Four teenage girls from Minnesota, US spent 120 hours of non-stop togetherness. No cellphones. This is not a reality show, but an adventure journey.
"It was really perfect," said Julia Ruelle of her recent adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with three of her childhood friends. "By unplugging, we had an amazing time."
Last year, Julia Ruelle, the 16-year-old girl, took part in an essay contest and carried off a prize. The award was a 5-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. So Julia invited her friends Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson and Julianna Torelli.
The four Minnetonka High School students arrived in Ely for training the day before they began the journey. They set out the next day at 7 am, quickly developing a routine.
"We were done paddling by noon," Julia said. "We ate lunch at the campsites and then it was time for hammocks (吊床), reading, making friendship bracelets(手链) and talking."
The girls all had some experience in the outdoors before. Anna had been to the Boundary Waters with her family. "I love how you are separated from everything in your life, especially technology," Anna said. Without her phone, she said, "I'm less worried about things." Madeline, too, had been to the Boundary Waters a few years back. "But this time, I had to paddle right and set up camp," she said. The girls made fire and cooked meal together. No one was ever hungry or homesick, but they were nervous the final night as they waited out a thunderstorm. They left wet sleeping bags in one tent, and squeezed into another for the night. "Every thunderstorm in the Boundary Waters feels huge," Julia said.
On the car ride home, they were all on their phones catching up with friends. "It was a little at a loss turning my phone on," said Anna. "Mental health can be improved so much in the Boundary Waters. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself."

Haley Curfman, 25, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, is a teacher at Blackwell Public School and last year she bought a plain(朴素的) white dress, which she set up a station in her classroom for her students to decorate, encouraging them to go and draw on the dress whenever they had free time. Haley set up a station at a table with the dress and some coloured markers so that her students could draw on it, having first seen the idea on Pinterest.
After the kids had finished the design, she then surprised them all by wearing the dress to class and sharing pictures of herself in it in a post that has since been shared over 200,000 times.
For teachers looking to do something similar for their own students, Haley said that she bought the dress on Amazon for less than $20 about six months ago and pre-washed the dress before she started the project. She used markers from Walmart. But she said these things can be bought in other places. She said, "To do the project, I set up a station at a table with the dress and markers. It takes anywhere from two weeks to a month to complete as we just work on it here and there when time allows. You'd better give the students enough time so they don't have to hurry."
"Teachers have been sharing their dresses, T-shirts etc. with me that they've been creating since the 1950s with the same idea. It is amazing, and I love the fact that you are sharing them with me! Thank you all so much for your kindness and support," she wrote on Facebook.
Asked why she came up with the idea, Haley told Scary Mommy, "We don't have art in our school, so, I always try to do little creative projects when possible."

I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for superpowers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had extraordinary powers.
There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically transport us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would otherwise never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them.
It was even shocking that my teacher could see the invisible. I was one of those who lacked insight. Yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another superpower and even after four decades, I could still vividly remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers, expanding our horizons. She did this even though her major was not art, nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. I knew I wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with superpowers that made children feel safe and valued.
I know being a teacher isn't the easiest or the most financially rewarding among jobs. And there are occupational risks—your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school staircase and your voice can give in from too much talking. But despite all that, there are those choosing this cause. To them, teaching is not just a job—it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment.
All my life, for three decades now, I've gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Occasionally, I meet my former students. Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who thirst for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometres each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.

Letting me move into my university dormitory wasn't an easy decision for my parents. However, they knew if I wanted a good education, I'd have to live away from home. I'd always dreamt of living alone the life of no rules and regulations and being independent. So I was delighted about this new stage in my life.
Unexpectedly, during the first few months of living alone, I would find myself crying every day. I would call my mum every day. Coming from a big family, I was used to noises surrounding me. Therefore, the scary silence at night was the worst. I couldn't even sleep without keeping the lights on.
As time went by, I started enjoying the freedom that came with living alone. I could do things in my own time: eat whenever I want, wake up whenever I want. The space of loneliness was also then filled up with friends who became like family, so I started missing my family less.
When it was time to say goodbye and go back home after my graduation I was bittersweet. I'd enjoyed my time alone, learning things which wouldn't have been possible if I had never moved away from home. But I'd also missed my family too much.
I'd learnt a lot from this experience. Living alone made me value family time even more. I realised every second with them was important though I might not get the freedom while living alone.
I guess it's different for everybody, but for me, there is no warmth in a house unless it's filled with loving members and people you love.
1. How did the author feel before moving into the university dormitory
A. Sad. B. Happy. C. Nervous. D. Cold.

B. He didn't enjoy his time alone.

3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The author felt cold living in school.
B. The authors dormitory was the warmest place.
C. The author felt warm living with his beloved ones.
D. Everyone felt warm when living with his beloved ones.
4. What does the author want to tell us
A. Family is the most important place in people's life.
B. As time goes by, people can get used to what happened.
C. People can find freedom only when they leave their family.
D. People need to grow up on their own, but family plays an important role.

It was an art lesson. Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates busy preparing the water jars and paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch everything for her. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do art!
Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookstand. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor.
How clumsy(笨拙的)! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman's hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn't in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid that she would spill (溅出) it.
"But would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold medicine " asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once. "But Mrs. Willow's house is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to come in, you'd better say no." Rachel sighed and ran out.
Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited her in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother's warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in. She looked round Mrs. Willow's sitting room and saw at once why Mum had been worried.

Participants are expected to give an English speech on a given topic and then answer some questions related to your speech. The top three will be awarded prizes. Since I know you are willing to show yourself, I am expecting you to come to participate in the competition. For further information, you can visit our school website or contact me.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
