In an unusual move, wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees to keep them from starving. But feeding the manatees takes a lot of food. So far,the workers have already given out 25 tons of
lettuce.
Manatees are huge sea animals that can be as long as 4 meters when grown. They can weigh up to 590 kilograms.Although they’re very large, manatees only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm water looking for food.
But Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animalssince1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems the animals face is boats. Manatees are curious, and quite slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being killed by boats.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge:They can't get enough to eat.Seagrass that manatees depend upon began to disappear around 2011.Last year,1,101manatees died. That was a record. Most died from starving to death. Many of the manatees that remain are very thin.
So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to provide emergency food for the manatees. They decided to feed them on green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. As for the feeding place, they chose a part of the Indian River Lagoon where Florida Power Light has a power plant. The power plant releases warm and clean water,so it’s popular with the manatees.
This plan is very successful.Around 350manatees come here every day to get food. Sometimes as many as 800 manatees can be here.Even so,scientists worry that many more manatees could starve this winter. So Florida is working to help sea grass beds grow. For example, the government has set aside$8 million for the effort.

An outbreak of“avian flu”-an illness affecting birds-has swept the world. The disease has been spread by migrant(迁徙的)birds. It moved from Asia to Europe, and has now spread to North America. The flu has led to the death of tens of millions of birds. Luckily, the flu doesn't seem to affect humans.
The last time there was an outbreak this serious was seven years ago.The 2015 bird flu caused the death of over 50 million birds in the US alone. Slowly, over time, that outbreak ended.
This bird flu was first found in Saudi Arabia in February,2020.All through 2020 and 2021,the disease continued to spread. The bird flu appears to be at least as deadly(致命的)as the2015 flu,and seems to spread more easily. As one expert put it,"A lot more birds appear to be affected."In the US alone, over 40 different kinds of wild birds have been found to have the disease, and those birds are spread out over 30 different states.
Zoos across the US are now keeping their birds indoors to try to keep them from mixing with wild birds. To keep the flu from spreading, farms with a few infected birds often have to kill thousands of birds, even if they don't all have the disease yet.In Europe, farmers have had to kill over 17 million birds to keep the flu from spreading. In the US,farmers have killed nearly 24 million birds since February.
Many people are hoping that this avian flu outbreak will end on its own,the way the 2015outbreak did.But experts aren't sure when that will happen.
