The spring break, as the name suggests, mentions the custom among American schools, colleges and universities to give their students a full week off from their studies at some time during the spring season. The dates of the spring break will vary from school to school. Some schools time their breaks to fit in with the Easter weekend, allowing students to go home for that important holiday, while others time the spring break for St. Patrick's Day.
While some college students might indeed use their spring breaks to catch up on their studies or to spend time with their families, many others travel to resorts (度假胜地), in or out of the United States, in order to get together with their friends, sometimes on occasions that involve a great deal of drinking and public disorder. For many years, Fort Lauderdale, Florida was a popular destination for students from all over the country, until local residents said no to the damage caused by the students. The same case occurred in popular Daytona Beach, Florida.
Many American communities still turn a blind eye to the disruption (破坏), however, since spring break traffic is an important factor in the local economy, despite the fact that most college students are under the minimum legal drinking age of 21. Tour companies provide special discounted spring break packages for the students to Mexico or countries of the Caribbean. These countries often have a lower minimum drinking age than the United States or are more tolerant of underage drinking.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Students have spring breaks to celebrate the Easter.
B. Not all schools have spring breaks.

D. American students in different schools may have spring breaks at different times.
2. Local residents in Fort Lauderdale, Florida didn't welcome students from all over the country, because _____.
A. none of the students made good use of the spring break
B. students caused trouble during the spring break
C. they didn't want to join in with students
D. the spring break was mainly intended for local college students
3. From the underlined words in the last paragraph we know that _____.
A. American communities respect the students' choices
B. many American communities obey the law because the spring break is a legal holiday
C. making money from the tourism is more important for many American communities
D. the damage caused by students is never worth paying attention to
B
Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi'an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code(二维码). "We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate the codes, and in the end everything gets easier," said Guo. "When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their homework anywhere using my computer or cellphone."
The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans his students' QR codes, their homework appears on his cellphone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo's students like the new way and think it is interesting. "We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun," said Tingting, a student of Guo's.
"The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share," Guo said. "It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don't want my students to fall behind the times."
However, some parents are worried. They are frightened that their children will spend too much time surfing the Internet and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it's unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the codes when they hand in their homework, which doesn't take up too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students' homework at any time. And it's also an easy way to share homework with other students.
1. What makes Mr. Guo special as a teacher
A. He doesn't give students homework after his class.
B. He asks his students to hand in homework in a new way.
C. He gives his students much creative homework after class.
D. He teaches on WeChat, instead of in the traditional classroom.
2. _____ can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ and WeChat.
A. The QR codes B. The homework
C. The examination results D. The teachings
3. How do the students do their homework now
A. More quickly. B. More honestly.
C. More creatively. D. More easily.
4. The writer thinks the new way _____.
A. is not really necessary B. has more disadvantages
C. does not work well for teachers D. will benefit both teachers and students
C
A Kenyan teacher who gave away most of his monthly salary to poor people has won the Global Teacher Prize and one million dollars.
In 2016, Peter Tabichi came to Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, a public school, in faraway Kenya's Rift Valley. The school had just a single computer and had problems connecting to the Internet. It had no library or laboratory. To make matters worse, the students came from poor families where basics like food and clothing were hard to come by. While these difficulties would have caused most people to leave quickly, Tabichi stayed.
Realizing that starving kids make for poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80 percent of his monthly salary to buy food and learning objects for them. He set up a science club to get kids interested in the topic. "Our laboratory does not have everything, but I encourage them to think wider and use what we can get locally."
Tabichi and other four teachers regularly visit low-achieving, at-risk students at their homes to provide one-on-one help and to understand the difficulties these children face daily. Tabichi also encourages parents to allow girls to continue their high-school education.
Tabichi's efforts have made a difference. The school registration has more than doubled to almost 400 now since he came. In 2017, 16 of the 59 graduating students went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26. In 2017, five students qualified (有权) for the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). This year, two other students will compete in the 2019 Intel ISEF to be held in Phoenix, Arizona.
The teacher, however, owes his success to his students, saying, "I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything. As would be expected, Tabichi plans to spend the prize money on his school community.

Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three minutes extra at a family mealtime could help prevent child obesity. Research found that among poor families, the extra minutes at mealtimes made great improvement of a normal weight for the youth. The factors are likely to be communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr. Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.” The researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the effects of factors and mealtime behaviors of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have an obese child. Similarly, families, who talked more together and interacted more positively during the meal were more likely to have healthy-weight children.
Teaching low-income families how to make the most of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr. Fiese said, “This is something we can target and teach,” She added, “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their sometimes complex living arrangements that may challenge their abilities to plan ahead and arrange a single time to communicate with each other. ”
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor access to healthy food But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children's weight. Dr. Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible. ”
1.According to the passage, to have a healthy-weight child, parents should .
A.limit the food for each meal B.increase their eating time

2.How much time is reasonable for one meal according to the passage
A.About 15 minutes. B.About 17 minutes.
C.About 20 minutes. D.About 30 minutes.
3.Why does a longer mealtime make a difference to a normal weight
A.Because people can have a good rest as they eat meals.
B.Because people can have time to choose what they like.
C.Because people can use mealtimes to do other things.
D.Because people can communicate more in the scheduled time.
4.What does Dr. Fiese suggest to us
A.Parents should not communicate during mealtimes.
B.It's better to add three to four extra minutes to one meal.
C.Four meals a day will make a difference to the children's weight.
D.Twenty extra minutes per meal can make a healthy weight.

第二节 (满分25分)
I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren't all that excited about getting any work done, and the experience was extremely stressful.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it.
"Let's pick Hawaii!" said Cupcake. "Hawaii has super cute swimsuits."
"That is so true!" said Cookie. "Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer sales happening right now."
"Really Maybe my mom will take me shopping this weekend," said Cupcake.
I turned to Volcano. "Which state do you think we should pick "
Volcano shrugged (耸肩). "I don't care. But what happened to your hair, Arizona It looks like it got caught in a blender (搅拌机) !" The rest of Volcano's comments during the meeting were equally "helpful".
At our next group meeting, no one seemed very eager to talk about our brochure, so I went ahead and shared the interesting facts I'd learned about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one said anything, so I pulled out my notebook. "Cupcake, you had offered to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. Were you able to find some "
"I didn't have time," she answered, "but here's a photo of me at the hotel pool in Hawaii." I looked at the picture she had taped in her notebook and smiled. "You look great, but you probably don't count as sea life. Cookie, you were going to find some historical information. And Volcano, you were in charge of Hawaiian geography, right "
"I'll do my part soon," said Cookie. "I've been really busy lately."
"Me, too. I've been really busy!" said Volcano.
I was getting the impression that no one but me planned to work on the brochure. "What am I going to do Do I have to do all the work for everyone if I don't want a bad grade "

第二节
答案:
As we set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed out. "What's going on " she asked. "No one else in my group is doing any work," I told her. "So I thought that the only way to get the brochure done is to do it myself." "Well," my mom said with a smile. "First of all, I think you should talk with your group about your concerns in a friendly way. Secondly, you should do the best job you can on your part of the assignment." After hearing my mother's words, I was lost in thought.
And at our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. "Since we're working as a team, we're all relying on each other to do the best we can," I told them. "If anyone is having trouble, maybe we can talk about solutions together." Surprisingly, Cupcake, Cookie, and Volcano all ended up doing their share. They didn't necessarily do things the way I would have, but I guess that's the deal with group projects.
