8A Unit 4 Reading: Great Inventions
Analysis of the learning material:
This is a reading passage from the compulsory textbook for Grade 8 students, aiming at developing their core competences in English education, such as language ability, thinking quality, learning ability and cultural awareness.
Based on the topic of inventions, the passage with a clear structure is an introduction of the three most important inventions in history. It is an expository writing mainly introducing the importance of these three inventions. Students are encouraged to learn about the contribution and wisdom of previous scientists.
Analysis of the learners:
The learners are Grade 8 students who have the basic ability to understand the main idea and the detailed information of the passage. With the development of science and technology, inventions greatly change our way of life. It’s a good time for students to learn about them since many of them may have a dream of being scientists in the future. In this lesson, they will not only obtain language skills and reading strategy, but also learn about great inventions in Chinese history.
Learning objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students are expected to:
Language ability: Understand the main idea and detailed information of the three most important inventions in history.
Learning strategy: Find out the main idea by skimming and check the understanding of the detailed information by scanning.
Thinking quality: Think critically about the importance of inventions.

Teaching Aims Ss can develop their reading abilities of skimming and scanning. Ss can make use of important sentence patterns to learn the importance of inventions.

While-reading Step three: Skimming 3. Find out the main idea of the article. 5. Lead Ss to get the main idea from the title, the introduction, the sub-headings and the pictures of the article. To develop Ss’s reading abilities of skimming and scanning.
Step three: Scanning 4. Read the part of the wheel and answer the questions. 5. Read the parts of the telephone and the light bulb and fill in the blanks of the table. 6. Read the sentences and find out whether they are true or false. 4. Ask the questions about the wheel. 5. Show the table about the telephone and the light bulb. 6. Show the detailed information about the article.
Post-reading Step four: Great Chinese inventions 7. Review four great Chinese inventions. 8. Watch a video about new four great Chinese inventions. 9. Think about if Newton travels in modern Shenzhen, what he can do in a day. 7. Show the pictures of four great Chinese inventions. 8. Show a video about four great inventions in modern China. 9. Lead Ss to answer the question with the sentence patterns. To let Ss realize the importance of inventions and think critically about them.
Step five: Discussion 10. Think about whether there are any bad inventions and what we should do with them. 11. Understand the idea that every coin has two sides and the difference between good and evil lies in people. 10. Ask the questions and set three examples to explain them. 11.
