When I was young, a friend and I came up with a “big” plan to make reading easy. The idea was to boil down great books to a sentence each. “Moby-Dick” by American writer Herman Melville, for instance, was reduced to: “A whale of a tale about the one that got away.” As it turned out, the joke was on us. How could a single sentence convey the essence (精髓) of a masterpiece with over five hundred pages
Blinkist, a website and an app, now summarizes nonfiction titles in the form of quick takes labeled “blinks.” The end result is more than one sentence, but not by much. Sarah Bakewell’s “At the Existentialist Café” is broken into 11 screens of information; Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” fills 13.
Blinkist has been around since 2012. It calls its summaries “15-minute discoveries” to indicate how long it takes to read a Blinkist summary. “Almost none of us,” the editors assure us, “have the time to read everything we’d like to read.” Well, yes, of course, “So many books, so little time,” declares a poster I once bought at a book market. But I judge the quality of someone’s library by the books he or she has yet to read.
That’s because a book is something we ought to live with, rather than speed through and categorize. It offers an experience as real as any other. The point of reading a book is not accumulating information, or at least not that alone. The most essential aspect is the communication between writer and reader. The idea behind Blinkist, however, is the opposite: Reading can be, should be, measured by the efficient uptake (吸收) of key ideas. No, no, no. What’s best about reading books is its inefficiency.
When reading a book, we need to dive in, let it take over us, demand something of us, teach us what it can. Blinkist is instead a service that changes books for people who don’t, in fact, want to read. A 15-minute summary misses the point of reading; speed-reading with the app isn’t reading at all.
6.What does the underlined part “the joke was on us” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.We were actually joking. B.We were laughed at by others.
C.We were underestimating ourselves. D.We were just embarrassing ourselves.

A.Positive. B.Negative C.Uncaring. D.Tolerant.
Robots in the art world are nothing new. In fact, for centuries, people have built robots as art objects — or simple machines that perform a series of movements — in ancient China and Japan. However, what’s different now is that artists and engineers are building robots that actually create art.
In 1973, British-born painter Harold Cohen wrote a computer program and called it AARON. At first, AARON only made simple outlines whose color and details Cohen would later add. Fifty years later, landscapes add just about anything else a human could paint. So can AARON be called an artist or creative In 2010, Cohen addressed these questions. He explained, “AARON can generate unlimited numbers of images.” So according to Cohen, the simple answer is yes — AARON is creative.
It’s not just paintings that robots are creating, though. Last year, a robot called Shimon released its first album on Spotify. Shimon began life as a simple robot marimba, however, it’s learned how to jam, write original songs and compose lyrics. Shimon does this by analyzing huge amounts of music-roughly 50,000 rock.
It may be cool to hear a song created by a robot, but is there any other reason to build robots that can play music According to Gil Weinberg, one of Shimon’s creators, he and his team “hope and believe that these new abilities would push human cooperators to new uncharted directions that could not be achieved in human-to-human cooperation.”
While questions about robots creating art are fun to think about, there are many other ways that robots can help artists in the way they create their works. For example, advancements in 3D-printing technology will allow artists to build more complex pieces for their sculptures.
11.What was AARON able to do at first
A.Paint people and landscapes.
B.Prepare basic outlines for Cohen.
C.Draw pictures of itself and Cohen.
D.Color paintings under Cohen’s instructions.
12.What does the article tell us about Shimon
A.It is both a marimba and guitar player.
B.It has created about 50,000 original songs.
C.It is expected to push humans to achieve more.
D.Its creators hope that it can outperform humans.
13.What does the author’s attitude towards robots that create art
A.Positive. B.Worried. C.Neutral. D.Doubtful.
14.What might be the biggest challenge of creating songs by a robot
A.Analyzing huge amounts of music.
B.Composing lyrics.
C.Playing guitar.
D.New abilities to new uncharted directions.
15.What could be the best title for the passage
A.AARON and Shimon
B.Robots in the Real World
C.Programmed Creativity
D.Advancements in Technology
There’s a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too that’s why it made Nov 16 “International Day for Tolerance”.
But first of all, what is tolerance French philosopher Voltaire (1694—1778) can give us some help. According to him, tolerance “is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other’s folly- -that is the first law of nature.”
Nobody’s perfect. When we’re tempted to criticize another person, we should perhaps remember our own imperfections first.
Very often, people don’t realize that they’re intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don’t put themselves in the shoes of women.
It’s worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we’re speaking here To agree to be “tolerant” of someone isn’t necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there’s something wrong with them.
But it seems wrong that people should agree to “tolerate” people with black skin, for example. And should women think they have received the respect they are due when men agree to “tolerate” them
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That’s the reason we should be tolerant.
It’s a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness. Bob Marley understood this. In the song mentioned above, he advised: “Write your love on a rock so it stays for eternity (永恒); write your hate in the sand so the waves will wash it away.”
16.What’s the purpose of the UN “International Day For Tolerance”
A.To arouse peoples awareness of tolerance among people.
B.To celebrate the founding of the UN.
C.To solve the problem of global community.
D.To change people’s opinions towards globalization.
17.According to Voltaire, tolerance is ________.
A.being willing to express your love to others
B.trying to overcome your imperfections
C.giving a hand to vulnerable groups (弱势群体)
D.accepting each other’s weaknesses
18.Why are people usually unaware of their intolerance, according to the article
A.They are used to finding faults.
B.They consider tolerance a kind of frailty.
C.They don’t see things from the angle of others.
D.They are intolerant of themselves too.
19.In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”
A.Humans are advised to treat others better. B.Humans learned to find faults in others.
C.Humans need to give something to others. D.Humans will change their attitudes to others.
20.What’s the text mainly about
A.The origin of the International Day of Tolerance.
B.The meaning and importance of tolerance.
C.The philosophy behind Bob Marley’s song.
D.Effective ways to show tolerance.
A recent study found that experiencing or even just anticipating uplifting events in daily life was related to feeling less depressed that same day. The study, conducted by Professor Lisa Starr at University of Rochester, found that a decrease in depression was especially marked when the experience included interpersonal uplifts, such as participating in fun activities with friends or family.
A number of laboratory-based studies suggest that the mood of people with depression is relatively unresponsive to positive stimuli(刺激物). In other words, when people with depression experience a positive event in the laboratory—like receiving a financial reward—their mood is unlikely to improve markedly. The issue here is that laboratory research doesn’t always translate to real-life settings.
The Rochester study is one of a growing number of studies examining how real life events with direct relevance to study participants affect their mood. The authors wanted to know if people with different levels of depression felt better when good things happened to them. The answer is simple—yes. The same is true for the expectation of good things to come.
The study included 157 young adults of whom two-thirds had mild, moderate, or severe depressive symptoms. The remaining third had no symptoms, allowing the authors to examine whether the level of depressive symptoms changes the way people respond to positive experiences. The study subjects completed a two-week online diary, tracking their mood as it related to recent and anticipated positive events in their lives—like time spent with friends, or exercising.
Those who reported higher levels of depressive symptoms at the beginning of the study, showed stronger associations between daily uplifts and lower daily depressive symptoms, particularly when the uplifts were interpersonal in nature.
“The findings have really important implications for treatment and are compatible with a treatment model called Behavioral Activation, which suggests that if you can help depressed people to engage in positive experiences—despite their low motivation to do so—their mood may improve,” says Starr. In other words: If you’re feeling seriously blue, make an effort to do something fun with friends.
21.What did the new study find
A.Sociable people are less likely to experience depression.
B.People with depression are good at predicting the future.
C.Every one of us experiences depression from time to time.
D.Positive social activities can reduce people’s depressive mood.
22.What can we learn about the positive stimuli of the Rochester study
A.They produced little effect. B.They were laboratory-based.
C.They were financial rewards. D.They were related to real-life events.
23.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.How the study was conducted. B.What the result of the study is.
C.What affects participants’ mood. D.How long the study took.
24.Which participants’ mood was most responsive to daily uplifts
A.Those with no depressive symptoms.
B.Those with mild depressive symptoms.
C.Those with severe depressive symptoms.
D.Those with moderate depressive symptoms.
25.What does the underlined word “compatible” in the last paragraph mean
A.Unrelated. B.Consistent. C.Comfortable. D.Popular.
