A
Each year, hundreds of thousands of wild animals around the world are killed in trophy hunting—the organised shooting of animals for pleasure. The hunters then bring parts of the animal home with them as their "trophy" to remember the hunting.
Trophy hunters pay big money to kill animals. Some of the money goes to helping wildlife protection. Trophy hunting also attracts business, which encourages people to preserve land and breed (饲养) animals that would otherwise be endangered. Cathy Dean, head of the Save the Rhino Charity, says that at the start of the 1900s there were only 50 - 100 southern white rhinos. Now, there are around 18,000. This is partly because some of them were raised specially for trophy hunting.
But things don't usually go on one way. According to WWF, elephant populations have fallen from 1.3 million to just over 400,000 since the 1980s. Over the same period, hunters from around the world have taken home more than 100,000 African elephant trophies. Trophy hunting is not illegal but unfair on the animals. In 2015, Cecil the lion was shot by a US trophy hunter. Cecil was a beloved lion in Zimbabwe, Africa. Cecil was lured with bait (诱饵), shot with an arrow and struggled in blood for more than ten hours before his hunters tracked and finished killing him. His son, Xanda, met a similar fate two years later.
Cecil's death caused worldwide outrage and protests (反抗) against trophy hunting. Countries including Australia, France and the Netherlands banned(禁止) the import of lion trophies—they stop hunters from being allowed to bring home parts of the animal they kill. They believe that people will stop trophy hunting because the activity might lose its attraction if hunters can't bring their trophies home.
The UK government said that it would consider a ban on trophy-hunting imports by 2017, but no action had been taken. In April 2019, a letter by protesters against trophy hunting was sent to the UK government asking to ban trophy-hunting imports. On 7 May, the official in charge of the environment, Michael Gove, said that the UK would not ban the imports for the time being. This left the world in a state of shock. Hopefully the UK will place a ban on trophy-hunting imports, which would be an important message and inspire others to treat animals better. We're waiting for the day to come.

A Chinese college student cycles over 1,000 kilometres in 19 days to encourage environmental protection.
The college student from central China's Hubei Province cycled over 1,000 kilometres to Shanghai in 19 days to highlight the importance of environmental protection, receiving high praise from related departments.
Huang Xi's journey started on Aug. 3 from Xiaochang County, Hubei, spreading the message of environmental protection to over 5,000 people along his route. Huang said it was not very easy to start a conversation about environmental protection with strangers. "First you have to narrow the distance between you and your audience," he noted. For instance, he would greet people at the roadside and introduce himself and his plan. He told Shanghai Observer that the environmental issue was not a good conversation opener because not everyone was interested.
Straw burning(秸秆焚烧) was a major focus for Huang since his journey began in summer. "Many people don't burn straw because there's a fine, but not many of them know that burning straw actually pollutes the environment," he said.
Explaining the ban on straw burning, the benefits of sorting of waste as well as the importance of creatures in water and plants protection were the major part of his job on the road.
16 local authorities of environmental protection along Huang's route praised his efforts. "Environmental protection calls for not only governmental efforts but also social efforts," said Chen Bin, an official from Wuhan's environmental department.
Huang shared his experience on social media, which gave him a level of support on his journey. However, his cycling also drew the bad side of comments. Some said that his journey was only a publicity stunt (作秀), and some even said that in fact, it was a trip that Huang had to make since he ran out of his money at Internet cafes. Huang replied and tried to prove that what they said was not true.
Huang, who studies environmental engineering in college, set off again on Sept. 27 to take part in a training camp held by a centre of environmental protection in Hubei Province. "I will share my experience of the journey, and hope people will pay more attention to the environment," he said.
1. What is the purpose of Huang's cycling
A. To have a good sightseeing.
B. To receive high praise from related departments.
C. To let people know the importance of protecting environment.
D. To solve the problem of straw burning.
2. What can we learn from the text
A. Huang's cycling didn't draw any attention.
B. What Huang studies in college is related to environment.
C. Environmental protection needs only social efforts.
D. It's a good idea to start a conversation by environmental issues.
3. When did Huang finish the cycling
A. On Jul. 3. B. On Sep. 27. C. On Aug. 22 D. On Oct. 3.
4. What is the attitude of the related departments to the cycling
A. They think highly of it. B. They disagree with it.
C. They show no interest in it. D. They doubt it.

Plans to bring wild tigers back to their original home, their historical range (历史分布范围) in the Ili-Balkhash region, have been announced by Kazakhstan(哈萨克斯坦) and an agreement with World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) to conduct a tiger reintroduction programme has been signed. "It will not only bring wild tigers back to their original home, but also protect the unique ecosystem of the Ili-Balkhash region," said Askar Myrzakhmetov, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
If successful, Kazakhstan will be the first country in the world to bring wild tigers back to an entire region where they have died out for nearly half a century. Tiger reintroduction projects have only been achieved within national borders and in areas that are considered current tiger habitats. Kazakhstan's tiger reintroduction programme is unique and it badly requires the restoration of a vast forest that is part of the wild tigers historical range.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, wild tigers have lost over 90 percent of their historical range. Wild tigers have completely disappeared from the region since the late 1940s, due to the loss of habitat. To prepare for the return of wild tigers, on 1 st January 2021 Kazakhstan will set up a new nature reserve in the southwestern Ili-Balkhash, in order to restore the unique forest habitat. This will include the protection of existing wildlife, and reintroducing important prey (猎物), such as the endangered wild Bactrian deer.
Restoring tigers will also help protect Lake Balkhash and prevent it from repeating the fate of the Aral Sea, formerly the world's fourth largest lake and now 10 percent of its original size. "The hard work remains ahead of us. We have to spare no effort to make this region ready for tigers and involve all the relevant people to make this happen. That means dealing with illegal activities, having these people who govern parks be well trained and equipped, increasing prey populations and involving local communities," said Ekaterina Vorobyeva, Director of the WWF programme.
1. What is Askar Myrzakhmetov's attitude towards the tiger reintroduction programme
A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Concerned. D. Disapproving.
2. What made the wild tigers disappear in the Ili-Balkhash region
A. The increasing loss of prey. B. The evolution of the species.
C. The lack of natural living places. D. The serious environmental pollution.
3. Which measure may be taken for the reintroduction of tigers
A. Regulating human activities. B. Limiting the number of prey.
C. Building a reserve for tigers only. D. Training tigers to be more adaptable.
4. What is the best title of the passage
A. Efforts to Restore Forests in Kazakhstan
B. Bringing Tigers Back Home to Kazakhstan
C. Attempts to Handle Illegal Activities Effectively
D. Preventing Tigers Disappearing in Kazakhstan
D
The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organisations have started turning plastics into fabric(织物) to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic(合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers(下水道) and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organisations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental "solution". Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design—his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn't get a satisfying answer. Only one women's clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
1. What has happened during the past five years
A. Fabric has become much stronger. B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.
C. Many plastic wastes have been reused. D. Microfibers have been greatly improved.
2. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes
A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes.
B. It is worsening environmental problems.
C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer.
D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.
3. What can be inferred about Browned Benign by Design research project
A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn't got anything done.
C. It is known to very few people. D. It is facing some difficulties.
4. What's the best title for the text
A. It's Important to Learn to Recycle
B. It's Never Easy to Solve Pollution Problems
C. Recycled Plastic Clothing: Solution or Pollution
D. Are Human Beings Moving Forward or Backward

Once there was a merchant who had fine silk and rugs (毛毯) to sell. He wished to send his goods to a city on the other side of the desert.
Abdul, the merchant, owned a large caravan (商队) of camels, and he employed many men. For many days, Abdul and his men had been preparing for the journey because of the boundless desert with hot sand and the grass out of sight for miles. It required many camels to carry the merchant's goods, tents, bottles of water, firewood, bags of rice and some tools.
At last, the caravan was ready for the journey. The sun shone steadily, making the sand so hot that no one could walk upon it in the daytime. So Abdul and his men travelled all at night. One man was the pilot. He rode ahead because he knew the stars, and he could guide the caravan by them.
They travelled night after night, resting during the heat of the day. Unfortunately, when the caravan started another evening, the pilot led the way as usual, but after a while, weary with many nights of watching, he fell asleep.
All night long the caravan travelled. At daybreak the pilot awoke and looked at the last star fading in the morning light. "Halt (停下)!" he called, "The camels must have turned while I slept. We are at the place from which we started yesterday." Even worse, another man shouted, "The man with the camel carrying the rest water and firewood, who is walking at the end of our group, is gone!"
There was no water to drink. There was no firewood to cook the food. The men lay down with despair, "We are lost!"

A
The hunters then bring parts of the animal home with them as their 'trophy' to remember the hunting.(然后猎人把动物的一部分带回家作为他们的'战利品'来纪念这次狩猎。)"
Trophy hunting is not illegal but unfair on the animals."
This left the world in a state of shock. Hopefully the UK will place a ban on trophy-hunting imports, which would be an important message and inspire others to treat animals better. We're waiting for the day to come.(这让全世界大为震惊。英国将有望禁止战利品狩猎进口,这将是一个重要的信息,并将激励其他人更好地对待动物。我们在等待那一天的到来。)"可知,对于英国政府的决定,作者感到震惊和不满意。delighted高兴的;disappointed失望的;approved赞同的;positive肯定的。故选B。
B
答案:1-4.CBCA
解析:1.推理判断题。根据第二段中的"The college student from central China's Hubei Province cycled over 1,000 kilometres to Shanghai in 19 days to highlight the importance of environmental protection"可知,黄曦骑自行车的目的是让人们知道保护环境的重要性。故选C。
Huang, who studies environmental engineering in college"可知,黄曦在大学所学的专业与环境有关。故选B。
A Chinese college student cycles over 1,000 kilometres in 19 days to encourage environmental protection.(一名中国大学生在19天内骑行1,000多公里,以鼓励环保。)" Huang Xi's journey started on Aug. 3 from Xiaochang County (黄曦于 8 月3日从孝昌县出发)"可推知,黄曦是在8月22 日完成的自骑行。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据第六段中的"16 local authorities of enironmental protection along Huang's route praised his efforts. 'Environmental protection calls for not only governmental efforts but also social efforts,'..." 故选A。
C
答案:1.B; 2.C; 3.A; 4.B
It will not only bring wild tigers back to their original home, but also protect the unique ecosystem of the Ili-Balkhash region"可以看出,Askar Myrzakhmetov 认为重新引进老虎项目不仅能将野生老虎带回原来的家,而且还能保护Ili-Balkhasli地区独特的生态环境'也就是说,Askar Myrzakhmetov很赞同这个项目,认为它意义重大。
Wild tigers have completely disappeared from the region since the late 1940s, due to the loss of habitat." The lack of natural living places(缺少自然的居住地)"与文章内容一致。故选C。
That means dealing with illegal activities..." 故选A。
Bringing Tigers Back Home to Kazakhstan"与文章主旨一致。
During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organisations have started turning plastics into fabric (织物) to deal with plastic pollution."
He explains that every time synthetic (合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers(下水道) and finally end up in the sea."
When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design... Browne didn't get a satisfying answer."
It also means taking special steps to protect the environment." Here's a four-step guide to being green.(这里有个关于环保的四步指南。)" 故选A。
For instance, a shorter shower means you used less water and less fuel"可知,较短的淋浴意味着你用更少的水和燃料,故G项"When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth.(当你少用一些东西时,你就对地球做了一件好事。)"
For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop (篮圈), why not give it to another family who has a little kid "可知,如果你的弟弟长大了,对塑料篮圈失去了兴趣,为什么不把它送给另一个有小孩的家庭呢 故B项"Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might.(很多时候,即使你不再需要某样东西,别人也可能需要。)"
Go for a hike, visit local nature centres and gardens, and climb up mountains." You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city.(你可以从参观城市当地的自然美景开始。)"
⑤根据本空前的"...take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden "可知,看一下你的后院里有没有地方种一棵树或建一个小的果蔬园,此处承接上文,故F项"You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow.(你可以骄傲地看着你的树生根发芽,看着园子里的植物生长。)"

Dear Sir,
Recently, a survey has been carried out in our school whether the freshmen have adapted to the life in senior high school.
60% of the students think that life in senior high school is not relaxing. Firstly, the subjects they are learning now are obviously more difficult. Besides, they have to do endless homework after class, which leaves them little time for exercise and other activities.
Others say they quite adapt to the new life and begin to enjoy it. They say that they find the courses are more interesting and the activities are more colourful, which benefits them a lot.
As far as I'm concerned, we should balance our study and other activities.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
It seemed that only one person remained positive. It's Abdul, who thought, "If we sit around with despair, all will be lost. I must find water." He started watching the ground closely. Hours later, a tuft of grass was finally seen. He ran back calling, "Bring the e quickly!" The pilot ran with him to where the grass was growing. They began to dig, and soon they struck a rock. Abdul put his ear close to the rock. "Water!" he cried, "I hear water running!"
A shout of joy burst from the lips of the men. In excitement, they struck the rock again and again. At last, the rock broke and water flowed out. They drank the water eagerly, and afterwards led the camels to the spring. In the evening, the men continued on their journey. On the way, they accidentally found the man and the camel that were lost because they were too tired to follow. Finally, they reached the city the very next day.
