Rembrandt was an extraordinary Dutch painter. He was most well-known for his brushwork and the way in which he connected with the human soul. His life, however, was not happy.
He was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father wanted him to have a real, learned profession but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden after becoming bored. He began studying art under a local teacher but soon left and studied in Amsterdam where he mastered all his lessons in six months!
At the age of 22, he moved back to Leiden and began to get his own students. One of his students was the famous artist Gerrit Dou. In 1631 he returned to Amsterdam where he became the most popular portrait painter in Holland. Rembrandt met Saskia and married her in 1634. She was a cousin of a very successful art dealer and she helped him to meet wealthy people who commissioned(委任制作)many paintings from him. He used her as a model in many of his paintings.
Rembrandt's private life, however, was very unfortunate. He had four children with Saskia but only one, Titus, survived. Saskia died in 1642 at the age of only 30. In 1649, his housekeeper became his second wife and was also a model for many of his paintings. Even though Rembrandt was very successful as an artist, art dealer and teacher, he lived in a careless way and had to declare bankruptcy(破产)in 1656. He even had to sell his whole art collection and his house to pay off his debts.
His unfortunate life, however, didn't affect his art. He painted many great paintings during that time. His new love, Hendrickje, died in 1663 and his 27-year-old son, Titus, died in 1668. Eleven months later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam. He produced more than 600 paintings and over 2,000 drawings!

The greatest artistic creative geniuses I've ever seen, have been those who can turn garbage into art. Not just gluing together junk, but really making waste into something unique, cool, and well, something you'd put into your home for instance. There's something to be said about recycling of those items we commonly throw away.
The ability to take trash and garbage and turn it into art, or something intriguing that is fascinating to look at is a skill all of its own. I have often said that the tree geniuses of our time, that is to say the creative genius artists of our era are those who can do this, create art that can command a high price tag from junk. Over the years while traveling through the United States I had stopped into museums in many parts of the country.
Some of the best art I've ever seen in my life has come from garbage, trash, or junk that has been reworked and recycled into something spectacular. Best of all the artists don't spend much on material costs, therefore it is mostly profitable. In fact they are using their minds to do a lot with very little. Just think if we all used our minds to do this, how little we might actually throw away, and how more efficiently we could run our factories, production, and even households.
After all, anything that is not used is waste, and it is thrown away. It ends up in a landfill, or a dump somewhere, and eventually it decays in the soil, causing perhaps ground water pollution. However, if we can rework these items for a couple of more rounds, and waste less, then we are providing efficiency for our civilization, and that's a good thing. Any artist who can do this is not only one caring the environment, but he is also one with humanity, and using his brain power and creative genius to make us all better.

I Believe I Can Fly
I Believe I Can Fly is a nice song which tells us that
[范文借鉴]
I Believe I Can Fly
I Believe I Can Fly is a nice song which tells us that confidence is very important. Whenever we have confidence, we believe in ourselves. Dreams and confidence are what keep us going on in face of difficulties.
Three years ago when I became a senior student, I was not used to the high-speed life so that I began to lose my confidence. As a result I did quite badly in exams. However, my teachers and friends kept cheering me up and I was greatly convinced that if I just spread my wings, I could still fly. So today I am sitting here, believing I will surely achieve my dream only if I try.
Never give up whenever we meet with any difficulties. Remember confidence is the key to achieving success.

Obese Youngsters Have Obese Friends
Obese young people are more likely to have overweight friends—at least that is what researchers at the Institute of Prevention Research at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California(USC)claim after carrying out their study.
The team of researchers, led by Thomas Valente, Ph. D., Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, was stunned to discover how strong was the connection between obesity and social networks, despite the fact that such link was somewhat anticipated, being found by earlier studies. But in the current study researchers took advantage of more sophisticated statistical modeling methods.
“The findings certainly raise health concerns because when kids start associating only with others who have a similar weight status it can reinforce the negative behaviors that cause obesity,”says Valente.
The study involved the analysis of 617 students aged between 11 and 13, all of them living in the Los Angeles area. Besides noticing that most obese students had overweight friends, researchers noticed that obese girls named more friends, but were less likely to be named friends compared to girls with normal body weight index.
According to Valente, in most cases researchers pay more attention to health problems linked with obesity, but they should also understand and focus on the social cost for overweight young people. “The social outcomes of obesity should also be taken into consideration by parents and teachers,”says the researcher.
Valente mentioned that there is a need of more longitudinal researches for more recommendations on the link between obesity and social status in a social environment. The research was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Findings from a new study were presented at a recent meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society. Researchers in the United States studied 100,000 women during an eight year period. All of the women were fifty years of age or older.
The women were asked questions that measured their beliefs or ideas about the future. The researchers attempted to identify each woman's personality eight years after gathering the information.
The study found that hopeful individuals were fourteen percent less likely than other women to have died of any cause. The hopeful women were also thirty percent less likely to have died of heart disease after eight years.
Hilary Tindle from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania was the lead author of the report. She said the study confirmed earlier research that linked optimistic feelings to longer life.
The researchers also gathered information about people's education, financial earnings, physical activity and use of alcohol or cigarettes. Independent of those things, the findings still showed that optimists had less chance of dying during the eight-year period.
Some women who answered the questions were found to be hostile(敌对的), or highly untrusting of others. These women were sixteen percent more likely to die than the others. They also were twenty-three percent more likely to die of cancer. The study also found that women who were not optimistic were more likely to smoke and have high blood pressure or diabetes(糖尿病). They were also more likely not to exercise.
Professor Tindle says the study did not confirm whether optimism leads to healthier choices, or if it actually affects a person's physical health. She also says the study does not prove that negative emotions or distrust lead to bad health effects and shorter life. Yet there does appear to be a link that calls for more research.

[范文借鉴]
Hello_everyone,
With the changing climate and severe pollution, I strongly believe we should all be living low-carbon lives today.
Living a low-carbon life is a good way to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. I shall do it in the following ways. At home, I shall only turn on the lights if necessary, take shorter powers and keep the refrigerator and air conditioners in the low-carbon mode to save energy. For transportation, the bus or bicycle will be my first choice. When shopping, I'll limit the use of plastic bags and wherever possible, I will separate my rubbish into non-recyclable and recyclable waste.
I am hoping that more and more schoolmates will join me in my effort.
Thanks.

(2012·三明普高联考)
It's true that quite a few most respected scientific authorities have confirmed that the world is becoming hotter and hotter. There's also strong evidence that humans are contributing to the warming. Countless recent reports have proved the same thing. For instance, a 2010 summary about the climate science by the Royal Society noted that: “The global warming over the last half-century has been caused mainly by human activity.”
You may not believe that humans could change the planet's climate, but the basic science is well understood. Each year, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere because of human activity. As has been known for years, these gases hold heat that would otherwise escape to space, wrapping the planet in an invisible(看不见的) blanket.
Of course, the earth's climate has always been changing due to “natural” factors such as volcanic eruption(熔化) or changes in solar, or cycles concerning the Earth's going around the sun. According to the scientific research, however, the warming observed by now matches the pattern of warming we would expect from a build-up of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere—not the warming we would expect from other possible causes.
Even if scientists did discover another reasonable explanation for the warming recorded so far, that would give birth to a difficult question. As Robert Henson puts it: “If some newly discovered factor is to blame for the climate change, then why aren't carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases producing the warming that basic physics tells us they should be?”
The only way to prove with 100% certainty that humans are responsible for global warming would be to run an experiment with two identical Earths—one with human influence and one without. That obviously isn't possible, and so most scientists are careful not to state human influence as an absolute certainty.
