Unit 4 More practice: a pen giant
Background information: Student Analysis The students are in the second year of junior high school. After a year’s study at junior high school, they have a certain English reading ability. However, they still lack reading skills and abilities in summarizing or retelling the content of the article. Students in Grade 8 tend be very active in their thinking, and their ability to think independently is gradually developed. They often have unique views towards some topics. These views are important.

Teaching important points Students need to understand the Biro’s invention story of ballpoint pen and its effects. Students understand the “ 5W1H principle” in story’s retelling.
Teaching difficult points Students summarize the main idea of the article. Students retell the story with the “ 5W1H principle” . Students share their own understanding of “giant”.

Lead-in Greet the students. Show some pictures and ask students whether they can name the inventor and invention in the pictures. Review the inventions and the inventors students have learnt in the reading section. Students watch the pictures and guess what they refer to. Arouse students’ interests and help students review what they have learnt in the previous class.
Pre-reading Show the picture of Laszlo Biro. Let students guess who the man is and explain the feature of the name. Introduce the ballpoint pen in a humorous way. Review the evolution of pen by giving some examples. Students brainstorm who the man is and get prepared for the topic they are going to learn today. Students get to know the topic in today’s class in an interesting and can enrich their background knowledge of the pen.
While-reading Ask students to read the passage quickly and find the main idea. Show some tips for grasping the main idea. Explain the meaning of “giant” . Ask students to read paragraph 1-2 carefully after the tape and answer three questions. Introduce the 5W1H principle for retelling the story and encourage students to retell the story. Ask students to read paragraph 3-5 carefully after the tape and answer the T/F questions. Students read the article quickly and find out the main idea. Students read the 2nd paragraph carefully and try to retell the story with the 5W1H principle. Students retell the story to their partners. Try to answer the questions on the PowerPoint. Students understand the story and grasp the skills for retelling the story. Students get prepared for sharing their understanding of the giant.
Post-reading Present some inventions named after the inventor. Encourage students to share their understanding of giant. Present teacher’s understanding of the giant. Students brainstorm to think of the giant in their eyes. Students share their understanding of the giant Raise students’ cultural awareness. Inspire students and cultivate critical thinking ability.
Homework Ask students to find an invention and write a short story about it with 5W1H. Ask students to describe a giant in their eyes with 3 sentences. Finish the homework independently. Solidate what we have learned in class.
