Teaching design for Unit 3 Family life
Topic Speaking : Offering, accepting and refusing help
Student Grade 9 Time 20 minutes
III Teaching Objectives By the end of the class, students are expected to Learn expression of offering, accepting and refusing help politely in different situations Discuss the housework students do
IV Important & Difficult points Students may have difficulty in using proper expression in different situations.

Activity Activity purpose Activity description & Interaction pattern
Step I Lead-in – 1.5 mins
1. Watch and guess 1.To arouse interest and lead in the topic 1. Class work T shows a video about a common scene of helping others in daily life. Ss learn that it is a happy thing to help others, but it is important to know the better way to offer help.
Step II Presentation – 5.5 mins
2. Watch and learn 2. To stimulate background knowledge 2. Class work T leads Ss to learn the expressions of helping others in the video. Ss learn the proper ways of offering help.
3. Listen and learn 3.To learn by listening 3. Individual work T plays the tape for Ss to listen. Ss listen to the conversation and fill in the blanks. Then Ss answer the questions according to the conversation. T presents different ways to offer, accept and refuse help.
Step III Practice – 6 mins
4.Controlled practice 4. To demonstrate an example 4. Individual work T presents a scene in the classroom. Ss read the dialogue and find out which sentence is used to offer/ accept/ refuse help.
5. Semi-controlled practice 5. To pave for creative speaking T-Ss interaction Ss complete the conversations in 2 different situations. T show one possible version and explain the usage.
Step IV Produce– 7 mins
8. Think and create (Free-controlled) 8. To use what Ss learn in daily life 8. Group work T inspires Ss to think and analyze the common scenes in daily life. Ss make up their own conversations in the given situations. Use the conversation A1 as a model.
9. Expand 9. To discuss the housework students do 9. T shows pictures of different housework Ss ask classmates the questions in the boxes and tick (√) the appropriate boxes. (P43) Then report the group’s results to the class.
Homework design All: Review the expressions you learnt in this lesson. Level A: 1.Practice the conversation in A1. 2. Ask and answer questions in the box of B1. Level B: 1. Create conversations based on situations given. 2. Report your group’s results to the class.
