Polly Filler’s article last week was excellent as she condemns the “soft” sentences given to criminals in this country. My brother works as a police officer and he tells me that drug dealers and robbers can be out on the streets only a few weeks or months after committing their crimes, or even get let off with fines. What is even more unbelievable is the fact that some murderers are let out of prison after three or four years.(1) ________________ this, many people are losing faith in the British system of justice.Layout of Letter 1 (单个学生分段朗读,教师提问互动)Introduce the topicSome background about the situationPossible effectsI think we should bring back much harder sentences in this country, (2)__________ criminals are made to pay for what they have done. I totally agree with the American idea of “three strikes and out”– that after committing three crimes criminals are locked up for life. That is the only way of protecting society and preventing young people from leading a life of crime.
Express the attitudeExamples and facts to support the argument(3) __________ money is spent on prisons that they have become like hotels with televisions and gyms. Prisoners should be made to work and not be treated as holiday makers at a holiday camp.
I also believe we should bring the death penalty back to this country as in the States. When a person has killed somebody they don’t deserve to live. We also need to think about the wishes of the families and friends of murder victims who demand that justice be done.Examples and facts to support the argumentconclusionLayout of Letter 2 (两人一组标出文章层次June 20
I was horrified to read RJ Butcher’s letter in this newspaper last week. He/She sees punishment as an opportunity for revenge. In my opinion, the primary goal of punishment should be to reform the person who has committed the crime . We need to help and reform criminals (4)_______ make them into useful members of the community. We also need to do away with the social problems, like drugs and poverty, that often lead to crime.Introduce the topicExpress the attitudePossible reasonsI am totally against harder sentences on principle and really feel the death penalty should be abolished. The only time that life sentences should be given is when a person is so dangerous that the community is at risk if he or she is let out of prison. Mr/Ms Butcher’s suggestion that we bring back the death penalty is even worse. Let’s face it, the death penalty is murder and no better than any other murder (5)_________ it is committed by the state. It is a cruel form of punishment which is against human dignity. Besides, it is highly unfair (6)___________ possible mistakes. In the USA in the last 100 years, 23 men have been wrongly sentenced to death and there are doubts about 400 other cases. The death penalty also affects some sections of the community much more than others. We also need to think about the wishes of the families and friends.

7. Capital punishment is judicial murder.
8. It is a savage form of punishment which is against human dignity.Voice your opinion What is your opinion about crime and punishment?
After reading the two letters, which do you agree with most? CrimePunishmentVoice your opinion In your spoken English class, your teacher shows you the following picture. You are asked to describe the picture and explain how you understand it.Possible version (红色为观点,粉色本课核心词汇) As we can see from the picture, the balance of the scale is broken because of the “heavier crime” and “lighter punishment”.
The obvious idea conveyed by the picture is that our society calls for severe punishment for the crimes. With the booming of the economy, the number of crimes like drug dealing, rape is growing fast. Due to soft sentences, some criminals fail to realise the damage they bring to the society, which easily causes repeated crimes. Besides, prisons even provide television and gym, making them comfortable hotels instead of hells for prisoners. Treated as holiday makers, how can criminals make sense of being punished. What’s worse, after paying enough fine some criminals can be seen on the some criminals can be seen on the streets only a few weeks or months after committing their crimes. Awfully these phenomena may cause other crimes like bribery and corruption.
To keep the balance of the scale of crimes and punishment, we do need human rights to protect the benefit for both criminals and victims, but we should never ignore justice. So I think it is high time we brought back harder sentence.CheckingLayout

With the rapid pace of the old city reconstruction project, recently on the Internet a hot discussion has been held on whether the old courtyards in the inner city should be preserved or torn down. Different people have different ideas. 23Courtyards—preserve or tear down The people who support the idea of keeping the old courtyards argue that courtyards are a typical symbol of Beijing’s history and culture. They illustrate us the style of old Beijing architecture as well as the wisdom of the old Chinese. The courtyards were built neatly in blocks and were connected by little alleys, creating a real community . Naturally, people enjoy a harmonious life in the courtyards , where residents support each other when help is needed and share the joy and sadness of everyday life. They also think that if the typical building style and special culture are well preserved, a lot of tourists will flock here . 24 However, as for those in favor of tearing down the courtyards, their opinions are worth considering.
Firstly, compared to high buildings, courtyards occupy too large an area, as a result, this city can house less population, which is obviously against the process of urbanization. Besides, with a long history, some facilities there are out of date, making people’s life inconvenient. Also, just because the houses were built facing each other so closely, people’s private life cannot be ensured.25
In my opinion, it is necessary to preserve the original architecture style of the courtyards, due to the importance of protecting cultural relics. But restoring the old part and renewing the facilities should be on the way in order to bring residents there a happy and comfortable life.26

Dear Mr. Principal,
I am a senior student of our school. I would like to say something about the canteen service in our school. In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What’s more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.
However, we feel the price of the meals is a little too high. Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school?
Thanks for your considerations.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

As the railroads and the highways shaped the American West in the past centuries, a new electrical generating(发电)and transmission (输送) system for the 21st century will leave a lasting mark on the West, for better or worse. Much of the real significance of railroads and highways is not in their direct physical effect on the scenery, but in the ways that they affect the surrounding community. 30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Wheelchair Experience.
B. Weakness and Kindness.
C. Weakness and Strength
D. A Driving Experience
In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others. Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.

, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared. There is a widely-held belief that the Great Wall serves as the best symbol for both ancient and modern China. Every year, tourists flock to the Great Wall to see the grand sights of this miracle. So it’s not a rare view to see tourists squeezing their way up the Great Wall.
The Great Wall used to be a powerful fortress in ancient China. It has a long history dating back to Qin dynasty. Ying Zheng, the first Chinese emperor, built it with the aim of defending against the invaders. Guards were placed on it so as to keep an eye on the invaders.
The Great Wall leaves the strongest impression on travelers from all over the world.Module 8 Unit 24

体验1 北京2011. D篇:
As the railroads and the highways shaped the American West in the past centuries, a new electrical generating(发电)and transmission (输送) system for the 21st century will leave a lasting mark on the West, for better or worse. Much of the real significance of railroads and highways is not in their direct physical effect on the scenery, but in the ways that they affect the surrounding community. The same is true of big solar plants and the power lines that will be laid down to move electricity around.
The 19th century saw land grants(政府拨地)offered to railroad companies to build the transcontinental railroads ,leaving public land in between privately owned land . In much of the west ,some of the railroad sections were developed while others remained undeveloped ,and in both cases the landownership has presented unique challenges to land management ,with the completion or the interstate highway system ,many of the small towns which sprang up as railway stops and developed well ,have lost their lifeblood and died .
Big solar plants and their power lines will also have effects far beyond their direct footprint in the west .this is not an argument against building then ,we need alternative energy badly .and to really take advantage of it we need to be able to move electricity around far more readily than we can now .
So trade-offs will have to be made .some scenic sport will be sacrificed .some species (物种)will be forced to move ,or will be carefully moved to special accommodations ,deals will be struck to reduce the immediate effects .
The lasting effects of these trade-offs are another matter .the 21st century development of the American west as an ideal place for alternative energy is going to throw off a lot of power and money to do a lot of good .but it is just as likely that they will be spent wastefully and will leave new problems behind, just like the railroad and the highway .
The money set aside in negotiated trade –offs and the institution that control will shape the west far beyond the immediate footprint of power plants and transmission lines .so let’s remember the effects of the railroad and the highways as we construct these new power plants in the west .
70. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. How the Railways Have Affected the West
B. How Solar Energy Could Reshape the West
C. How the Effects of Power Plants Can Be Reduced
D. How the Problems of the Highways Have Been Settled

Open Letter to an Editor
I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently---one who works for you. In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.
Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume (简历) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.
So why is he looking for a way out?
He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.
The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.
He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?
So your reporter has set me thinking.
Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists---everyone--is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can't do it, they'll find someone who can.
63. The letter aims to remind editors that they should _______
A. keep their best reporters at all costs
B. give more freedom to their reporters
C. be aware of their reporters' professional development
D. appreciate their reporters' working styles and attitudes

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.
They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes(路线).
During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes(尖状物)that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days. Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.
However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.
Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.
“Your partner can save your life — you can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”

30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Wheelchair Experience.
B. Weakness and Kindness.

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well ad the social environment it came influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.
Music provides a kind of perception(感知)that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive(情感的)meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.
The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.
Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.
So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.
71. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Music education deserves more attention.
B. Music should be of top education priority.
C. Music is an effective communication tool.
D. Music education makes students more imaginative.

While parents, particularly mothers, have always been attached to their infants(婴儿). social conditions frequently made this attachment difficult to maintain(保持). First of all, the high infant death rate in the premodern times meant that such attachments often ended in hopelessness. Perhaps to prevent the sadness that infant death caused, a number of societal practices developed which worked against early attachment of mother and child.
One of these premodern attachment discouraging practices was to leave infants unnamed until they had survived into the second year. Another practice that discouraged maternal(母亲的)attachment was tightly wrapping(包裹)infants. Wrapping effectively prevented the close physical interactions like stroking(抚摸)and kissing that are so much a part of modern mothers’ and fathers’ affection for their infants.
A third practice which had the same distancing effect was wet-nursing. Breast-feeding(母乳哺育)was not popular among the well-to-do in the early modern times; infants were often fed by wet nurses hired for the purpose. In some places, such as nineteenth-century France, city infants were sent to wet nurses in the country. Often a wet nurse would feed her own child first, leaving little milk for the city infant-who, in many cases, died. In Rouen, the death rate for children sent to a wet nurse was 35 percent
71.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Societal Conditions in premodern Times
B.Practices of reducing maternal Attachment
C.Poor Health Service and High Infant Death Rate
D.Differences between Modern and Premodern Parents

体验7:2008北京高考A篇
Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked.
“Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto e tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”
58. What can we learn from the story?
A. Giving is always a pleasure.
B. People should respect each other.
C. An act of kindness can bring people great joy.
D. People should learn to appreciate others’ concern.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.
When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend, He was in despair(失望)and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.
For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think:“Yes, I must tell….”We have never met.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing(愈合的)silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful?
???Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats (栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
????Zoos claim (声称) to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
????The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
???? Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖)of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted n their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
???? Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
3. What does the author try to argue in the passage?
A. Zoos are not worth the public support. B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

The need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the word’s supply of water. With 97% of the word’s water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture ,t he worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture .Although the idea of a water shortage(短缺) seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the word’s agriculture industries experience constant water shortages.
Although dams can be built to store water for agriculture use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution(重新分配) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. Where valleys(山谷) are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements.
This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation(灌溉).In Texas, farmers’ overuse of irrigation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.
Saudi Arabia’s attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.

体验1 北京2011.

Emma Teitgen, 12, thought the chemistry book her teacher recommended would make perfect. Perfect because it might help her fall asleep. Then she downloaded The Elements(元素): A Visual Exploration to her iPad. Instead of making her sleepy, it flowered in her hands. The 118 chemical elements came alive in vivid images. Tapping on link after link, Teitgen was soon absorbed in a digital world. Three hours later, the seventh-grader looked up to see that it was 11 p.m., well past her bedtime.
More than 550 years after Johannes Gutenberg printed 180 copies of the Bible on paper, new technologies are changing the concept of a book and what it means to be literate(受过教育的).
Sound, animation(动画) and the ability to connect to the Internet have created the concept of a living book that can establish an entirely new kind of relationship with readers. As electronic__reading devices develop, books are increasingly able to talk to readers or connect them with a community of fellow readers. The same technology enables readers to reach out to authors, provide instant reaction and even become creative collaborators(合作者), influencing plot developments.
Digital tools are also making it possible for independent authors to publish and promote their books, causing an outpouring of written works on every topic imaginable.
If the great change in the music industry over the last decade is any guide, the closing of more bookstores and a decreasing demand for physical books will force authors and their publishers to find new ways to profit from their work. As in many places online, free content is the rule. Writers who intend to make money will have to find creative ways to attract readers and build an audience to sell advertising on the site.
As for online readers, they often click from one link to the next. The risk is that we become mindless ants following endless digital data. People tend to ask whether this is good or bad. The response is that the tech train is out of the station, and it's impossible to stop.
40.The example of Emma Teitgen mainly shows that
________.
A.Emma Teitgen doesn't like the traditional book
B.iPad is the best tool for chemistry study
C.the way that people study is changing a lot
D.Emma Teitgen likes sleeping when studying
41.With the new technologies, which of the following relationships is strengthened?
A.Readers and books.
B.Readers and authors.
C.Readers and publishers.
D.Authors and publishers.
42.What effect does the technology have on books according to the text?
A.The length of books.
B.The concept of books.
C.The plot of books.
D.The quality of books.
43.The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.the writer's worry about the technology
B.the advantage of the technology
C.the online readers' response
D.the tech train's speed

C
Decision-making under Stress
A new review based on a research shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative (负面的) consequences of a decision.
The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways.
“Stress affects how people learn,” says Professor Mara Mather. “People learn better about positive than negative outcomes under stress.”
For example, two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像) with either rewards or punishments. In one experiment, some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in front of an audience; in the other, some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water. In both cases, the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accurately than those who hadn’t gone through the stress.
This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress –at those moments, only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind. But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect. Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better, but negative consequences are also easily recalled.
The research also found that stress appears to affect decision-making differently in men and women. While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress, their responses to risk turn out to be different.
Men who had been stressed by the cold-water task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way. In stressful situations in which risk-taking can pay off big, men may tend to do better, when caution weighs more, however, women will win.
This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men: they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction.
44. We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend to ______.
A. keep rewards better in their memory
B. recall consequences more effortlessly
C. make risky decisions more frequently
D. learn a subject more effectively
45. According to the research, stress affects people most probably in their ______.
A. ways of making choices B. preference for pleasure
C. tolerance of punishments D. responses to suggestions
46. The research has proved that in a stressful situation, ______.
A. women find it easier to fall into certain habits
B. men have a greater tendency to slow down
C. women focus more on outcomes
D. men are more likely to take risks

D
Wilderness
“In wilderness(荒野) is the preservation of the world.” This is a famous saying from a writer regarded as one of the fathers of environmentalism. The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved.
As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(开发) brings to such landscapes(景观) is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr.Sauven, these ”ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation.
Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view. He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation. But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation. There are ever more people on the Earth, and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival. While the ways of using resources have improved, there is still a growing need for raw materials, and some wildernesses contain them in abundance. If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide, the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so. Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic worth valuing above all others.
I look forwards to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants. One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly. And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm.
This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason. What position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking.
47. John Sauven holds that_____.
A. many people value nature too much
B. exploitation of wildernesses is harmful
C. wildernesses provide humans with necessities
D. the urge to develop the ecosystem services is strong
48. What is the main idea of Para. 3?
A. The exploitation is necessary for the poor people.
B. Wildernesses cannot guarantee better use of raw materials.
C. Useful services of wildernesses are not the reason for no exploitation.
D. All the characteristics concerning the exploitation should be treated equally.
49. What is the author’s attitude towards this debate?
A. Objective. B. Disapproving.
C. Sceptical. D. Optimistic.
50. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion

第二节(共5小题 ;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Empathy
Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __51__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.
Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __52__
There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __53__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.
Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __54__ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.
What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __55__
To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.
Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.
That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.
“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says.
Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.
Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.
Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.
Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.

B. men have a greater tendency to slow down
C. women focus more on outcomes
D. men are more likely to take risks

A. B.
C. D.

Possible version:
Recently, people are having an argument on whether a sky train should be built or not in the city. Opinions vary from person to person. Some people think it necessary to build a sky train. For one thing, building a sky train can help solve traffic problems and people will enjoy a more convenient life. For another, it provides a new means of transportation, which is environmentally friendly.
On the other hand, others hold the opposite opinion. From their point of view, the long process of construction is bound to influence the city's traffic. What's more, too much money will be spent building it, and it will take a long time to get the money back.Weighing the pros and cons, I support the idea that a sky train should be built because not only will the environment be protected but also more space will be saved.
