Have you ever thought about how astronauts wash their clothes without gravity It’s not easy. There’s no washing machine on the International Space Station (ISS,国际空间站). Luckily, this may not be a problem in the future.
Russian scientists are making a special (特别的) washing machine for astronauts to use in space. The washing machine is different from the ones we use. For one thing, it doesn’t need water. Instead, it collects (收集) carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) from the air that the astronauts breathe out. Then it uses high pressure (压力) to turn that carbon dioxide into a liquid (液体) that can help clean clothes.
This will make astronauts’ lives much easier. Because normal washing machines can’t work in space, astronauts living aboard the ISS need to bring as many clothes as possible. Sometimes they even ask other spaceships to bring clean clothes from the Earth. According to Newsweek, three astronauts living on the ISS for a year need 657.7 kg of clothes. Six people taking a two-year trip to Mars would need 2,722 kg of clothes. That’s as heavy as two cars!

Many people dream of travelling into outer space. However, spending too much time in space may cause health problems, according to NASA. That’s why astronauts shouldn’t spend more than six months on the International Space Station (ISS) at a time.
Muscle（肌肉）and bone loss
In a weightless environment, astronauts don’t need to use their muscles to support themselves, so their muscles start shrinking. To keep their muscles strong, astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day on the ISS.
Sleep disorder （紊乱）
