Analysis of the teaching material
The article is about Aunt Linda’s replies to the Internet posts on page 51. This article gives advice to four teenagers based on their problems in their daily life. The topic is very close to the students’ life, and there is few new words in the material. Therefore, students can understand the material easily. What’s more, the material can also arouse students’ interest in thinking about how to deal with the problems. And also the students can form a positive attitude when they meet difficulties. Equally important, this article is well structured and well written, which can be employed to train students’ reading ability. Besides, it can act as a good example for students to follow when they write a letter.
Analysis of the students
Comparatively speaking, the students in this class are more active than passive, but the students’ language abilities vary. 3/5of the students are willing to express themselves confidently, while 1/5of the students are always waiting for others’ reaction, and the rest are always silent. So the students are divided into groups of four with different levels in order to help students get the main idea and locate the key information quickly as well as properly understand some difficult expressions according to the context. In that case, all the students may have a chance to take part in the class activities.

Step 1 Warming-up Lead students to recall their memories and think about the four teenagers’ problems. Write down the word ‘advice/suggestions”. Ask a series of questions related to each teenager’s problems to help students give advice. Review the four teenagers’ problems and talk freely about the questions raised by the teacher. To get the class warmed up and lead in the topic “giving advice”.
Guide students to work in groups of four and give their advice based on the questions listed in the table. Brainstorm some advice To elicit students’ prior knowledge related to the topic and to get students fully prepared for the reading part.
Step 2 First Reading Let’s get to know what advice Aunt Linda will give to each teenager. Ask students to go through the passage quickly and find out the sentences which can best illustrate the proper advice. Find out and write down the proper advice in the table by themselves. 1. To help students have a general idea of the article. 2. To enhance students’ ability to locate key information through reading.
Step 3 Second Reading Ask students to work in groups of four and find out the exact sentences used to give advice. Ask students to share the notes with group members and try to make up the missing part. Ask students to summarize the useful sentence patterns used to give advice. Be active to find out the sentence patterns in the reading. Be brave to share notes with the other group members. To enhance students’ reading ability through focusing on details. To improve students’ cooperative ability through sharing notes. To help students to extract the important sentence patterns used to give advice according to the article.
Step 4 Activity 1 Ask students to work in pairs to think about more useful sentence patterns used to give advice. Write some hints on the blackboard to help students. Organize the students to practice in pairs. Each student needs to know the sentence patterns, so they need to prepare and cooperate with each other. Each student needs to present their work. To help students to master more materials. In that case, the students may give advice more confidently.
Step 5 Activity 2 Ask students to work in a group of four to think about the proper advice based on the situation they choose. They need to combine the useful sentence patterns with the situation. Cooperate with group members to finish the activity. To help students sort out what has been learnt and get them prepared for giving advice confidently.
