三、阅读理解

Ten years ago, when I was in junior school, Mrs. Amatuli was my language teacher. One day at lunch time, I was getting ready to eat my cold fish sandwich as usual and suddenly Mrs. Amatuli asked me if she could buy the sandwich from me. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot lunch from the cafeteria. I was very pleased. I never bought my lunch from the cafeteria. It was too expensive for my family, and I always carried my lunch and took the bag back home to use again the next day.
Seeing that other students went to the cafeteria after class, I felt my heart was filled with admiration. You can imagine how pleased I was when I had the opportunity to buy a hot lunch. Kids always complained about the cafeteria food but I really wished to buy it. When we finished lunch that day, Mrs. Amatuli took me aside and explained why she had bought my sandwich. She said she was a Catholic and Catholics didn’t eat red meat on Fridays — they ate fish on Fridays. From then on, every Friday she bought my fish sandwich and with the money I could get in line with other kids for a hot lunch.
One year later, I knew from a classmate that Mrs. Amatuli was not a Catholic and her family was not rich. She bought my cold sandwich because she knew that a poor girl would be excited at the simple act of having a hot lunch. She wanted to help me! I will never forget her sympathy and generosity. I will be grateful to my dear teacher, Mrs. Amatuli, forever.

Eddie, Aged 17
Being yourself is one important thing you have to remember when going to senior high school. I don’t know what your junior high school was like, but senior high school teachers will not care about such things as how much homework you have already finished in one night. It means that you had better learn to manage your time wisely.
Frank, Aged 16
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You’ll probably love it. I know I did. You should join some clubs where you can meet people with the same interests. And taking part in some outdoor activities will also help to make your senior high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Bill, Aged 15
When I began senior high school I was really nervous, especially since I had been taught at home all through junior high school. I think the best advice is that you should relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
James, Aged 16
I have to tell you the truth that the first day of my senior high school is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it soon. Don’t be afraid of anyone. Just take it easy. It really helps if you make some friends and stay with them. After the first week, you’ll feel better. Don’t worry.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
36.According to the passage ______.
A.boxing rings should be round
B.pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
C.there should be an egg in an eggplant
D.sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
37.Which of the following is the correct plural form (复数形式)
A.Beeth. B.Meese.
C.Geese. D.Tooth.
38.Which of the following has the similar meaning
A.Quite a lot and quite a few.
B.Overlook and oversee.
C.A wise man and a wise guy.
D.Hot as hell and cold as hell.
39.Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.
A.lazy B.crazy C.clever D.stupid

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. Then set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up with listening to the same record together. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that many people are doing it. They have come out of their cocoon into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be.
And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share with your classmates at once, well, go to it. Find yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.
40.In this passage, the author wants to tell______.
A.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves
B.readers how to be popular with people around
C.parents how to control and guide their children
D.people how to understand and respect each other
41.According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but in fact, most of them______.
A.have much difficulty understanding each other B.lack confidence
C.dare not cope with problems single-handed D.are much afraid of getting lost
42.What does the author think of advertisements
A.Convincing. B.Influential. C.Instructive. D.Authoritative(权威的).
43.During the teenage years, one should learn to______.
A.differ from others in as many ways as possible B.get into the right reason and become popular
C.find one’s real self D.rebel against parents and the popularity wave

What Can We Do for Our School
Hello, everyone. It’s my privilege to deliver a speech about “what we can do for our school”, and I think each of us can contribute to beautifying our school.
The first thing we can do is to make our campus more beautiful by protecting the flowers, grasses and trees in the school, or organizing a thorough cleaning on the campus. Second, we should carry out waste sorting so that less pollution will be caused. Last but not least, when we leave the classroom, never should we forget to turn off the light to save energy.
I believe if everyone makes a little effort, we’ll make a big difference to our school! Let’s do our part for our school.
Thank you for listening!
