Ⅰ. Analysis of the teaching material
Memory Corner is an expository passage. In it the three students talk about three ways about how to improve memory. They are image-memory, shorten-sentences memory and understanding-memory. The writers want to enable students to improve their memory and help students to explore the suitable ways for them and transfer the ways to life and study to make study more efficient and make life easier.
Ⅱ. Analysis of the students
The students are in grade 8. They have already learnt some key words of this passage. However, they maybe lack learning strategies and need some help to grasp the grist of the passage and how to find topic sentences in every article. On the other hand, they need more oral practice to improve language proficiency.
Ⅲ. Teaching objectives
Language competence
1. Understand and identify some key words and expressions of this passage. (E.g.: silly, method, spell, trouble…).
2. Understand how to find out the topic sentence of the articles.
Cultural awareness
Broaden students’ international horizon and get some ways to remember English words.

Help students to share learning enlightenment when communicating.
Help students to explore some ways which are suitable for themselves about memory.
Learning strategies
Learn from others by using some communicational strategies to get some ways and improve their memory.
Transfer the good ways they learned in the class to their life and study and improve their learning efficiency.

Understand the text and the structure through different learning strategies.
Help students to understand how the three students state ways clearly.

Ⅰ. Warming-up Play an English song-《Memory》and ask students if they know the name of the song. Show the four statements to check how much they know about memory. Judge True of False. Guess the name of the song. Judge the four statements True or False. Arouse their interest in the topic of the class. Enlighten what they have learned about the topic-memory. Distinguish the facts from known reserves.
Ⅱ. Pre-reading Play the tape of the introduction and ask students answer the two questions. Listen to the tape and answer the two questions: Q1: What do they do Q2: Why do they do so . Get the background of the passage. Cultivate students’ logical thinking ability by locating, identifying.
Ⅲ. Skimming Ask students to skim the whole passage and find out what the three writers talk about separately. Skim the text and fill in the chart. Henry To remember somethingPaulaMillie

Ⅳ. Intensive reading Play the tape of Henry’s article. Ask students to fill in the blanks and find out the topic sentences in the article. Play the tape of Paula’s article and Millie’s article and ask students to do the same as above. Listen to the tape and fill in the blanks Predict what mind, silly, method, spell, unless, trouble… means according to the article. Understand the structure of the article and find out the topic sentence. Then listen to the tape of Paula’s article and Millie’s article and do the same as above. Ask students to get an overview of the passage again by helping students sum up what the three ways are. Sum up the three ways by filling in the table. Help student be clearer about the fact of the passage. Sum up the three ways by students themselves to develop their thinking quality.
Show the whole passage again, then help students to understand the structure of the articles. Try their best to find out how the writers state their ways clearly. Help student be clearer about the structure of the articles. Pave ways for the following expression. For formation of effective learning strategies to the students and reference to the teacher.
Ⅴ. Extensive thinking 1. Ask students to think about their ways about how to improve memory. Present the three aspects in the mind map. 2. Show my suggestions a minute later. 3. Show the two students’ video clips. 1. Express themselves in one minute according to the three aspects in the mind map. And present their ways by giving examples. 2. Learn some ways from the teacher’s suggestions. 3. Learn some other ways form the two students. 1. Improve students’ critical thinking ability by expressing themselves. 2. Improve students’ creative and logical ability and their language competence through expressing. 3. Lead students to learn in use and improve their language competence.
Play the video 《Family》 and ask students to learn more than just remembering English words. Show some lyrics of the opening English song-《Memory》, lead students to keep active and positive. Get some moral education, not just remember English words. Learn to keep active and look on the bright side just like the lyrics say. Pave the way for homework. Improve students’ creative thinking ability by leading students to think beyond words. Help students transfer the personality they learned in the class to their life and study.
Ⅵ. Homework Whose way is used in the video《Family》 And what the way is If you can remember the way, please share your ways to keep good memory. If you can’t, please tell the reason and how you will improve your way. Lead students to learn in use and develop their critical thinking and improve their language competence.
