Step 1 Introduce the structure and clarity of a well-organized essay
Activity: Ask students to analyze the structure of an essay `
Step 2 Introduce the ways to analyze the content of an essay
Activity 1: Ask students to analyze an essay by discussing questions in groups and by constructing a backwards outline
Does the essay have a unified point of view Are all the points developed logically
Are the topic sentences and supporting details arranged properly
Is the essay coherent with good transitions
Activity 2: Ask students to discuss and find out the problems in the content of a paragraph (topic sentence and supporting details)
Activity 3: ask students to revise the paragraph (first draft, second draft and third draft)
Activity 4: ask students to find the transitions used in an essay and improve a paragraph by adding transitions.
Step 3 Introduce the ways to editing spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes
Activity 1: ask students to revise a paragraph by using the abbreviations to mark all the mistakes
Activity 2: ask students to revise the common mistakes in sentences
Incomplete sentence or sentence fragment
Run-on sentences
Incorrect verb forms

Step 4 Remind students of the importance of reading their writing aloud
Step 5 Sum up the self-check list that can be used in revising a piece of writing
Activity: ask one or two students to sum up what they have learnt in this lesson

Use the self-check list to analyze your classmate’s essay and revise it if necessary.
