第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
There is a day every year that most people look forward to because of a cake, balloons, presents and sometimes a party. Yes, this is your birthday. A "birthday" is described as the name given to the date of the annual event of a person's birth. It is a global tradition for people to celebrate this specific day.
In the beginning, people did not have birthday celebrations, because people did not keep very good birth records. They weren't even sure what year they were born in. And when people started to celebrate the birthday, there was no tradition of bringing gifts, and guests attending the birthday celebrations would bring good wishes for the birthday person. However, if a guest did bring gifts it was considered to be a good sign for the person of honour. Later, flowers became quite popular as birthday gifts.
Nowadays, different cultures have their own birthday celebrations. In Chinese culture, elders and family members gather around the one-year-old child and bring objects such as books, dolls and coins. It is believed that the child's future career will depend on the object that he or she picks. The Chinese consider a child a year old at birth. In Japan, people's 3rd, 5th, and 7th birthdays are the most important, because they will get to participate in the annual Seven-Five-Three Festival. Participants usually visit shrines (神殿) to show thanks for their health and strength.
Some in Britain still practice an ancient way of celebrating birthdays by placing thimbles (顶针) and coins in the cake. The person who gets the coin will be wealthy and the one who gets the thimble will never marry. Ireland has a funny way of celebrating birthdays. It is believed that it is for good luck that a child is lifted upside down and gets "bumped (撞)" on the floor! These bumps will depend on how old the child is. An extra bump is also added for good luck.

In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. "Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money," I said, "then well buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."
I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. "Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.
"You can't eat flowers,"—It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.
"But Mrs Sherlock," came the begging voice, "we want flowers."
Defeated finally, I put a pot of "funny" purple mums in the cart full of foods. "She'll like this one." The children agreed.
An organization had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying "Thanks." — much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another's life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.
1. What does the story mainly tell us
A. Everyone has the power to change the world. B. Acts of kindness can change someone's life.

A. Mothers. B. Teachers. C. Flowers. D. Gifts.
3. Why did the author consider the mums "funny"
A. Because she thought they were too ugly.
B. Because she thought they were for children.
C. Because she thought they were too expensive.
D. Because she thought they couldn't help people in need.
4. What can we know from the passage
A. The old woman preferred food to flowers.
B. Flowers are more important than food to the poor.
C. The old woman's dark day was brightened by the children.
D. All the money the children earned was transformed to food.
C
Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, and the leaders of a group of girls' schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls' Day School Trust( GDST), will tell the group that sport can help girls deal with failure.
"All girls, not just the sporty ones, should take physical exercise", Ms Fraser says. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms Fraser will tell the group that she supports "sport for all" That's why I love it when our schools have A,B, C and D teams and beyond," she says.
The GDST draws on research from the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion (比例) of boys, the research suggests.
Ms Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who once was a skater and tennis player, and former head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who once was in the French national swimming team. Ms Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis and Katherine Grainger are excellent role models for young women but says women's sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, former head of Sheffield High School for Girls, part of the GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. "Not everyone wants to be out playing hockey (曲棍球)," said Ms Dunsford.
1. Which of the following ideas would Ms Fraser agree with
A. Boys are born to be sport lovers. B. Girls are less confident than boys.
C. More should be done to make girls do sports. D. Those taking part in sport are always successes.
2. What's the proportion of boys never taking exercise
A. 1/10. B. 1/4. C. 1/5. D. 2/5.
3. Ms Fraser mentions those famous women to show _______.
A. hard work will pay off B. it's difficult to be great
C. sport will help girls succeed D. it's necessary to balance work and sport
4. What's the purpose of the text
A. To explain the key to success. B. To show the importance of sport.
C. To introduce more games to girls. D. To encourage more girls to do sports.
D
Halloween used to be a time for kids. In the past, the festival meant houses decorated with jack-o-lanterns, cool costumes (化装服) handmade by mums, and going door to door asking for candy, saying "trick or treat".
However, you wouldn't have seen any of these if you were at this year's Halloween events in Shibuya, Tokyo, from Oct. 27 to 30. Halloween in Japan has become a big party for adults, who dress up in costumes and hang around having fun taking pictures. In other words, this festival is no longer just a time for kids.
As USA Today editor Bruce Horovitz wrote, "Adults have slowly been stealing Halloween from kids." But "steal" is not quite the word, since the adults of today all used to be kids themselves. These grown-ups still manage to keep the tradition of dressing up alive, however, even if they're too old to knock on strangers' doors for candy now.
Some companies even encourage their employees to wear costumes to work so they can relax and enjoy their share of the festival fun. "You can wear whatever you want and not be judged," Denise Delahorne of DDB Worldwide, an advertising company, told Forbes when asked why adults are so into Halloween compared to other holidays. "There's no pressure (压力) to it. You don't have to travel or deal with relatives. There's no holiday pressure to find a date if you are single."
But here comes the interesting part: As the "adult Halloween" industry gets bigger and bigger, movie theatres, drink sellers and haunted houses are starting to aim (瞄准) at adult customers only. There's even an Halloween trade show in the US every year that you can't even enter if you're under 16.
That isn't good news for kids, but on the bright side, at least young people can still get free candy. And what could be better than that
1. Why are adults so fond of Halloween
A. They would be treated like kids.
B. They don't need to care for their relatives.
C. They feel happy and relaxed during Halloween.
D. They can get free goods from the "adult Halloween" industry.
2. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Work. B. Halloween. C. Being single. D. Another holiday.
3. What did some companies encourage their workers to do during Halloween
A. Wear cool costumes to work.
B. Join the Halloween trade show.
C. Knock on strangers' doors for candy.
D. Decorate their houses with jack-o-lanterns.
4. What's the best title for the text
A. Different Activities to Celebrate Halloween
B. How to Spend Halloween in Japan
C. Halloween Customs and Traditions
D. Adult Halloween Lovers Take Over

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart, I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I woke up with a small hand rubbing my face. "Dad. Merry Christmas!" was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left to them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection(检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and, together with my wife, I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

故填than。

Dear Jessica,
I'm Li Hua. Learning that our school will select 10 students to attend the cultural exchange activity, I'm writing to apply for the opportunity.

Secondly, I have learned shadow plays for eight years and am capable of performing them well. What's more, I'm outgoing and can get on well with others.
I would appreciate it if you could give me this chance.
Yours sincerely,

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my younger son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of his gifts and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly my wife walked up to me. It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I thought she was showing off her efforts on the decoration, but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read "We will never forget you. Merry Christmas!" Under the letter was a watch which was delicate. I was moved to tears.
