第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Like many, I felt pressure from my parents and teachers to go to university and study something academic. With top grades I received at the end of high school, I was almost able to enter any course of my pick. Yet the thought of spending the next few years facing the four walls of a classroom caused a lump(肿块) in my throat.
After a year majoring in photography at university, which was not just what I expected, I made the decision to take a break and go on a gap year. In fact, I gained more knowledge in the real world in four months than I did from my entire schooling, but most importantly, I learnt so much about myself.
One day, my posted photos were noticed by Topdeck Travel, and they asked if they could use some of my travel pictures for their posters. This really was the beginning of my career. I began developing my relationship with Topdeck Travel, and before long, I got my first paid travelling overseas to take photographs.
Soon I reached the point where I had to make a decision—either to play it safe, go back to university and settle down like everyone else, or to follow my heart and go my own way—a path with an uncertain future. I chose the latter, and it was the scariest and best decision I have ever made.
Five years after leaving school, I might not have a university degree, a well-paid job, a husband or a house with a white fence. Instead, I'm sitting at my office, with a cafe by a beach at Goa, India. As I stare past my laptop screen at the sun setting beyond the waves, a salty breeze touches my face.
To me, success is about pursuing my dreams and creating my own path instead of trying to follow someone else's. Somehow, I feel like my life is exactly where it is meant to be.

B. She gets less knowledge in the real world.
C. She feels quite satisfied with her present life.
D. She misses the days working for Topdeck Travel.

Theodore Roosevelt was one of America's most physically fit presidents. "While in the White House I always tried to get a couple of hours' exercise in the afternoons—sometimes tennis, more often riding, or else a cross-country walk," he wrote. The president believed "the energetic life", as he called it, helped him to be a better person and a better president.
The president's love for the energetic life began when he was a boy growing up in New York City in the 1860s. He was a sickly child and often ill. "Nobody seemed to think I would live," Roosevelt recalled.
Encouraged by his father, Roosevelt began lifting weights when he was 12 years old. The next year, Roosevelt's mother took him to a gym for boxing(拳击) lessons. He described himself as "a painfully slow and awkward pupil". But even though he had little ability, Roosevelt always showed a lot of interest in sports. He worked hard at exercising his body.
Roosevelt stood 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 124 pounds as a freshman at Harvard College. A classmate described him as "a youth in the kindergarten stage of development". Yet Roosevelt continued boxing, and in his junior year, he competed in Harvard's annual boxing championship. He finished in second place.
Roosevelt entered politics after college. In 1901,42-year-old Roosevelt became the youngest president ever. And just because he was a world leader, he saw no reason to give up energetic or risky sports.
The president invited young military officers to the White House to box and wrestle (摔跤). In one boxing match, Roosevelt's opponent(对手) hit him in the left eye, causing an injury that eventually blinded that eye. He kept the injury secret for many years.

Who doesn't want to live life in style Life is like a road on which you never get a chance to return, and is not a very long road either. So we should try to live life to the fullest and enjoy every bit of it.
Every individual has unique likings and preferences, and all of us try to live the lives that suit us best. The world is like a painting cloth on which different people with different races, different languages, and different cultural backgrounds interact. But among these, the arts provide an easy and natural way for people to connect.
People with a knack for the arts usually discover it in childhood. But art isn't only for the talented; it can help everyone grow. Those with a strong artistic background are often more energetic, and more successful in all fields of life. Art widens the range of a person's life.
Painting is one of the most popular art forms. Those who are interested in taking it up as a career need to go through extensive training to get familiar with the various styles. Professional painters often host art exhibitions, with art lovers from all over the world coming to see and buy their creations. Sometimes the paintings are sold at high prices.
Performing arts are equally popular and admired. Dance, instrumental music, drama and so on require unusual artistic talent as well as a long period of education and training before audiences start to applaud the performances. But anyone with some artistic sense can make art part of his/her life, and benefit from it.

When Oliver Sacks, 82, died on August 30 at his home in New York City, the world was saddened by the loss of a brilliant neurologist(神经学者) and a truly beautiful mind.
London-born Sacks was most famous for his writing. A Forbes obituary(讣告) calls him "One of the greatest writers of science of the past 50 years. Maybe the greatest."
In his best-selling 1985 book, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Sacks described a man who could not tell the difference between his wife's face and his hat, because his brain had difficulty telling what he saw.
In 2006, Discover magazine ranked it among the 25 greatest science books of all time, declaring, Lots of neuroscientists now looking into the mysteries of the human brain cite this book as their greatest inspiration.
His 1973 book, Awakenings, is about a group of patients who were frozen in a decades-long sleep until Sacks tried a new treatment. The book led to a 1990 movie in which Sacks was acted by Robin Williams. It was nominated(提名) for three Academy Awards.
Another book, An Anthropologist on Mars, published in 1995, described cases like that of a painter who lost his colour vision in a car accident but found new creative power in black-and-white images. Sacks also wrote the story of a 50-year-old man who suddenly regained sight after nearly a lifetime of blindness. The experience was a disaster. The man's brain could not make sense of the visual world. After a full and rich life as a blind person, he became "a very disabled and miserable(悲惨的) sighted man", Sacks wrote. "When he went blind again, he was rather glad of it."
Despite the drama and unusual stories, Sacks' books were not meant to be freak shows. "Oliver Sacks humanises illness... he writes of body and mind, and from every one of his case studies there shows a feeling of respect for the patient and for the illness, "Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, said in 2001.
When Sacks received the Lewis Thomas Prize for science writing in 2002, the citation(荣誉状) declared,
"Sacks presses us to follow him into unknown areas of human experience and forces us to realise, once there, that we are facing only ourselves."

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.
As was expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, "Er... What... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future "
I was silent for a moment playing with the cell phone. I kept thinking, "Should I tell him my true thoughts What if he gets angry What if I let him down " Later I replied, "Well, I want to be a writer."
I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But surprisingly, "Interesting idea!" he answered. I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation.
"Are you serious, Dad "
"Well, you need confidence and good reparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it's late. Let's take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (螃蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more."
Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn't talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.
There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. "Let's see if we get lucky," he said, picked up a web basket with a rope tied and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, and then my father stood up and said, "Give me a hand with this," and we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck.
To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.
Paragraph 1:
At that moment, my father pointed to the cage, "Look at that crab, there!" _______________________

Last week, on his way to school, Li Lei saw an old woman lying on the ground. He sent her to the hospital immediately and the woman was saved.
Therefore, I strongly recommend Li Lei as "the most beautiful student".
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua

At that moment, my father pointed to the cage, "Look at that crab, there!" Staring at the crab, I found that every time he wanted to escape, he was pulled back into the cage. However, he didn't give up his fight. Fortunately, he survived from the struggle eventually. Shocked and amazed, I suddenly understood why my father had suggested catching crabs that morning. I thought the future would be filled with many possibilities. Everyone would need to find out what he enjoyed and held on to it.
From that day on, I was determined to make my dream come true. Besides my devotion to schoolwork, I spent all my spare time making full preparations for becoming a writer. Reading, collecting materials and writing made my life busy but fulfilled, which laid a good foundation for me. Meanwhile, I contributed to literary journals. Gradually, some achievements as a writer increased my confidence. I always think of the crab whenever faced with difficulties. What my father said also encouraged me on my way to success. Now I am grateful for sticking to the thing I truly dreamed of.
