Do you know when the first ancient Olympics was held
The first ancient Olympics (Olympic Games) dates back to776 BC. It began as part of a religious festival(宗教庆典) to honor the Great God Zeus(宙斯).

A wreath of olive leaves(橄榄圈) stands for peace, while the fire stands for brightness, peace, friendship, unity(团结) and justice(正义).

The winners of the games were offered a wreath of olive leaves(橄榄圈). The winners were called heroes.
The Ancient Olympics ended in 391 AD for some reasons,but its spirit remained.

In 1896, the Olympic Games came back to our lives. This time, it was not a religious festival, but a sport meeting to honor the spirit of Olympics. It is held every four years from 1896.
The Olympic Motto is: faster, higher and stronger.
In ancient times, it is called citius, altius, fortius.

Helen at the Olympics
In ancient Greece, women were not allowed to watch the Olympics. However, Helen, a brave woman, wanted to watch her son, Rodus, run.
“I’m going to see you at the Olympics tomorrow,” said Helen.
“But Mum, the king will be angry,” said Rodus.
“Don’t worry. I’ll think of a way,” replied Helen.
The next day, Helen dressed as a soldier to attend the Olympics. She was soon caught.
“Take her to prison,” said the king.
