Bria Neff, at age 11, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was named a winner of the 2018 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. Each year, the Barron Prize celebrates 25 outstanding young people from across North America who have made a huge positive difference to people and the environment.
Bria founded "Faces of the Endangered" to protect endangered species through the sale of her artwork. She has sold over 250 paintings of endangered animals and given away more than $ 33, 000 to animal conservation(保护)groups. Bria has also published two educational coloring books; income helps support the zoo's endangered species. She uses her website to present the challenges facing endangered animals, inspiring followers in 48 countries.
Bria began her work at the age of 8, when she won an art competition hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. She carefully researches each animal before painting it. "I hope I can inspire kids like me to believe they can do great things," says Bria.
The Barron Prize was founded in 2001 by author T. A. Barron and was named after his mother, Gloria Barron. Each year 25 Barron Prize winners show the great diversity of America. When the campus of Shekou International School (SIS) is still kept shut because of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching activities at the school have been resumed(重新开始) online since Feb.3, 2020.
The school is using popular apps and software for online learning. Video conferencing and office automation are used to help teachers keep track of students' conditions and communicate with their workmates across the world. Teaching online also offers a new experience to the teachers to update their teaching methods and to step out of their comfort zones.
Staying in Phuket, Thailand, science teacher Riley Laird records videos on a 10-year-old green sea turtle named Marlin and the local turtle sanctuary(收养所) as part of the online classes on ecosystems for Grade 7 students. "I want to connect our learning with the reality. The sanctuary sends us updates on the turtles, health and progress. They say that Marlin is likely to be released into the sea in mid-June," says Laird.
Rebecca Wallace is a Grade 4 teacher at the school, staying in her mother's home in New York. From 8 p.m. to midnight every day, she starts teaching mathematics and arts to her students living in various time zones. Though teaching nearly around the clock, Wallace says that she is getting to know the students better in terms of their homes, family and even pets.
Greg Smith, head of SIS, names the online teaching period "new normal" at the school. "Students are now more skillful at using technology than before. They see that communication is the most powerful part of being an effective learner and can use the tools to shrink distance and time. The 'new normal' will offer more opportunities of connecting to the world and more focuses on creating real solutions," he says.
According to the school, 68% of its students are staying in Shenzhen while 27% of them are staying abroad for the epidemic.

With the development of our society, cellphones have become a common part in our lives. Have you ever run into a careless cellphone user in the street Maybe they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new "species" of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name—phubbers (低头族).
Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cellphone while letting his patient die. A pretty woman takes a selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site. And a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events will finally lead to the destruction(毁灭) of the world.
Although the ending of the film sounds unrealistic, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and the result of it. "Always bending your head to check your cellphone could damage your neck," Guangming Daily quoted doctors' words. "The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching." Also, staring at cellphones for a long time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that's not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. When getting together with family or friends, many people prefer to play their cellphones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cellphones in broad daylight.
1. Why does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragraph 2
A. To suggest phubbers will destroy the world.
B. To call for people to go walking without phones.
C. To tell people the bad effects of phubbing.
D. To advise students to create more cartoons like this.
2. According to the passage, what risks may a phubber have
① Destructing the world.
② Affecting his social skills.
③ Damaging his neck and eyesight.
④ Getting separated from his friends and family.
A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②③④
3. What's the author's attitude towards phubbing
A. Supportive. B. Confident. C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned.
4. What will be talked about in the following paragraph
A. Ways to avoid the risks of phubbing. B. Bad effects of phubbing.
C. Daily life of phubbers. D. Behaviours of phubbers.

This story happened to me many years ago, but I can still remember it well. When I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, there was one occasion when I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for New Year. On my way, I found that my car was running out of gas. So I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash counter, I said hello to a couple who were also paying for gas and they responded with their warm smiles.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. My car just broke down. What big trouble! I stopped and was wondering what I should do next when a car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken with at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted happily on the way to the city, and when I arrived and got off the car, the husband gave me his business card.
Upon arriving home, I wrote a thank-you note to the couple for their help. Soon afterwards, I received a New Year present from them. In their note they said that helping me had made their holidays more meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in an early morning. Road conditions were quite poor on the way and it was said that cars broke down frequently there. Anyway, I got there safe and sound. After the meeting, I returned to my car and found that I'd got a flat tire(瘪了的轮胎). I was at a loss when I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling Ford cars ——was right next door. I walked over and found two workers in the showroom.

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Jack,
You have asked for my advice about how to get along with friends and it is my pleasure to give you my suggestions.
First, when your friends are upset, you can calm them down and try to help them solve problems. What's more, you should be concerned about your friends rather than ignore them. Last but not least, when your friends disagree with you, it will be a good idea to communicate with them face to face. When they help you, you should be grateful to them.
These are my personal suggestions, and I hope they will be helpful to you. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
I entered the shop and found the two workers happened to be the couple. They were the owners of the Friendly Ford dealership. What a great surprise that they appeared in front of me when I had trouble! I stared at them in disbelief for a second. At the same time, they recognized me and gave me a big hug. "Why are you here " They asked with a puzzled expression. I told them that I got a flat tire nearby. Knowing what had happened to me, they said that they would be glad to give me a hand again.
Paragraph 2:
After a while, the couple quickly drove a pick-up truck to my car. Once again, they solved my trouble. Then, they told me that after receiving my thank-you note, they felt that the true happiness came from helping others. To help more people who came across troubles on this road, they ran this shop to sell cars and help those unlucky guys as well. I couldn't than enough. Many years have passed, but I'll never forget the lesson the couple taught me: Life is meaningful when you can give a hand to those in trouble.
