As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location(位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(文互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer
users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing
8.The passage begins with two questions to____________.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author's attitude
C.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information

C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
10.In transactive memory, people___________.
A.keep the information in mind B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer D.remember how to find the information
11. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow' s research
A.We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.

Eating out is such a pleasure-- -the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else- -that it's a pity to ruin the experience by sharing it with other people.
Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special attractions. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There' s nothing worse than having to invent and deliver an opinion on school league tables or Sanchez's move to Manchester United, plus listening to everyone else's opinions, when all you really want to do is enjoy each mouthful along the way.
A second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to combine food with one of life's other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully : Indian or Chinese restaurants are the best---you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material.
But perhaps the biggest attraction of a table for one is the chance it gives to people : watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them- -the first date ,business meeting or night out with friends- -produce human behaviour of surprising richness and variety. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor( 投资者) Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive
This“human zoo”part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I'd hate to be famous :everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn't be able to watch. them. The snooker player Steve Davis said that this was one of the strangest consequences(后果) of becoming well-known:he got very worried about his eating in public ,almost to the level of doubting whether he was doing it right.
So next time you're considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian :“The best number for a dinner party is two - myself and a super head waiter.”
12. What does the text mainly talk about
A.The reasons for eating out alone. B.The trouble with eating in public.
C.The suggestions about dining out. D.The fear of making dining choices.
13. What is the best part of dining out alone
A.One can fix his eyes on the food. B.One can enjoy reading while eating.
C.One is likely to come across famous people. D.One is given the chance to watch other diners.
14. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5
A. Steve Davis cared too much about table manners.
B.Famous people are always the center of attention.
C. Being famous may ruin the joy of eating out alone.
D.Being watched seems far better than watching others.
15. What is suggested at the end of the text
A. Dining with friends. B.Chatting over dinner. C.Having a table for one. D. Sharing a table with a waiter.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we' ve never been before.
But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.
16______________ Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.
For anything you're about to send, ask yourself,“Would I say this to the person's face ”If the answer is no, rewrite and
reread. 17_________________
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 18__________________If it's caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
19___________________Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. 20____________ At the same time,if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.
A.It's natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. When you send short messages. to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one's chimney and put toys in one's stocking on Christmas Eve! “What a great country!”I thought. After I looked up“stocking”in my
Chinese -English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my cleanest, longest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel(壁炉架). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character.- Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn't help
giggling(咯咯地笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time,I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and
was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit by the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every a December since then,! the ; topic. of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up,and I would amuse my
friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn't know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve,I heard a knock on the door when I was
watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.

第一节
One possible version:
In modern times, it’s easy to see that the Internet is good for students. Starting a new school life in a different place and with a full schedule, we barely have time to get together. However, with the help of the Internet, we don’t need to care about time and location; we can contact old friends through the real-time video chat.
Since the beginning of the new term, my best friend and I have been studying in separate schools, so he can’t make it to my birthday party. But on my birthday, we had a really good video chat. He sent me his best wishes. I was really touched.
In my view, the Internet brings people convenience, especially when it comes to connection and communication.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cup, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “A Christmas gift for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I united the ribbon with my heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Paragraph 2:
Through tear-blurred eyes, i recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audience of my sad story. The card read: Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas. I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of that year couldn’t be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness.
