Family Life (Reading)
Analysis of the teaching material: Family life is the reading passage from Unit 3 of 9A Oxford English, which was published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. It includes two interviews about family life: one is about Emily, and the other is about Jerry. The topic is familiar to students. And as both Emily and Jerry are teenagers, students may find that they have something in common. By reading the two interviews, students can know about what different family life is like.
Teaching objectives: At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
Language knowledge Master the words (iron, abroad, relationship, possessions, out of date, etc. )and figure out the question asked of each paragraph.
Language skills Summarize the main ideas of each paragraph and figure out the questions asked of the two interviews.
Learning strategy Use the reading strategy of compare and contrast to analyze Emily’s and Jerry’s family life;
Emotion and attitude Understand the importance of family.
Teaching importance: Analyze Emily’s and Jerry’s family life by using the reading strategy of compare and contrast; Let students understand the importance of family.
Teaching difficulty: Help students figure out the questions asked in the interviews.

Teaching procedures
Step one: Lead-in 1. Lead-in: Read the cartoon. 1). What does Hi think of his mother 2). Why 2. Brainstorm: What activities do you usually do together with your family
Step two: Pre-reading I. Look at the pictures, the title, the introduction and the sub-headings of the interviews on page 35. Then choose the correct answers. (P 34) 1. The article is about family life in _____. a. cities b. the countryside 2. Emily is _____ years old. a. 14 b. 15 3. It seems that _____has a bigger family and likes to help with the housework. a. Step three: While-reading I. Look at the picture and answer the questions: What is Emily doing Does she look happy II. Listen to the interview and answer questions: How do you know that Emily is unhappy Can you find any evidence What can we infer from this sentence Can you find any evidence III. Look at the picture and answer the questions: What is Jerry doing Does he look happy IV. Listen to the interview and answer questions: Can you find more evidence to support your idea What can we infer from this sentence Can you find any evidence V. How many parts are there in each interview What is special about the two interviews VI. Read and figure out the questions asked. Skim the first part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are about. (Who, people, in family ) Skim the second part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are mainly talking about. (Have, get, many possessions ) Skim the third part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are mainly talking about. (Do, housework) Skim the fourth part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are mainly talking about. (Do, go out, or, do things together, family ) Skim the fifth part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are mainly talking about. (Do, parents, set rules for you ) Skim the sixth part of Emily’s and Jerry’s interviews to tell what they are mainly talking about. (What, like, most, family ) VII.
