence on their smartphones was getting out of hand while studying at Copenhagen Business School. Rather than punish their users, the three found that the best way to get them to put their phones down was to use tricks that got them interested in the first place. Lots of studies in recent years point to the worrying rise of smartphone addiction and the effects of smartphones on education. Researchers from the London School of Economics found that students who did not use their phones at school found their grades improved by 6.5 percent.
Cafe Nero, Amazon and Planet Organic will also offer discounts on the Hold marketplace. Students will also be offered the choice to use points to buy school books which are then donated to some schools.
28.According to the text, the student users of Hold ______.
A.need to pay a certain amount of money
B.can improve their grades by6.5%
C.need to register(注册)with their email address
D.receive 10 points for a 10-minute break
29.What does the second paragraph talk about
A.How the Hold app works B.What we need to use the Hold.
C.The development of the Hold. D.The tests the Hold app needs to pass.
30.To get one half price Vue cinema ticket and two free coffees from Cafe Nero,a user needs to have ______ minutes worth of points.
A.120 B.180 C.360 D.720
31.The purpose of this text is to ______.
A.explain why the Hold app is popular among users
B.introduce a useful app that can cure phone addiction
C.draw public attention to phone addiction among students
D.compare some interesting apps that are popular with students

Despite earning more than ﹩100,000 in household income, many people feel that they are living month to month and that sudden medical emergency could easily move them from the upper middle class to low income earners. This feeling, despite these levels of income, seems a bit unbelievable.Let's take a deeper look at the phenomenon(现象).
Even in today's tough economy, for those with six-figure incomes credit(贷款)is easy to come by.Credit companies may have cut back offerings to those in lower income brackets (等级) due to the recent credit reforms, but there seems to be little or no effect on high income earners.Their being able to get credit without difficulty gives them a false sense of security that makes them spend way more than their incomes can afford. That's why they are in credit card debt faster than average.
Some higher income professionals feel like they are making lots of money now,and believe that they will continue to make big money. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now.Hand in hand with that, many of them probably believe that they are making more money than they really are - or said another way,the money they make will go farther than it really does.
Meanwhile, many young professionals who are earning good incomes don't come from particularly advantaged backgrounds, and their reference point may be that they are making twice (or more) than their parents were---so they spend like that as well. They don't take account of the effect of inflation (通货膨胀),which means that the cost of living is much higher than that in their parents' generation.Further, the more you earn, the more you pay in tax.Rather than focusing on after-tax incomes, many high income earners only look at the top line figures.A ﹩100,000 income before tax is only about ﹩70,000 after tax.
32.What is the first paragraph intended to
A.Introduce the understanding of high income.
B.Confirm a strange phenomenon.
C.Stress the inconvenience brought by illnesses.
D.Lead to the topic of feeling poor.
33.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.Lack of real security. B.Easy access to credit.
C.The successful credit reforms D.Their advantaged backgrounds.
34.Why do some professionals spend beyond their income
A.Their money goes farther than it really does.
B.They fail to make more money like before.
C.They misunderstand their incomes.
D.They are often in credit card debt.
35.What does the author intend to remind young professionals about in the end
A.They should work harder to pay more taxes.
B.They need to turn to their parents for help.
C.They should keep their mind when faced with poverty.
D.They need to look at the present rather than look back.

It took place in a teacher's family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour's cat jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. The mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son's nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben's mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

C
Upon downloading it for free, users receive 10 points for every 20 minutes spent without touching their phone between 7: 00 and 23: 00 every day of the week, with a user email address needed to receive the rewards.(免费下载后,用户每周7点至23点每20分钟不碰手机就会得到10分,并需要一个用户电子邮件地址来获得奖励。)
The new app, called Hold, can detect(检测)when users have used their smart phones and gives them points dependent on how long they avoid the temptation(引诱)of looking at Facebook,(这款新式APP可以检测用户使用手机的时间,然后根据用户不用手机的时长赋予用户点数)可知本段落主要讲述Hold的操作原理。故选A。
根据文章中 users receive 10 points for every 20 minutes spent without touching their phone(用户每脱离手机20分钟奖励10个点). To get half price Vue cinema tickets, users need 60 points. For two free coffees from Café Nero, users need 300 points,…(要想得到半价票需要60个点;两杯免费咖啡需要300个点…).
But the cure to smartphone addiction may lie in an app that rewards users for leaving their phone alone(至于手机成瘾的方法可能要靠一款奖励用户不用手机的APP,Hold)可知本文的目的是介绍一个有用的应用程序,可以治疗手机成瘾。
Despite earning more than $ l00,000 in household income, many people feel that they are living month to month and that sudden medical emergency could easily move them from the upper middle class to low-income earners. This feeling, despite these levels of income, seems a bit unbelievable.Let's take a deeper look at the phenomenon.(尽管家庭收入超过十万美元,但许多人觉得他们是在按月生活,突然的医疗紧急情况很容易使他们从中上层阶级变成低收入者。这种感觉,尽管有这些收入水平,似乎有点不可思议。让我们更深入地了解一下这一现象)"可推知,第一段的目的是引出高收入人群仍然感觉自己贫穷的话题。故选D。
33.段落大意题。根据第二段"Even in today's tough economy, for those with six- figure incomes credit is easy to come by.Credit companies may have cut back offerings to those in lower income brackets due to the recent credit reforms, but there seems to be little or no effect on high income earners.Their being able to get credit without difficulty gives them a false sense of security that makes them spend way more than their incomes can afford. That's why they are in credit card debt faster than average.(即使在今天艰难的经济中,对于那些拥有六位数收入的人来说,信贷是很容易得到的。由于最近的信贷改革,信贷公司可能已经减少了对低收入阶层的提供,但对高收入者似乎没有什么影响。他们能够毫无困难地获得信贷,给了他们一种虚假的安全感,使他们的消费远远超过他们的收入所能承受的范围。这就是为什么他们的信用卡债务比一般人快)"可知,第二段的主要内容是信贷容易获得。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段"Some higher income professionals feel like they are making lots of money now,and believe that they will continue to make big money. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now.Hand in hand with that, many of them probably believe that they are making more money than they really are- or said another way,the money they make will go farther than it rally does.(一些高收入的专业人士觉得他们现在赚了很多钱,并相信他们会继续赚大钱。这可能会减少他们现在需要小心理财的感觉。与此相伴的是,他们中的许多人可能认为他们赚的钱比实际情况要多或者换句话说,他们赚的钱比实际情况更经花)"可知,有些专业人士花钱超出收入是因为他们误解了自己的收入。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中"Meanwhile, many young professionals who are earning good incomes don't come from particularly advantaged backgrounds, and their reference point may be that they are making twice (or more) than their parents were一so they spend like that as well. They don't take account of the effect of inflation, which means that the cost of living is much higher than that in their parents' generation. Further, the more you earn, the more you pay in tax. Rather than focusing on after-tax incomes, many high-income earners only look at the top line figures.(与此同时,许多收入不错的年轻专业人士并不是来自特别优越的背景,他们的参考点可能是他们的收入是他们父母的两倍(或更多),所以他们的花费也一样。
41-45 BDDAC 46-50 BCBAA 51-55 CCBCD

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
The mother said, "This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!" Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. "This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase." She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself with more chocolate for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as he was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
Paragraph 2:
Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy's bad attitude disappeared. His palm and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. "I'm sorry I lied to you, Mum. Please take back the chocolate." Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn't hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolate. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling, "Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear."
