Dear Peter:
How are you I’d like to tell you something
about my best friend-----Chen Rong. Summer holidays are coming, he is leaving for the USA
to be an exchange student. He’s flying there next month and he’s arriving at 12:30 on June 23rd. His uncle is meeting him. He is a little nervous and worried, because he is afraid to have much difficulty communicating with Americans.
Could you help him
Yours,
Xue Linyuan
Dear Linyuan:
I’m glad to hear that your best friend is coming to the USA. Please tell him not to be worried. Let me give him some advice.
Different countries have different cultures. First, it’s important to know about the differences of using language. American English is different from British English in pronunciation, spellings and expressions. For example, there are some words about animals that are used differently. In our western countries, dogs are considered honest and good friends of humans. In Chinese people’s eyes, dragon can bring them luck. While in English, dragon is a ferocious animal. When people say a woman is a dragon, which means she is easy to get angry and hard to get along with. And don’t forget to tell him to pay attention to body language.
Second, Americans tend to holdout their hands and look directly into his/her eyes and then smile when greeting . Third, our eating habits is unlike yours, everyone has their own plate of food and people are not supposed to make noise. Besides, it is a good idea to bring a small present when he goes to a birthday party. Flowers are always nice, or he may bring a bottle of wine.
When we travel to other countries, we should follow their customs, just as the saying goes "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." I hope the advice will be helpful to him.
Best wishes. Yours,
Peter
