Step One: Warm up Think and guess: which things did people have in the US in the 1830s Think and discuss: What do you think about American life in the 1830s Guide the students to make a wise choice.Help the students to know some related background knowledge. 1. Step Two: Pre-reading 1. Look at the introduction and the title of the story on page 99. Then answer some questions.2. Guess something about a brief introduction of Mark Twain3. Look at the picture on page 99 and answer some simple questions 1. Guide the students to read introduction and the title of the story.2. Explain the brief introduction of the writer.3.Guide the students observe the picture more carefully. 1.To reinforce basic reading ability.2. Let the students get the details of the text while reading3.To cultivate the students’ ability to observe and to predict. 7
Step Three: Skimming Ask the students to skim the whole story and complete the table.Time:Place: Characters:Plot: Organize the students to work in groups to finish the table. To make them get familiar with the four elements of the story and train their ability of fast reading. 5
Step Four: While -reading Read the text part by part and then answer some questions.Read the text in details and analyze the dialogues between Tom and Ben. Divide the whole tale into two parts: 1-3p.4-11p.then read the 1st part to learn how to explain the background of the tale.Read 4-11 to find the dialogue among the characters. Let the students get the details of the text while reading.To make them get familiar with the details of the text and train their ability of analyzing. 20
Step Five: Post-reading Discussion: what do you think of Tom Sawyer Help them to think more than the tale. Train the students’ creation ability and cooperation ability as well as imagination 10
