Ⅴ.阅读理解
Bill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology.“If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour,” says Gates.“Or, you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price (标价) of a new car would be less than $50. Why haven’t you guys kept up?”
The president of GM smiles and says, “Because the federal government won’t let us build cars that crash four times a day.”
Why is that funny (or not funny, as the case may be)? Human beings love to laugh, and the average adult laughs 17 times a day. Humans love to laugh so much that there are actually industries built around laughter. Jokes, sitcoms and comedies are all designed to get us laughing, because laughing feels good. For us it seems so natural, but the funny thing is that humans are the only species that laughs. Laughter is actually a complex response that involves many of the same skills used in solving problems.
Laughter is a great thing—that’s why we’ve all heard the saying,“Laughter is the best medicine.” There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. When we look at laughter—what it is, what happens in our brains when we laugh, what makes us laugh and how it can make us healthier and happier, there’s a huge amount about it that no one understands yet.
1. The best title of the passage is __________.
A. Joke B. Laughter
C. Fun D. Humor
2. Which of the following sentences in this passage is the most humorous?
A.“You would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8.”
B.“It would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour.”
C.“The sticker price of a new car would be less than $50.”
D.“The federal government won’t let us build cars that crash four times a day.”
3. Which one is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Human beings love to laugh.
B. Humans laugh because it can fight disease.
C. Laughter is a complex response of humans.
D. Laughing can make humans feel good.
Ⅵ.任务型阅读
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family.
Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring.
If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fictions, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options.
The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.
Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.
Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; The Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

Ⅴ.阅读理解
What is it that makes people laugh? More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle defined (定义) jokes as the pleasure that results from a feeling of joy by showing we’re better than someone else in a certain way. According to Aristotle and many other philosophers, all jokes depend mainly on showing inferiority in another person or group of persons—that is, putting it clearly, on showing that they are worse off than ourselves. Jokes raise our good opinion of ourselves at someone else’s expense.
Showing how much better than other people we are is only one reason why we like jokes. Someone may also use a joke to express their anger or their cruelty or any other kind of action that is not acceptable to us. We feel free to laugh when we hear about someone sliding on a banana skin. The joke lets us express those attitudes which are usually unacceptable to society. This is probably the reason why some of the jokes, especially those involving cruelty, are so popular with certain people.
Besides, all jokes depend on our enjoyment of laughing at something that is strange and out of place because it’s different from things which are happening around it. The same situation can be either sad or pleasant, depending entirely on how strange and out of place it is. If a girl in a bathing suit falls into a swimming pool, we don’t laugh because nothing unusual has happened. But if a man in a smart suit falls in, the situation is at once unusual in a pleasant way and we laugh. A good joke-teller will always try to build up a situation in which one thing is expected until something unexpected suddenly happens, and so we laugh.
1. The underlined word “inferiority”(in Paragraph 1) means __________.
A. something that is not as good as something else
B. something that is better than something else
C. someone that is not as good as someone else
D. someone that is better than someone else
2. According to Aristotle, all jokes depend mainly on __________.
A. showing inferiority in another person or group of persons
B. resulting in a sense of success
C. having a good opinion of other people
D. making people laugh unexpectedly
3. What will a good joke-teller always try to do?
A. Make a sad situation into a pleasant one.
B. Make different things happen at the same time.
C. Make an unexpected thing happen in an expected situation.
D. Make people laugh at something unusual and out of place.

Providing a high-quality education for all children is important to America’s economic future. President Obama has decided to provide every child with access to a complete and competitive education, from cradle (摇篮) to career.
The years before a child reaches kindergarten are among the most critical in his or her life to influence learning. The President will urge states to introduce high standards across all publicly funded early learning settings, develop new programs to improve opportunities and outcomes, engage parents in their child’s early learning and development, and improve the early education workforce.
President Obama will reform America’s public schools to deliver a 21st century education that will prepare all children for success in the new global work place. He will push to end the use of ineffective,“off-the-shelf”tests, and support new, state-of-the- art assessment and responsibility systems that provide timely and useful information about the learning and progress of students.
Teachers are the single most important resource to children’s learning. President Obama will invest in a national effort to reward outstanding teachers, while enlisting the best and brightest in the field of teaching. And he will challenge state and school districts to remove ineffective teachers from the classroom.
The President believes that investment in education must be accompanied by reform and innovation (创新). He supports the expansion of high-quality charter schools (特许学校). He has challenged states to lift limits that stop growth among successful charter schools and has encouraged strict responsibility for all charter schools.
President Obama has decided to ensure that America will regain its lost ground and have the highest proportion of students graduating from colleges in the world by 2020. The President believes that regardless of educational paths after high school, all Americans should enroll in at least one year of higher education or job training to better prepare our workforce for the 21 st century economy.

Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she was really a witch.
They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take a flight. Suddenly, the old lady’s work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on the top of the haystack.
The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled (蹒跚) off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch could own a black cat with three legs.
There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.
“We have to go and help her,”whispered Amy.
“What if it is a trick?”replied Ben.
“Don’t be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already,”reasoned Meg.“Come on, Amy! Let’s go.”The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.
Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady’s face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken.“Go and get Dad,”Amy yelled at her brother.“Tell him about the accident.”
The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs.
40. Why were the children hiding in the tree?
A. Because they wanted to watch Mrs. Tailor do her housework closely.
B. Because they were playing a hide-and-seek game.
C. Because they wanted to find out if the rumors about Mrs. Tailor were true.
D. Because they were pretending to be spies.

Generational differences and the economy are shifting more responsibilities for children from their parents to grandparents, according to a new survey.
More than one-third of grandparents aged 50 and older contribute financially to their grandchildren’s upbringing, and 11 percent have a grandchild living with them, the poll by AARP showed.
40 percent of people who responded to the telephone survey, whose average age was 69, reported spending more than $500 on grandchildren over the past year beyond traditional gifts. Education costs accounted for about 50 percent, daily expenses for about 32 percent and medical and dental costs for about 18 percent.
16 percent provided daycare for grandchildren.
“They are the safety nets for American families, helping to pay for practical expenses and necessities,”said Amy Goyer, AARP’s multigenerational and family issues (问题) expert.
“We see many providing daycare services, while growing numbers even have grandchildren living with them,”she said, referring to the 16 percent who watch their grandchildren while the parents are at work or at school.

Introduction to anger
Anger is a natural reaction which comes out when we feel that we have not been given fair treatment. The positive side of this negative emotion is that it has helped us to evolve (进化) as humans and cope in a better manner with our surroundings. However, it tends to become a problem when we fail to control it. Many a time it happens that your anger has hurt others or has spoiled one of your relationships for which you regret later. It has some bad effects on health, too.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those around us whom we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger, it can make you more upset. So tell someone that is close to you, a friend or a family member, about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance of finding a solution to your problem. Besides, there are no better stress relievers than humor. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is becoming unmanageable, you can use humor. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger tends to make us have a lot of negative thoughts. Therefore, we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this you have to first refuse all the negative thoughts that are in your mind one by one. This can be done with a lot of practice. Once you are successful in that, you have to maintain your focus only on the positive things of life.
Meditation (冥想) is an excellent anger management technique for you to use. In addition, what we do is to disconnect ourselves from the outer world and focus all our attention on the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that tend to cause anger.

书面表达
Peter,
Thank you for your trust. I hope you can try to understand your parents. It is your parents who first give you encouragement when you meet with difficulties. When you can’t get along well with your studies, their inspiration seems to be a lamp, which offers you the light of hope, courage and confidence. The only thing that they are concerned about is not just your high grades but what you have learnt.
I suggest that you have a heart-to-heart talk with your parents and tell them that they should set high standards, reward achievements but not punish poor performances. Most importantly, you should prove it to them that you have grown up and can be independent. I’m sure they will understand you sooner or later. May you have a good life.
Your friend,
Alice
