Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world.___________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[范文借鉴]
Environmental_problems_are_becoming_more_and_more_serious_all_over_the_world. For example, poisonous gas given off by factories and cars has made the air unhealthy for people to breathe. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly thrown. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence.
The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations. As students we can also do something for our environment. For example, turn the lights off when no one is in the classroom.
We believe that doing these small things will improve our environment and help make our world a better place to live in. (We hope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better).

Ⅳ.阅读理解
A
Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the beach—in the hot sun, building sandcastles, burying Dad in the sand.
Now the coast has a strangely pleasant and relaxing attraction. I look forward to a windy clifftop(峭壁顶部)walk or a rainy day rockpicking just as much as those rare moments when I get to a short sleep in the sun. But there's nothing more pleasurable than turning up at a beach to find it deserted.
These are my favorite secret beaches—ones either not well known or take a bit of effort to get to. Most of those listed scored highly in the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide 2009; the others are too secret even for them.
Sennen Cove is just a mile northeast of Land's End, the westernmost point of mainland England. It's a beautiful spot, with white sands, deep green sea and amazing sunsets over the Isles(群岛)of Scilly, 28 miles away.
The west-facing beach is popular with surfers, with bigger waves and winds often found at the Gwenver end. There's a beach restaurant with good views of the bay and the sunsets.
The smallest of the Isles of Scilly, Bryher is a mile long, half a mile wide—and a natural wilderness of unbelievable scenery. Walk along the narrow sandy roads to the eastern seaboard and you come to two quiet beaches.
Green Bay has views over to the palm(棕榈)trees of Tresco's Abbey Gardens, and a little further south is Rushy Bay, a beautiful beach facing the deserted island of Samson.
On Bryher, farm shops sell locally grown produce, and they trust you to leave the money in the pot. It's that kind of place.

Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain's most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe—the business tribe.
You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn't wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.
This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.
“Ties offer a point of indifference,” says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers. “They give a chance to say something about their own personality.”
So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to be rare amongst the new bread of entrepreneurs(企业家) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people—but not the people wearing ties.
Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the Western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Kennedy never wore a hat in fact his nickname was“hatless Jack”. Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to, either. Hats simply vanished across the Western world. Perhaps“tieless Tony”(UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as “hatless Jack”.

8. The underlined word “vanished” in the last paragraph may mean________.

A
Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.
Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the town's newspaper—The Beldon Post:
FIRE AT SEABREEZE
Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors: “Please don't smoke cigarettes in bed.”This was Beldon's first hotel fire for five years.
The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:
ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE
Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said,“An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp.”We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.
What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel last August; that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes, we know that firemen went to the hotel.
Now what do you think of the rest of the“news”?

School Report went international when the BBC News project's first global radio bulletin was made at Randfontein High School near Johannesburg in South Africa.
Students from the school were joined by pupils from two other schools—Parktown High School for Girls and Impala Crescent Primary School—and went live at 14:00 local time on 3 February 2009. BBC Producers Ros Smith and Kate Riley were invited by the Commonwealth of Learning to work with the schools.
After deciding on their news items, the students gathered vox_pops from fellow students and their teachers.
Tiffany said,“We had a chance to talk to other kids from other schools. This was great because Randfontein is situated in the sticks, away from civilisation.” Nomakhosi added, “Interviewing our teachers and classmates was interesting and I felt important while doing this.”
Chene commented, “My voice sounded like a whole new person. It takes some time getting used to hearing your own voice.”
Pupils, known as learners in South Africa, then worked with School Report producer Ros Smith to edit their clips while others started script-writing(写广播稿).
With the 1,400 deadline fast approaching, and the audio edited, the new School Reporters recorded their scripts so they could be added to the bulletin.
Ros Smith was really impressed with the students' work. She said, “The stories they chose were an excellent mix. The final bulletin sounds really good, and they finished with 10 minutes to spare before the deadline.”
On 26 March students from the three schools will take part in the School Report News Day with support from the Open Learning Systems Education Trust, and it was a big success.

One day, my friend and I were walking along the street when we saw a car knocked a girl off her bicycle. We rushed to help her. We found her leg bleeding badly. I had learned some knowledge about first aid before, so I left her where she was. Quickly I found a clean handkerchief and pressed it onto the bleeding point and held it there.
Meanwhile my friend went to telephone the First Aid Center. We were staying with the girl until the doctors and her parents came.
Soon the girl came round. How grateful her parents to us!
