As a young girl growing up in the 1930s,I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that.I got a taste of that dream in 2001,when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull.Around that time,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have,I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay,I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr.did it at age 80.Why not me?I was just 84 and in pretty good health.A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009,they announced that I was one of the winners.I just couldn't believe it.Inspired by this,I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.
On June 11,2009,nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor,Jay,guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in,but I wasn't frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet,Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air,the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought,“What have I gotten myself into?”It was scary. But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞),then we just floated downward for about five minutes.Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon.I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life.I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don't stop living just because you are 84 years old.If there's something you want to experience, look into it.If it's something that is possible, make it happen.

For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world's greatest dramatist.Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that of William Shakespeare.Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight,of the works of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare's writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.
Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand.
There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it.Such a study is well worth the effort(it is not,of course, recommended to beginners)even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare's day.

B.Shakespeare's writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.
C.It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origins of the words they use.
D.All the words people use are taken from the writings of Shakespeare.
4.What does the underlined word “proverbs” mean?
A.Familiar sayings. B.Shakespeare's plays.
C.Complaints. D.Actors and actresses.
5.Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English?

B.By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language.
C.English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare's time.

The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also want their children to take extra-curriculum activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet,or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is,the better it is,so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education.Even poor couple buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap.Parents can see that their children's skills vary;they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though,is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life.Cooking demands patience and time.It is an enjoyable but difficult experience.A good cook always tries to improve his cooking,so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result,a well-cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence.
An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child may make him curious and arouse his interest. If he will spend hours looking at it,and try to mend it,your child might become an engineer when he grows up.Such activities do more than teach a child to read a book, but rather they teach them to think, and to use their minds. This is much more important than learning by reading a book.

When I opened my e-mail the other day,a pretty woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking with great enthusiasm.Every now and then she stopped to smile at me or blow a kiss. She was reading me an e-mail from my brother, and a lot of it was about his getting the phone company to give him a high-speed Internet connection. It was pretty cool.
Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail.Facemail lets you send e-mail that can read mails to the receiver by an attractive male or female or by a clown. The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www.Facemail.com.
Facemail faces are lifelike, and they copy emotions based on the ones that you put in your text. For example, type in X,and Rachel blows a kiss.Life FX,the company that develops the Facemail is sure there are broad business uses. The reason that e-business is not popular, the company says,is that buying over the Internet lacks the human touch. But what if you went to the Nike website and Michael Jordan greeted you by name, waited on you and personally closed the sale?Besides, the company is talking with Whirlpool company about the technology in a computer screen on a fridge. Then if Mom can't be at home when the kids get back from school, she can leave a note with voice and image telling them what there is to eat.

Mankind is still evolving(进化),according to a recent study by a team of scientists led by a Yale University evolutionary biologist. But research suggests that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival, perhaps because of differences in women's fertility(能生育性).
The team examined 2,238 women in Framingham,Massachusetts, the US and studied the medical histories of some 14,000 residents since 1948.
They found that strong, slightly fat women tend to have more children. And if this trend were to continue for the next 10 generations,by 2409 the average woman would be 2 cm shorter,1 kg heavier, and have a healthier heart.
That rate of evolution is pretty similar to what we see in plants and animals.Humans_don't_seem_to_be_any_exception,the team said.
Other recent genetic research backs up that belief. One study by John Hawks,an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, found that some 1,800 human gene variations(变异)are common in recent generations because of evolution.Among the changes are mutations(突变)that allow people to digest milk or resist malaria(疟疾)and others that govern brain development.
Since the Industrial Revolution, modern humans have grown taller and stronger. It's easy to assume that evolution is making humans fitter. But according to anthropologist Peter McAllister, the contemporary male has evolved physically into “the sorriest example of male ever on the planet”.An average Neanderthal woman,McAllister notes, could have beat Arnold Schwarzenegger in an armwrestling(腕力)match. And early Australian Aborigines could easily defeat Usain Bolt in a 100-m dash.
However,Douglas Ewbank,of the University of Pennsylvania, says that cultural factors tend to have a much greater impact than natural selection on future generations,so people tend to ignore evolution's effects.
And,despite evidence indicating evolution still works,Steve Jones,an evolutionary biologist at University College London, thinks that the impact of evolution on humans is not the most important.“What makes humans what we are is in our minds,in our society, and not in our evolution,” said Jones.
1.What does the underlined sentence “Humans don't seem to be any exception” imply?
A.Plants and animals are evolving faster than humans.
B.Evolution doesn't work in humans any longer.
C.The rate of evolution in plants and animals also applies to humans.
D.Humans are unique in their evolution.
2.Why is the recent genetic research quoted in the fifth paragraph?
A.To support the belief that mankind is still evolving.
B.To show human gene variations are common in recent generations.
C.To prove modern humans have grown fitter.
D.To suggest that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival.
3.According to the passage,we can infer that Arnold Schwarzenegger ______.
A.used to be a famous actor
B.is an American governor
C.is very weak
D.is very strong
4.According to Douglas Ewbank, which of the following factors plays a greater part in the future generations?
A.Culture. B.Evolution.
C.Natural selection. D.Genetic mutations.

A.Mankind is still evolving.
B.Women will get fatter.
C.The history of human evolution.

Too cold for recess(课间休息)?School policies vary as much as temps.
When is it too cold for schoolchildren to go outside for recess? The answer varies widely based on where a school is located and what the kids are used to.
Consider:One northern Minnesota school says it has to be 15 below zero before kids are kept inside. But in areas along the East Coast, temperatures below 35 to 40 degrees could keep kids inside.Canceling recess because of the cold is no small issue considering that much of the USA is trembling through what may be its coldest winter in a generation, according to AccuWeather.
There is no national temperature standard for when to keep kids inside during the winter months, the US Department of Education says.Decisions are made at the local level, either by principals or school districts.
Consequently, policies are all over the map:
·In International Falls,Minn.,the self-described “Icebox of the Nation,”where the average high temperature in January is 13 degrees,Falls Elementary School Principal Jerry Hilfer says,“if it's 15 below(or warmer),they go out,no matter what.”“At 20 below,it gets iffy, but most probably we will keep them in,”he adds.
·In Wicomico County,Md.,principals typically keep children indoors when temperatures drop below freezing,or if it's raining or snowing, says Susan Jones, the school system's director of elementary education.
·“That's the bottom line,”says Curtis Twilley, principal of Pemberton Elementary School in Salisbury,Md.Twilley says students get little exercise when recess stays indoors. At Pemberton Elementary, the students will typically play board games or computer games in a classroom because the school's gym is occupied with other classes,he says.
·For schools in Marquette,Mich.,which averages about 12 feet of snow per season, school officials acknowledge students are probably a little more prepared than those in some more mild climates.

Kincaid looked at his watch:eight-seventeen.The truck started on the second try,and he backed out, shifted gears, and moved slowly down the alley under hazy sun.Through the streets of Bellingham he went, heading south on Washington 11,running along the coast of Puget Sound for a few miles, then following the highway as it swung east a little before meeting US Route 20.
Turning into the sun,he began the long, winding drive through the Cascades. He liked this country and felt unpressed stopping now and then to make notes about interesting possibilities for future expeditions or to shoot what he called “memory snapshots.”The purpose of these causal photographs was to remind him of places he might want to visit again and approach more seriously. In later afternoon he turned north at Spokane, picking up US Route 2,which would take him halfway across the northern United States to Duluth,Minnesota.
He wished for the thousandth time in his life that he had a dog,a golden retriever, maybe, for travels like this and to keep him company at home. But he was frequently away;overseas much of the time and it would not be fair to the animal.Still,he thought about it anyway. In a few years he would be getting too old for the hard fieldwork.“I must get a dog then.”He said to himself.
Drives like this always put him into a sentimental mood. The dog was part of it.Robert Kincaid was alone as it's possible to be—an only child, parents both dead, distant relatives who had lost track of him and he of them,no close friends.
He thought about Marian. She had left him nine years ago after five years of marriage. He was fifty-two now, that would make her just under forty.Marian had dreams of becoming a musician,a folksinger. She knew all of the Weavers' songs and sang them pretty well in the coffeehouse of Seattle. When he was home in the old days,he drove her to the shows and sat in the audience while she sang.
His long absences—two or three months sometimes—were hard on the marriage. He knew that. She was aware of what he did when they decided to get married, and both of them had a vague(not clear)sense that it could all be handled somehow. It couldn't when he came from photographing a story in Iceland and,she was gone. The note read,“Robert,it didn't work out.I left you the Harmony guitar.Stay in touch.”
He didn't stay in touch.Neither did she.He signed the divorce papers when they arrived a year later and caught a plane for Australia the next day.She had asked for nothing except her freedom.
61.Which route is the right one taken by Kincaid?
A.Bellingham—Washington 11—Puget Sound—US Route 20—US Route 2—Duluth
B.US Route 2—Bellingham—Washington 11—Puget Sound—US Route 20—Duluth

The first time that I had heard the term “EQ” was in the fall of 1995 when the book Emotional Intelligence,by Daniel Goleman, was widely covered by the American press. The widespread research presented in the book supported my own observations and doubts about life and emotions, and told me that I was on the right track to go after happiness. The research continues to confirm what I had concluded on my own:These feelings are extremely important to individual health, happiness, and social harmony. This might seem a bit obvious, but it was not always obvious to me.
I grew up in a family where we didn't talk about feelings. We talked about ideas, concepts and principles. As a result,I could tell you what I thought about everything, but I couldn't tell you how I felt about anything. After several failed relationships,I took time off to reflect on my life and realized I had made many decisions which resulted in unhappiness for myself and others. After studying the literature on emotions and feelings,I concluded that most of my poor decisions could be directly due to what is now called low emotional intelligence,or low EQ,for short.Previously,I struggled to find happiness through the traditional routes—material success. Now,however,I realize that:
There's not much point having either wealth or relationships if you aren't happy.
It is hard to be happy with others if you aren't happy yourself.
It is hard to be happy alone if you don't feel good about yourself,i.e.have high self-esteem and self-confidence.
It is hard to have good feelings about yourself if you don't have good emotional management skills.
Emotional management skills, the main subject of EQ,are, therefore, one of the most basic elements of happiness.
66.The author's views and ideas about life were exactly proved by ______.
A.the widespread reports in American newspapers
B.his own observations and doubts about life and emotions

D.the fact that he was on the right track to go after happiness
67.The author's family members ______.
A.are wise and hard-working
B.are wealthy and strong
C.are not good at expressing their own feelings
D.get along badly with each other
68.Before reading the book, the author thought he could have happiness ______.
A.if he could earn a lot of money B.if he could avoid poor decisions
C.if he took time off to reflect on his life D.if he ignored the traditional routes
69.A person who can't feel happy himself ______.
A.will feel happy with lots of friends B.will not get on well with others
C.has no self-esteem at all D.should read the new book on EQ
70.Loneliness most probably comes from ______.
A.lack of wealth and health
B.lack of the presence of others
C.lack of good relationships with others
D.lack of self-confidence and self-esteem

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
The contemporary environmental movement is often said to have begun with the publication of Silent Spring by the zoologist and biologist Rachel Carson(1907-1964).This landmark work, which took Carson 4 years to complete, diligently detailed the relationship between animal death and the use— now understood as the abuse—of man-made chemicals used as pesticides, especially DDT.One of the claims of the book that she tried to demonstrate was that DDT had the effect of softening the eggshells of birds as well as interfering with their reproduction, and that such effects would lead to their extinction if use of DDT were to continue. It would eventually create a springtime of silence when the songs of birds would not be heard. Her studies also found DDT to be a cause of human cancers.
Born in Springdale,Pennsylvania,Carson graduated from the Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburgh(now Chatham College),where she majored in English until her junior year, when a course in biology inspired her to switch to zoology as her field of concentration. She earned a master's degree in this area from Johns Hopkins University and became a biologist at the Bureau of Fisheries in 1936.During this time, she wrote for various national magazines, and her first book,Under the Sea-Wind,was published.Carson had concerns as early as 1945 about pesticides being used more and more by the government. But her cautionary claims in Silent Spring were met with anger by the pesticide and chemical industries. Her authority as a scientist were challenged, and it was held that her findings were just the roars of a hysterical(歇斯底里的)woman. She was even accused of being a member of the Communist Party. Some go so far as to say that she told a lie.
But she is often celebrated as the founder of the contemporary US environmental movement.Yet her work in Silent Spring, warning about the misuse of pesticides and other chemicals, has not as yet taken firm hold.Americans likely use twice as much the volume of pesticides that they did at the time she published her seminal work, and globally, their use is ever increasing.Powerful pesticides are sold over the counter, and their use is so widespread that many environmentalists are fearful that chemical runoff into streams and rivers is still polluting the animals that humans eat and the water that they drink.
In short, while the main purpose of Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers of the overuse of pesticides and chemicals, nonetheless the public hasn't refused such use.Isn't it time that we firmly said no to pesticides?

Watching online open classes of US top universities has become necessary for many young Chinese who find it a shortcut to make their life more meaningful,in addition to learning knowledge and language.
Guo Lei,a native of Guangzhou, has become addicted to various open courses after she watched the online video of “Justice:What's the right thing to do.”The video clip was taken during an open class taught by Michael Sandel, professor of philosophy at Harvard University.
Sandel set up a situation in which a high-speed train with a technical problem is running towards five people who are working on the current track, while there is only one worker on the adjacent(相邻的)track. He inspired students to discuss what the driver should do—to change the direction for five lives—which apparently will kill the other—or to do nothing and allow five people to die.
Guo said she was immediately attracted by the topic and the discussion of the Harvard students about morality and justice. She even introduced the case to her colleagues for discussion, since Sandel did not give an answer, unlike most Chinese teachers she knew before.
The inspiring and lively teaching style of American professors refreshed Guo's impression about the traditional score-oriented Chinese educational system and prompted more Chinese to frequently search and watch open class resources of American top colleges, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)and University of California Berkeley.
On China's social networking websites, such as renren.com,kaixin001.com and sina.com,netizens have spontaneously formed many study groups to share video resources and exchange opinions.Volunteers have added English or Chinese subtitles onto the videos to help more Chinese enjoy the videos without language difficulties.
“The popularity of American open classes reflects the spirit of sharing,”said Yu Xinke,Vice chancellor with the Continuous Education School of South China University of Technology.

1.B 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.B 6.C 7.A
8.B 9.C 10.B 11.C 12.A 13.A 14.C
15.C 16.London/Britain 17.working 18.English 19.2002 20.jazz
22.D another为“再一次,又一次”,another life为“下辈子”。
27.C would have done表示对过去或已经发生的事情虚拟,意思是“当初本来会或本来已经……”。
Peter is worried that he might lose his job。
29.C but是连词,后面原本应该是一个分句but his suggestion made others happy,但可以省略一些共同的成分,made和主语his suggestion。
it指时间。 It was at about 5 o'clock in ...that they had their supper.what作从句引导词时,须作主语、宾语或表语,但从句中不缺成分;before+时间点是一个很粗略的时间点,只要在他们吃完晚饭之前的任何一点都叫before they had their supper,所以和具体的时间点It was about 5 o'clock冲突。
31.A 根据语境,此处应该表示“具有典型的中国年轻一代的特点”,故答案为A项;B项改为an example of才对;conventional of...
try out for为“参加……的选拔赛,角逐……”;have a go at意思是“尝试”;take part in为“参加”;work out at为“算出数字是……”。
35.B the first/second...to do是固定搭配,表示“第几个做某事的人”。
change “改变”;explain “解释”;learn “学会”;show “展示”。故选A项。
trouble “麻烦”;doubt “怀疑”;wish “愿望”;opportunity “机会”。
通过下文中的“help her pick them up” 可知是书掉落在地上。take sth. out of “把……从……拿出”;drop sth. out of “……从……掉落”;get sth. out of “把……从……取出”;pull sth. out of “把……从……拖出”。故选B项。
39.C 作者继续向前走,但因为忘记了拿书,所以又回来了。come out “出现,出版”;stand by “袖手旁观”;go back “回来”;turn up “出现;露面”。故选C项。
40.C 通过 “packing them up by herself”可知女孩自己捡起了书,所以没有人停下来去帮助她。please “使高兴”;greet “打招呼”;help “帮助”;praise “表扬”。故选C项。
41.A 通过后面的 “so I sat down next to him”可知男人是独自坐在那儿等着图书馆开门。sit “坐”;walk “走”;ride “骑”;run “跑”。故选A项。
discussion “讨论”;lesson “课”;report “报告”;conversation “交谈;会话”。
joke “玩笑”;response “回答”;cry “喊叫;哭泣”;story “故事”。
unchangeable “不能改变的”;unprepared “未经准备的”;unforgettable “难以忘怀的”;unfinished “未完成的”。
desperately “拼命地;绝望地;极度地”;frequently “经常地”;simply “简单地”;widely “广泛地”。故选A项。
allow “允许”;warn “警告”;order “命令”;advise “建议”。
what是about的宾语。
49.that/who who引导定语从句并在从句中作主语。
51.to to one's surprise“令某人吃惊的是”。

56.B 倒数第三段中Susan Jones的唯一引言是“...principals typically keep children indoors when temperatures drop below freezing,or if it's raining or snowing...”,可见B项不对。
57.D 由第五段的“In International Falls,Minn.,the self-described ‘Icebox of the Nation’”可见答案。
59.A 根据第五段最后一句话中的 but most probably和前句的no matter what可知答案。
62.B 从第三段中的“He wished for the thousandth time in his life that he had a dog... But he was frequently away;overseas much of the time and it would not be fair to the animal.”
63.B 从第二段中的“The purpose of these causal photographs was to remind him of places he might want to visit again...”
64.D 从第五段中的“Marian had dreams of becoming a musician,a folksinger.”

One day,Xiao Ming saw a little girl fall over.He wanted to help the girl up,but his mother stopped him and said,“Don't do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down.”Another day,the mother was shocked to see Xiao Ming just let the fallen cooking oil bottle be.And Xiao Ming said to his mother,“If I had straightened the bottle up,you would have thought that I did it.”
I disagree with what the mother did in the story.I think parents should teach their children to do the morally right, not just warn them not to get involved in trouble. They should let their children know it is a pleasure to help others who are in need.Anyway, who wouldn't want a hand when they need one?Their children someday may be in the same situation.
If everyone shows a little kindness,we will all surely benefit. But if you don't care about others' problems, you can be the next one to be left alone when in need.
