Unit 11 Lesson 3 The Advertising Game
First Period
Analysis of Teaching Materials:
This lesson is the third lesson of Unit 11. It is language-focused and relatively long. The text is mainly about the development of advertising and the features, design strategies and types of advertisements. Since students have learned lesson 4 Advertisements in Unit 10, which introduces four advertisements, they may be curious about the development of advertising. Students may find it easier and more interesting to read and understand the reading material with the help of pictures and video clips of advertisements. They can use different reading skills to understand the specific information and learn some new words in the context.
Teaching Objectives:
1. Students will know the design, the idea and the effect of advertisements.
2. Students can understand advertisement development using different reading skills.
3. Students can discuss advertising and the effect it brings to our life.

Warm-up
Lead-in
Step 1 T plays a section of video and has Ss guess, “what product is the advertisement for ” To arouse students’ reading interest and lead in the topic. CW 2’
Step 2 T presents some pictures and asks students to tell where we can see advertisements. T asks students to think about different types of advertisements. To let students form an impression that advertisements have great effect on us and the purposes of advertising. CW 2’
Pre-reading
Step 3 T helps students to know some new words and get prepared for reading. (Students should match the new words in the sentences with their meanings.) To reduce the reading difficulties. CW 3’
Step 4 T asks Ss to predict the genre of the text. To get students to use the reading strategy of making prediction. IW 1’
While-reading
Step 5 Check their prediction. Fast reading: Ss read the text quickly and give a heading for each paragraph. To make students skim for the main topic of each paragraph. IW – CW 4’
Step 6 Careful reading: Ss read each paragraph carefully to sort out the key information presented on the ppt. T presents some pictures and video clips to help students’ understanding. T gets the feedback from the whole class. To develop students’ ability to read for specific information. IW – PW – CW 20’
Step 7 T asks students to summarise the main idea of the text. To develop their ability to summarize the main idea and make them obtain an overview of the whole text. IW – PW -- CW 2’
Post-reading
Step 8 Ss work in groups and talk about how the advertisement affects our daily life, e.g. “Have you ever bought anything because you liked the idea promoted in the advertisement ” Ss may tell stories of their own to support their opinions. To help students digest what they have learned and have some further thinking. GW 6’
Step 9 T presents some advertisements for students’ appreciation. To encourage students to be critical when they watch ads and thus form a correct attitude towards ads, CW 5’
Homework
Write a short passage about the advertisement with the following hints. Options: design an advertisement page about a product. (Remind them to be creative.)
