Accidents are the commonest cause of death among children. One in every six children goes to hospital because of an accident.
Scalds
Small children don’t understand that hot water and hot drinks can be dangerous. A cup of hot tea or coffee or a bath may scald a child badly. A severe scald can mean a long stay in hospital, and a really severe scald can kill.
Falls
Children of all ages fall and hurt themselves from time to time. Luckily, most falls aren’t serious, but some can cause severe injuries, such as head injuries.
For babies, the danger is rolling off the edge of something like a bed, chair, table or kitchen worktop.
Toddlers (蹒跚行走的幼儿) soon learn to climb and explore. To them, climbing on furniture doesn’t seem dangerous. It’s just fun. But it’s very easy for a toddler to fall off a piece of furniture, or down the stairs, or even out of a window or off a balcony.
With older children, adventure accidents are a problem. Climbing trees, high walls, or fences can be dangerous.
Burns
Every year children die in house fires and many more are badly burnt. A cigarette, for example, can easily start a fire. And many fires are started by children playing with fireworks.
But of course it’s not only fires that cause burns. There are things in every home that can burn a child badly — a hot iron for example, or an electric fire.
Drowning
Children love playing with water. Whether it’s in the bath at bed time or in the garden pond or in the sea, water is fun. But it is also dangerous. A baby or toddler can drown in very shallow (浅的) water — less than you put in the bath. ________

People can travel without much money by staying in other people’s house. Sometimes the travelers may sleep for a few nights on other people’s couch (沙发) for free. This way of travelling is called couch surfing.
Couch Surfing.org is an organization that connects travelers all around the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share their homes and hometowns with travelers from other places. In this way strangers can help strangers in order to make the world a better place.

Then they’ll often introduce you to their friends and take you to the places they enjoy. Couch surfing allows you to experience a country and its culture.”
___62___ Delphine, an experienced host from Paris, has an answer. “They say that money makes the world go round but I try to help people go round the world without much money!” she says with a smile. Usually my guests love trying it but I’ve had problems sometimes. Once I cooked roast lamb for a guest but unfortunately, when she got here, she told me she was only used to eating vegetables!”
The idea of travelling the world for free has even been made into a TV series. Alex and Zsolt from the US set out with no money at all. They relied on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter to ask for help. They say, “wherever we went we were always provided with food. Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)
“Peanuts! Get your red-hot peanuts!”
Americans have loved the crunchy taste of peanuts ever since 1870. That was the year when P.T. Barnum introduced hot peanuts as a snack. He sold them at his circus. Soon everyone wanted peanuts to eat.
But many people around the world ate peanuts long before that. Peanuts have been a popular food in Africa for hundreds of years. In South America, scientists found clay pots which were filled with dried peanuts. These pots were over 3,000 years old! Ancient dried peanuts have also been found in China.
African slaves (奴隶) probably brought peanuts to the USA in the 1700s. At first, farmers grew peanuts as food for their cows. But a man named George Washington Carver thought that peanuts could be useful in other ways. George was born during the Civil War (内战). His parents were slaves on a farm. From boyhood, George showed great interest in plants. Later, he got an education and began studying plants. He worked hard and became a famous botanist.
George used peanuts to create over three hundred products, such as soap, ink, plastic and paint. He also helped make peanuts an important crop. He was famous for his work. There is a monument (纪念碑) to him in Missouri where he was born.
The peanut plant produces many small yellow flowers. When the flowers die, their stems (茎) begin to dig into the soil in which peanuts grow. When the peanuts are ripe, it’s time to dig them out of the ground. The peanuts must be harvested at the right time. If the soil is too wet or too dry, many of the peanuts will remain stuck in the ground. After harvesting, peanuts are dried, then they are sent to factories where they are packaged as snacks or made into other products.
Next time you go to a circus or a baseball game, listen carefully. You may hear someone shouting, “Peanuts! Get your red-hot peanuts!”

I have been a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Dagligtale, since my first day here at the University of Alberta. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students, the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist, I have learned to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of asking people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative (负面的) feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything you can!

“A lot of people have it under their cell phone number,” she says. Soon we’re trying my office number, my husband’s cell and office numbers. “I don’t think you have a VIP card,” she says. “Ten percent off your purchase (购买) if you sign up today.”

“I think you already have every phone number I have,” I say.
“I need the one you want the account to use.”
I give her one, an act of pure surrender (投降).
Between the two-for-one deal and the 10 percent off, I saved $11.4 on my total purchase. The woman hands me my change, and I can almost taste the freedom. Here are some examples. Let’s take a look.
Lip reading machines
They can not only read faces. They can also read your lip movements. The Chinese Internet company Sogou has made lip reading technology. You don’t need to speak aloud. The machine turns your lip movements into voice or text. This could be very useful if you are in a noisy place and people cannot hear you on your phone. Police can also use this technology. Sometimes they see criminals on city-monitoring cameras, but they don’t know what they say. The lip reading technology can help people with this.

The train pulled into the station at 8:05 p.m. on time, just as the schedule required, and the excellent Dr. Twill rushed to the train exit door and jumped onto the platform with a crowd of other travelers. He was tired from his long journey on the train(伸懒腰) and yawned (打哈欠), and decided to find a hot cup of coffee before heading out to enjoy the bright city night.
His trip through the nearby county towns had been a rewarding one: with a few short explanations here, some attractive promises there, and a great deal of excitement everywhere he went, he had been able to sell a number of his electrical cures at prices which made him more money than he had expected, and returned with a much lighter truck and fatter wallet than those with which he had departed. The cures were many and various, ranging from electrical hair brushes which promised to grow more hairs on a shiny bald head and give back a youthful and good-looking appearance, to electrical belts which were designed to reduce the fat around the belly(肚子), lose weight every hour and build strong muscles while watching TV on a sofa, even to electrical shoes, the function of which was still unclear but wonderful without questions.
He had even been able to get some rather big investments(投资)in the development of his latest cure: a bottle of magic water with pure electrical energy. When someone imbibes it, the whole health would improve, including his or her physical appearance of the body and the mind from within! Moreover, this magic water works on both humans and pets.
